What is the P/E Ratio? The Wealth Academy presented by Valentine Ventures

04:39
The Price-to-Earnings ratio (P/E Ratio) is a way to measure value in stocks. The Wealth Academy (http://www.wealthacademy.org) is an ever-growing library of brief, educational videos about investing, personal finance, and the pinnacle of wealth attainment: living a life rich in the things money can't buy. The Wealth Academy traces its roots to a syndicated radio show I produced for many years that ended in 2010 ("The Rich Life with Bill Valentine"). The show was based on the idea that rather than "stock tips", investors needed to better understand the fundamentals of investing, what types of information they could trust and not trust, and just how much outdated information there is out there. The Wealth Academy picks up where the radio show left off. The videos are produced at my investment firm, Valentine Ventures, by me and my team. We do not ask anything from you in order to watch these videos, except perhaps your feedback—if we can do new video for you, or do the ones we do better. If you want to be kept apprised of the videos being added to the Academy (along with our other informative content), be sure and sign up for our "Weekly Update" via the above link. Is Dividend Yield Investing Thru ETFs Worth It

03:53
I recently received a great question from a client regarding the advisability of investing in high-dividend yielding ETFs. With these types of ETFs being made up of stocks from the utility and financial sectors, I find that the performance of the sectors determines more of the return than the yield itself. For more market insight, go to http://www.valentineventures.com The concept of high-dividend yielding ETFs and stocks is nice, but TOTAL RETURN is where an investor derives their result.

The Opposite of Down Is Not Up - The Market Message presented by Valentine Ventures, LLC

03:22
Two weeks ago, Bill Valentine explained that just because the Market was hitting a new high, it didn't portend an imminent decline. In other words, just because the Market's "up" doesn't mean it will have to be "down" soon. When the Market's not hitting new highs, it can be setting back a bit, or moving sideways before getting back to new highs or "ups." The opposite is true when it comes to Volatility. The Market is seeing low levels of volatility that it hasn't seen in years. For some, that implies that a spike in Volatility is right around the next corner. Maybe. But maybe not. There have been long, multi-year stretches where low Volatility led to...low volatility. Just because Volatility is "down," doesn't mean it has to be "up" soon. Stocks and Bonds in Tough Economy: Managing Capital Gains Tax

05:13
Stocks belong in a taxable account (because they get capital gain treatment) and bonds belong in an IRA (because they get taxed at current income rates)? Investors love stocks and bonds and generally own a mix of the two, as they should. The accepted best practice for storing the two types of investments is to put all of your stocks into a taxable account because they get capital gains treatment and to put bonds in an IRA to shelter them from higher tax rates, but Bill Valentine offers a different solution. Speaking to the merits of an IRA, Dan Caplinger says "Many taxpayers get a current deduction, and filing procrastinators can even allocate their contributions to the previous tax year and save on taxes even faster." http://www.fool.com/retirement/iras/2011/07/15/these-7-smart-picks-belong-in-your-ira.aspx David Marino points out that the potential for earnings on certain stocks are increased by tax incentives where "investors get a cash dividend from the stock, and also enjoy the upside of capital gains from the growth of the stock." http://sandiegometro.com/2011/07/david-marino/ For more tips and insight visit us at http://www.valentineventures.com or subscribe to our YouTube channel. Stock Market Update: Shifting from BULLISH to NEUTRAL

03:49
The US stock market, as the preeminent global growth market, and a proxy for all risk assets, has shown signs of the potential for a prolonged and material deterioration, owing to indications that US economic growth is faltering. On Project Syndicate, Kenneth Rogoff, Professor of Economics and Public Policy at Harvard University, observes that "the real problem is that the global economy is badly overleveraged, and there is no quick escape without a scheme to transfer wealth from creditors to debtors, either through defaults, financial repression, or inflation. A more accurate, if less reassuring, term for the ongoing crisis is the 'Second Great Contraction.'" http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/rogoff83/English From a technical standpoint, the US stock market has created a "head and shoulder pattern", broken through major support at the 1254 level for the S&P 500, and perforated the 200- and 250-day moving averages. While we don't place much faith in technicals, we do recognize that their affect on others behavior, when multiple indicators converge, warrants attention. From a behavioral standpoint, the various surveys of Confidence/Sentiment combined with the recent action of options traders, suggests that more downside remains possible. Todd Harrison of Minyanville says, "The question is whether the negativity has become too pervasive (right at the bottom of the 2011 trading range) or if social mood has officially turned -- and we know that social mood and risk appetites shape financial markets." http://www.minyanville.com/businessmarkets/articles/bull-market-backstop-todd-harrison-technical/8/3/2011/id/36106 Accordingly, we reduced our Growth portfolio Beta by removing a single, UltraLong Exchange Traded Fund. This is indicative of a switch in macro view from BULLISH to NEUTRAL. More times than not, a market like today's will actually recover. Were that to be that case, we'd revert to BULLISH and up the Beta. But the possibility exists for further downside, so we will watch for indications of when it's time to go BEARISH and further reduce Beta. Subscribe to the Valentine Ventures YouTube channel and we'll keep you informed.

Investors Believe In Black Magic - Confessions of a Money Manager

Would you turn to a witch doctor or shaman if you had a serious medical condition? No rational person would in this day and age. And yet these same rational folks believe in the black magic of market predictions and stock picking from talking heads on Wall Street. It defies rationality. There has never been a single instance of a person with an ability to predict the markets or the direction of a stock to the degree that there next pick has a better than random chance of being more right than the behavior of the markets as a whole. In this video, Bill tells you what really goes on in the investment world, and encourages you to acquire the wisdom that will result in a halt to the feeding of the beast in the form of excess management fees. Porter Stansberry is the world's biggest shark (preying on you and your fears of economic collapse)

06:16
Porter Stansberry needs to be called out for preying on your fears of economic collapse to sell his investment newsletter. If you don't know who Porter Stansberry is, read Brian Deer's resource page for a Sunday Times of London investigation of California-based VaxGen Inc., which led to dealings with Frank Porter Stansberry, a tip sheet operator who lured the unwary with claims of proof that AidsVax works and predictions that the stock would soar, just before it collapsed. Soon after, the US Securities and Exchange Commission went after Stansberry, accusing him of operating an investment scam. http://briandeer.com/vaxgen/stansberry-fraud.htm Bill Valentine doesn't shirk from the duty of calling out the world's biggest shark, either. The Market Message - It's All Greek To Me

03:16
Greek stocks are down 85% from their peak. Declines like these lead to intermediate-term opportunities for the bold investor. There's a newly created Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) called the Global X FTSE Greece 20 ETF (ticker: GREK) that captures that market on a single-country basis. But before diving in, consider the appropriateness for your situation, and all the disclaimers in this video. An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is an investment fund traded on stock exchanges, much like stocks. An ETF holds assets such as stocks, commodities, or bonds, and trades close to its net asset value over the course of the trading day. Most ETFs track an index, such as the S&P 500 or MSCI EAFE. ETFs may be attractive as investments because of their low costs, tax efficiency, and stock-like features. ETFs are the most popular type of exchange-traded product. Hyperinflation or high inflation? Protect your assets and know the difference

03:45
Hyperinflation or high inflation? What is the difference? Bill Valentine, CIO and founder of Valentine Ventures, shares his insight on the difference between hyperinflation and high inflation. Investors are always concerned about high inflation as an economic risk. Bill says if we were faced with a hyperinflation scenario, the only way to protect yourself would be to move all of your assets out of dollar denominated ones into hard assets, or switching into an entirely different currency, such as euros or yen. Hyperinflation is not 10, or 20, or even 30% inflation. None of those come close to rising to the working definition of hyperinflation. http://seekingalpha.com/article/277453-bank-reserve-levels-won-t-cause-hyperinflation The Rogue Economist of the Seeking Alpha financial website says, "Hyperinflation only ever happens when there is a general loss of faith in a currency, which results in mass flights out of it. Bank reserves have nothing to do with this phenomenon." Noted economist Philip D. Cagan wrote a treatise about hyperinflation in 1956 where he defined hyperinflation as inflation of 50% or more per month. The United States has never experienced hyperinflation but did experience high inflation of 20% during world war one and high inflation of 15% during the 1970's. But for true hyperinflation to take place in the United States, the American dollar would have to become worthless. Bill cites examples of other countries which experienced hyperinflation, such as Hungary, Yugoslavia, the Weimar Republic of Germany and Zimbabwe. http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2011-07-20/news/29795001_1_inflation-rate-indian-exports-high-inflation The Economist features a current example of the impact that high inflation can have on a country's economy. Bill Valentine, who writes the Hog Blog, shares more about what you need to know about inflation: http://www.valentineventures.com/blog/2011/07/everything-you-need-to-know-about-inflation-in-ten-charts/

What Is A Financial Plan? The Wealth Academy presented by Valentine Ventures

04:28
Financial plans are the cornerstone to a successful financial life. Does The Low VIX Mean A Disaster Is Pending? - The Market Message with Bill Valentine, CFA

06:09
The CBOE Volatility Index ("VIX") usually moves inversely with the stock market, and exponentially so. As such, it's become a favorite indicator for market speculators. Lately, the VIX has been hitting multi-year lows, leading some to believe that a reversal must be imminent. Were that to be the case, the implication is a falling stock market. But we must remember that the VIX is not an instrument in and of itself and thus its recent-past behavior doesn't "drive" it's soon-to-be-behavior. But more to the point, a low level of VIX doesn't necessarily portend a high-VIX. VIX can go a loooooong time at low levels. How long? You'll have to watch the video to see for yourself. Bill Valentine, CFA is the President and Portfolio Manager at Valentine Ventures, LLC, a wealth management firm located in Bend, Oregon. A financial educator, Bill informs and entertains his followers via The Weekly Update, an email newsletter.
