Nuclear Reactor - Understanding how it works | Physics Elearnin video Nuclear reactors are the modern day devices extensively used for power generation as the traditional fossil fuels, like coal, are at the breach of extinction. A nuclear reactor is the source of intense heat which is in turn used for generation of power in nuclear power station. Its mechanism is similar to that of a furnace in a steam generator; the steam is used to drive the turbines of the electric generator system. A nuclear reactor consists of three crucial components: Fuel elements, moderator and control rods. Fuel elements come usually in the shape of thin rods of about 1cm in diameter and contain fissionable nuclei, like Uranium (235 92U or 238 92U). These rods vary in number according to the size of the reactor, in large power reactor thousands of fuel elements are placed close to each other. This region where these fuel elements are placed is called the reactor core. These fuel elements are normally immersed in water which acts as a moderator. The objective of a moderator is to slow down the energy neutrons in a nuclear reactor which are produced during the nuclear fission process by the fuel elements. Thermal neutrons, which are neutrons with energy of about 0.04 electron volts, are capable of producing fission reaction with 235 92U. During the fission reaction process, new neutrons are given out which have energies of about 1 MeV. These neutrons of typically escape from participating in another fission process as they are accompanied by enormous energy release. In f -ct, the probability of these neutrons produce another fission reaction is 500 times less than as compared to that of a thermal neutron. This is where moderator is extremely useful. Moderator has the capability to slow down, or in other words moderate, the speed of these high-energy neutrons, so that they can in turn be used for a chain reaction to trigger multiple fission reactions of other 235 92U nucleus. Commonly, ordinary or heavy water is used as moderator in nuclear reactors because of the deuterons present in them which are capable of slowing the neutron speed. Water molecules in the moderator are useful in slowing down the high-energy neutrons which leave the fuel-element after nuclear fission. These high-energy neutrons collide with water molecules thereby losing out on some energy with every collision and therefore slow down substantially. A new fission reaction can now be triggered using this slow neutron by striking it with the fuel element. The third and of the most prominent part of a nuclear reactor are the control rods. In order to get a steady output of energy from the nuclear reactor, every single nuclear fission reaction should trigger another fission reaction and ensure the availability of a spare neutron released to trigger the chain reaction. By controlling the number of spare neutrons available at any given time, the rate of the nuclear fission chain reaction can be controlled. This control on the fission reaction can be maintained using the control rods. The main function of the control rods is to absorb any excess or spare neutron in the moderator in order to prevent any further fission reaction. Usually such control rods are made of Boron or Cadmium. To increase the rate of fission reactions, these rods can be removed from the moderator. A steady output of energy can be thus maintained by inserting or removing the control rods in the nuclear reactor. Now that we know the components of a nuclear reactor, let us understand the working of a nuclear reactor. It is usually enclosed in a shield made of thick concrete walls. It consists of a reactor core, pump and heat exchanger. The reactor core and pump are in placed in contact with the water, which is usually the heat exchanger used in reactors. Due to the enormous amount of heat released dusing nuclear fission reaction, this surrounding water gets heated up and changes to steam, which is in turn used to turn the turbines. Thus huge heat energy gets converted into electrical energy. Water is continuously flown in and out of the nuclear reactor using the pump. Thus a nuclear reactor successfully generates nuclear energy from fission reaction.

On April 26, 2016, Ukraine marked the sad 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the city of Pripyat, then located in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union (USSR). An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster Moscow tried to hide the disaster for 2 days before finally admitting the accident. Evacuation began long before the accident was publicly known throughout the Union. Only on 28 April, after radiation levels set off alarms at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden, over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from the Chernobyl Plant, did the Soviet Union publicly admit that an accident had occurred. At 21:02 that evening a 20-second announcement was read in the TV news program Vremya: There has been an accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. One of the nuclear reactors was damaged. The effects of the accident are being remedied. Assistance has been provided for any affected people. An investigative commission has been set up. — Vremya, 28 April 1986 (21:00) This was the entirety of the announcement of the accident. The nearby city of Pripyat was not immediately evacuated. The townspeople went about their usual business, completely oblivious to what had just happened. By 11:00 on 27 April, buses had arrived in Pripyat to start the evacuation. Thirty-one deaths are directly attributed to the accident, all among the reactor staff and emergency workers. An UNSCEAR report places the total confirmed deaths from radiation at 64 as of 2008. The Chernobyl Forum predicts the eventual death toll could reach 4,000 among those exposed to the highest levels of radiation (200,000 emergency workers, 116,000 evacuees and 270,000 residents of the most contaminated areas). Both scientific and community-based, the Symposium is organized around the following themes: health, environment, economy, ethics, governance, human rights and the rights of indigenous peoples. Open to the public, the symposium had hosted more than 300 people per day from 14 to 16 April 2015, and had included local, national and international representatives from the sectors of health, research, industry, education, civil society, policy makers and indigenous communities. local, national and/or international media were present. While uranium has been primarily mined from Saskatchewan, the provinces of British Columbia and Nova Scotia have officially banned uranium mining. Quebec recently shut down its sole nuclear reactor and has tasked the Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE) with conducting an investigation on issues related to uranium mining. It is expected to release its report by May 20 2015. Where in the world would you have to go to find Uranium? The best place to look is in a silver mine. Speaking of silver, there's 40 times more uranium than silver. Uranium in mines are in the form of Uraninite (ores). It looks pitch black because it's been oxidized. But what does it looks like when the oxidized layer is taken out? It looks like silver. That is, it's shiny and metallic. Aside form mines, uranium can be found in your back yard, or in sea water. It's just in really small amounts. So small in fact that it's not worth the effort to extract it. All the uranium on earth was formed during the death of a star, it is theorized that most of earth's heat comes from radioactive decay, but it's actually mainly residual heat from earth's creation 4 billion years ago. A larger factor for the core's sustained heat is from friction caused by sinking rocks. The top three countries that hold uranium are Kazakstan, Canada, and Australia. So now that you've found uranium, how do you make and enrich those uranium rods? The primitive way is to crush the ore, add some acid, and then burn the product. The  more efficient way is turn uranium into gas and spin it through centrifuges.

Colloque de l'Orme du 15 mars 2012 par Daniel HEUER (Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie, CNRS, Grenoble) L'énergie nucléaire actuelle repose sur la fission de l'uranium-235, un isotope qui représente 0,72% de l'uranium naturel. Au XXIe siècle, les ressources en uranium naturel permettront le développement de la filière actuelle. A plus longue échéance, la production de noyaux fissiles dans le coeur du réacteur, appelée régénération, s'imposera pour la production d'énergie nucléaire. Deux options sont alors envisageables : le cycle uranium-plutonium et le cycle thorium-uranium. Les réacteurs surgénérateurs pour le cycle uranium-plutonium ont été très largement étudiés et ce cycle est déjà partiellement utilisé avec les combustibles MOx. Il n'en est pas de même pour le cycle thorium-uranium, qui présente des avantages théoriques : la possibilité de surgénération en spectre thermique, la moindre production d'actinides mineurs et un caractère non proliférant. Nous ferons le point sur la réalité de ces avantages et sur les différents types de réacteurs qui pourraient utiliser ce cycle alternatif. Nous présenterons ensuite les réacteurs à sels fondus particulièrement adaptés au thorium, qui, lui-même, exprime tout son potentiel dans ces réacteurs.

It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts. Notes about measuring radiation: Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation. Amidst the last major climate change summit, there was one power source that was notable, more by its absence than anything else: nuclear power. Nuclear power doesn't get much attention but you'd be surprised at just how many African countries are have, are thinking about, or are planning to acquire nuclear power plants. As of November 2016, 8 African states are in the planning stages in their respective nuclear power programs. It's a diverse collection, including Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal in the West, the EAC states in the East, and Zambia and Namibia, in the South.

In Europe nuclear energy is more and more often celebrated as saving the climate. Clearly, nuclear power plants need uranium.

The aim is to comprehensively illustrate the opportunities and risks posed by nuclear energy, whilst paying particular attention to uranium mining.

Australia has the world's largest deposits of this resource. We will travel to the "land down under" to exemplify where uranium comes from, where it goes to and what is leftover from it.

There is plutonium (used mostly together with uranium) and thorium. And by now there is just one thorium nuclear reactor in India. (what concerns nuclear fusion, deuterium and tritium could be use, but this is just hypothetical).

By now the most used combustible for the nuclear energy production is uranium and the world has many problems and risks because of this. This film is about uranium and its use for the nuclear energy production. It doesn't want to be comprehensive of everything concerning nuclear reactors. And it is a very good film, based on a accurate inquiry about uranium.

Cook The "Renaissance" in Nuclear Physics: Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions and Transmutations ICCF-21 Oral Presentation June 4, 2018 File name: cook 6 4 FORT COLLINS, CO - The 21st International Conference on Condensed Matter Nuclear Science (ICCF-21) was held at the Lory Student Center on the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins, CO from June 3-8, 2018. Nearly 150 scientists from over a dozen countries presented over 100 papers and posters on Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR). Additionally, for the first time two dozen students and science teachers attended the conference via a new scholarship program created to engage the next generation of capable scientists with fresh energy, ideas, and an interest in LENR. LENR experiments over the past 30 years have shown that it is possible to release large amounts of nuclear energy using small chemical reactions. The production of nuclear energy with LENR is groundbreaking because these reactions occur without dangerous radiation and do not produce radioactive waste. While the empirical data for the occurrence and properties of LENR are well documented, the mechanisms that cause LENR are not yet understood. This is a major scientific puzzle that the annual ICCF-21 conference continued efforts to address. Over a dozen companies have been founded in several countries in the hopes of commercializing LENR as a new source of clean, practical energy. ICCF-21 provided these companies and scientists alike the opportunity to discuss LENR scientific research and advancements. Attendees included those interested in the business potential of LENR as a future source of reliable energy. Critical Mass How Nazi Germany Surrendered Enriched Uranium for the United States Atomic Bomb Dr. Delmar Bergen, retired director of the Nuclear Weapons Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where the world’s first atom bombs were designed, has gone on record stating the Manhattan Project, counter to what has been believed for the past 70 years, did not alone create the first nuclear weapons dropped on Japan to end World War Two. United States forces received enriched uranium surrendered from Nazi Germany to help make the bombs, according to Dr. Bergen. “It is my view as a physicist…, that the effort the Germans put into preparing and shipping the 560 kilograms of uranium oxide surrendered on board the German submarine U-234, shows it was enriched in the isotope U235. In other words, it was enriched to create a nuclear weapon,” said Bergen. “This runs counter to the traditional history of these events but I am confident in my conclusion…. My belief is that the German scientists associated with this cache believed the amount of U235 carried by U-234 was sufficient to create a nuclear bomb.” The assertion comes on the heels of an historical conflict broiling in Germany where, in July 2011, 126,000 barrels of spent uranium from the Nazi atomic bomb program was reported to have been discovered (see: Daily Mail Online 13 July, 2011). “Our association sank radioactive wastes from the last war, uranium waste, from the preparation of the German atom bomb,” reports a 1967 document from Germany’s ASSE II nuclear waste dump. The 126,000-barrel total would be well over 300,000 tons, a massive volume of uranium waste. Historians have contested the claim of the document on Nazi spent uranium based on the assertion the Nazis never successfully enriched uranium. Their evidence has been the total lack of any spent uranium stores that would certainly exist if uranium had been enriched; and the argument the Germans never had a uranium enrichment production plant to begin with. The find of over 300,000 tons hidden in “crumbling” mines outside Hamburg, if true, eliminates one leg of their argument. Anthony N. Stranges, a history of science professor at Texas A&M University, is a proponent for considering the new evidence and adjusting the history as appropriate when evidence proves valid. Stranges says researcher Carter Hydrick has been waiting 15 years for the uranium waste to be found. A decade-and-a-half ago Hydrick, in his book Critical Mass: How Nazi Germany Surrendered Enriched Uranium for the United States’ Atomic Bomb, predicted the store of uranium existed. His confidence was based not only on his assessment, with the help of Dr. Bergen and other physicists, of the evidence relating to the uranium surrendered on U-234 but on facts he discovered about an alleged “synthetic rubber plant” at Auschwitz that devoured more electricity than the city of Berlin but never produced any synthetic rubber. “The electrical consumption (at the Auschwitz plant)… was preposterously high for making buna,” the synthetic rubber in question, according to Dr. Bergen. “The power expenditure was in line, however, with uranium enrichment requirements of an atomic weapon, based on my personal knowledge of its U.S. counterpart,” Bergen said. The discovery of a Nazi uranium enrichment plant would eliminate the remaining argument against the Germans having a well-developed atomic bomb program, and add verification to Dr. Bergen’s conclusion the surrendered uranium was enriched.
