Upgrading the Particle Physics Toolkit: The Future Circular Collider - Harry Cliff, John Womersley
When the LHC reaches the limits of its discovery potential in 2035, what happens next? John Womersley and Harry Cliff discuss the next mega-collider - the future circular collider. Subscribe for regular science videos: http://bit.ly/RiSubscRibe The 'Future Circular Collider' (FCC) is a plan for a 100km ring-shaped particle accelerator buried underground near Geneva, which would dwarf the Large Hadron Collider in power, reaching collision energies of up to 100 TeV. This formidable machine would allow physicists to seek answers to some of the deepest questions about our universe including the nature of dark matter, the imbalance between matter and antimatter in the universe, and whether a deeper theory lies beneath the current Standard Model of particle physics. Watch the Q&A: https://youtu.be/ea9G1PHpNNY Dr Harry Cliff is a particle physicist based at the University of Cambridge who works on the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Harry’s research is focused on searching for signs of new particles and forces beyond the Standard Model of particle physics by studying the decays of particles known as bottom quarks. For the past seven years he has held a joint fellowship with the Science Museum, where he curated exhibitions on physics and astronomy including a major exhibition about the Large Hadron Collider. Professor John Womersley is one of the world’s foremost particle physicists and has taken leading roles on projects both in Europe and the United States. John worked at Fermilab near Chicago before becoming a scientific advisor to the Department of Energy in the US. He returned to the UK in 2005 to become Director of the Particle Physics Department at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory at a time when it was building and delivering vital components to CERN's Large Hadron Collider. In time John took on a broader role as Director of the Science Programmes Office and was then appointed Chief Executive of the Science and Technology Facilities Council in 2011. He is now the Director General of Europe’s next major science project, the European Spallation Source. These talks and Q&A were recorded and live streamed in the Ri on 7 March 2019. Lenses, Folds, and Traversals
Slides: http://comonad.com/haskell/Lenses-Folds-and-Traversals-NYC.pdf This was a talk I gave at the second New York Haskell User Group Meeting (http://www.meetup.com/NY-Haskell/) on the new lens library, which provides a highly composable toolbox for accessing and modifying multiple parts of data structures. Starting with building blocks such as fmap and (.), we build up combinators suitable for working with a wide array of data structures. These generalize the notions you already know how to use into a form that is easier to compose and simultaneously allow them to be used for monomorphic containers such as Data.Text. All without compromising on your ability to reason about them using laws! Finally, once I've built up some foundations, I do a bit of a deep dive, exploring consequences of this design. In particular we discuss the efficient generic programming programming framework exported by lens, and type-safe Traversal-based zippers. Familiarity with the Applicative and Traversable classes from the Haskell base libraries will be helpful (links provided below), but a basic understanding of the concepts get introduced as I go along. Useful (but not mandatory) references: The lens library and documentation: http://hackage.haskell.org/package/lens A previous, more introductory talk on how to use the lenses Edward Kmett wrote for the scalaz in the Scala programming language: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efv0SQNde5Q The original Applicative paper: http://www.soi.city.ac.uk/~ross/papers/Applicative.pdf Lots of information on Traversable: http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/jeremy.gibbons/publications/iterator.pdf A write-up of this talk, as presented at the Bay Area Haskell Users Group: http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2012/10/lenses-folds-and-traversals-haskell.html The original Keynote version of the slides are available from http://comonad.com/haskell/Lenses-Folds-and-Traversals-NYC.key Thanks go to Johan Kiviniemi, who worked magic when it came to cleaning up the audio for this recording!

Siberian giant sinkholes: Russian expedition ventures to solve the mystery
It's been a year since giant craters were spotted in the Russian north, capturing the minds of scientists around the world. They popped up out of nowhere in the Yamal Peninsula, where temperatures can plunge dozens of degrees below zero in winter. The largest of the holes was found to be more than 60 meters deep. Their origin gave birth to many wild theories. Paul Vigna & Michael. Casey: "The Age of Cryptocurrency" | Talks at Google
A cyber-phenomenon that became a buzzword virtually overnight, Bitcoin constantly makes headlines, fueling endless media debate over its viability. And though today it can be used to buy almost anything, few understand the controversial currency and most think it will never be mainstream. So should we even care about Bitcoin? In THE AGE OF CRYPTOCURRENCY: How Bitcoin and Digital Money are Challenging the Global Economic Order (January 27), leading WSJ financial writers Paul Vigna and Michael J. Casey argue Bitcoin represents a monumental paradigm shift that will transform the social, political and economic landscape. Since its advent, Bitcoin has gained a reputation for instability and illicit business; naysayers fear its power to eliminate jobs and upend the concept of a nation-state. Vigna and Casey show that cryptocurrencies can also bring good. For one, they remove the middleman from the financial system, giving the power to the people and safeguarding from the devastation of a 2008-type crash. They also promote financial equality; Bitcoin has already given the world's unbanked—those marginalized billions who’ve never had a bank account—unprecedented access to the global economy. Regardless of its long-term effects, Vigna and Casey prove we can’t ignore Bitcoin; for better or worse, it’s here to stay. A critical, accessible look at a global phenomenon, THE AGE OF CRYPTOCURRENCY demystifies virtual currency and explains its origins, its functions, its potential value and how to navigate the new global cyber-economy. The book published to great reviews, including in The Economist and Fortune. Harvard historian Niall Ferguson raved that “you need to read The Age of Cryptocurrency today” and leading VC Marc Andreessen likewise called it a “must-read.” ABOUT THE AUTHORS PAUL VIGNA is a markets reporter for The Wall Street Journal, covering equities and the economy. He is a columnist and anchor for MoneyBeat. Previously a writer and editor of the MarketTalk column in DowJones Newswires, he has been a guest on the Fox Business Network, CNN, the BBC, and the John Batchelor radio show. He has been interviewed by Bitcoin magazine and appeared on the Bitcoins & Gravy podcast, and boasts a collective 20 years of journalism experience. MICHAEL J. CASEY writes for The Wall Street Journal, covering global finance in his "Horizons" column. He is a frequent contributor to the Journal's MoneyBeat blog and co-authors the daily "BitBeat" with Paul Vigna. He is the host of the book-themed video series "WSJ Afterword" and a frequent guest on and host of "The News Hub" and "MoneyBeat." His podcast on world economic affairs is forthcoming. Casey has written for such publications as Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, and The Financial Times. He is the author of two books: Che's Afterlife: The Legacy of an Image (Vintage, 2009), one of Michiko Kakutani's "best books of 2009," and The Unfair Trade: How Our Broken Financial System Destroys the Middle Class (Crown, 2012). Symposium on Blockchain for Robotic Systems
Robotic systems are revolutionizing applications from transportation to health care. However, many of the characteristics that make robots ideal for future applications—such as autonomy, self-learning, and knowledge sharing—also raise concerns about the evolution of the technology. Blockchain, an emerging technology that originated in the digital currency field, shows great potential to make robotic operations more secure, autonomous, flexible, and even profitable, thereby bridging the gap between purely scientific domains and real-world applications. This symposium seeks to move beyond the classical view of robotic systems to advance our understanding about the possibilities and limitations of combining state-of-the art robotic systems with blockchain technology. Reclaim The Records: Lecture at the 2017 IAJGS conference in Orlando
Tired of being told by state and local archives and government agencies that your family's genealogical records are "unavailable" to the public, or only available if you visit them onsite? We were too, so we figured out how to do something about it. We're Reclaim The Records, a new activist group that filed a first-of-its-kind Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) legal petition in the Supreme Court of New York against the NYC Municipal Archives, for access to twentieth century genealogical records...and won! We also secured the first-ever public release of the indices to hundreds of thousands of vital records from the New Jersey State Archives. And we're filing many more requests against city and state agencies, large and small. This presentation will tell the story behind these cases, walk through the legal basics of FOIL, and teach genealogists how to file their own FOIL requests for their own records. Ethereum is one of the leading cryptocurrencies, competing for investors' interest. What is Ethereum Ethereum was created by Russian programmer Vitalik Buterin in 2014 after he was involved for years in the Bitcoin community and for a while headed the Bitcoin magazine. Ethereum is an open-source, fully decentralised blockchain supporting a cryptocurrency of the same name. The Ethereum network is mostly known for supporting smart contracts. In the case of the Ethereum network, a smart contract may mean any program that needs computation and uses the network's resources. To avoid abusing resources, every computation is paid for with Ether, or "gas". The most important implication of smart contracts is that third parties can create new tokens, or cryptocurrencies, that run on the Ethereum network. The crypto coin Ethereum itself is a stake in the work of this network, and it is an exchange-traded asset in the cryptocurrencies market, just like Bitcoin, Litecoin and Dash. Ethereum shopping online is possible, though there are limited offers, and Ether is mostly meant to be the fuel for calculations on the Ethereum blockchain. So how does this translate into value? Due to an agreement between the Ethereum Foundation and the Bitcoin community, Ether has been connected to Bitcoin since the beginning, ensuring transactions of value. Ethereum is perhaps the most complicated cryptocurrency because smart contracts are not easy to grasp. For a beginner, it is best to think of Ethereum as a tradable asset that can be exchanged for other cryptocurrencies or for cash. 🙏Thank you so much for spending your time to watch this video and please don't forget to LIKE & SUBSCRIBE.
