It is difficult for traditional wheelchairs to operate throughout the rough terrain of Alberta’s hiking trails. This excludes a large group from hiking, a past-time many Albertans take for granted. The Parks Explorer, an important piece of the Alberta Parks Inclusion Plan, is a project that will open up Alberta’s world-class hiking trails to those with lower-body disabilities. The recumbent tricycle design provides greater stability and control, allowing users to comfortably ascend provincial trails. The drive, braking, tilting, and steering systems are incorporated into the handle bars, allowing the trike to be operated without lower-body movement. Key to the design was creating a user experience that was easy to learn, comfortable to use, and universal for all levels of athleticism and disability. Ultimately, the Parks Explorer is a vehicle of inclusion, enjoyment, and empowerment.

My client is a fashion designer who provides clothing for celebrities and has hired me to answer these questions. This year for the academy awards they would like to only dress those who have a high likelihood of wining an Oscar given the film was ranked top 10 by viewers. Their goal is for their designs to live long after the red carpet, in the photos and video clips that follow for years to come when the award is mentioned. More than a few years ago, Maria Oden spied a poster at a teaching conference about the concept of engineering design kitchens – and chuckled to herself. The Rice professor knew better than anyone that there were no such facilities before the original: Rice University's Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen. "Already, people at universities were thinking about this kind of education and they'd put the stamp, the design kitchen, on it," she said. "We were at the front edge of what has become a movement." Oden doubted the poster's creator knew the "kitchen" part comes from the building's past as the literal kitchen for the Rice campus, before separate serveries fed the colleges. This week, the OEDK formally celebrates 10 years of world-changing student innovations, and it will do so in grand style with a party in the adjacent north parking lot on Feb. 22 from 5 to 10 p.m. Oden, director of the OEDK and a full teaching professor of bioengineering, has overseen three expansions of the program that eventually took over the building's entire footprint, with a fourth ambitious expansion in the works. Her guidance has been key to the development of a place where students -- most from engineering but also from every school on campus -- come together to innovate. As of this year, more than 1,000 teams have toiled in the OEDK on senior engineering capstone and other projects. Some have indeed made an impact on the world through their designs for the Rice 360˚ Institute for Global Health.

An autonomous mine detector made for the ENGG1100 project in semester 1, 2013 at UQ. Built by team Pruple. Controlled using an Arduino Uno, the craft uses a 3-axis magnetometer to detect mines, and an IR sensor to know when it has gotten close to the edge of the field. It is a model of vertical densification of nature within the city that operates in relation to policies for reforestation and naturalization of large urban and metropolitan borders. The first example of the Vertical Forest consisting of two residential towers of 110 and 76 m height, was realized in the centre of Milan, on the edge of the Isola neighborhood, hosting 800 trees (each measuring 3, 6 or 9 meters), 4,500 shrubs and 15,000 plants from a wide range of shrubs and floral plants distributed according to the sun exposure of the facade. On flat land, each Vertical Forest equals, in amount of trees, an area of 20,000 square meters of forest. In terms of urban densification it is the equivalent of an area of a single family dwelling of nearly 75,000 sq.m. The vegetal system of the Vertical Forest contributes to the construction of a microclimate, produces humidity, absorbs CO2 and dust particles and produces oxygen. http://goldstocktrades.com Rainbow Resources (RBW.V) is about to commence drilling on the High Grade Silver, Near Surface International Project. Rainbow acquired three high grade, past producers in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia that was never previously drilled. Recently the company released airborne geophysical data that shows a much larger zone of silver mineralization at their International Property. The company has a high grade shallow target which will be the focus for drillers this weekend. This project has been around for a long time as high grade silver was found on it in the early 1900's. Now with the price of silver about to break out investors are looking for early stage, emerging high grade discoveries located in mining friendly jurisdictions. The International Property has shown extremely rich silver samples of 30+ ounces per ton and up to 70% lead. British Columbia has a well established mining industry and are supportive of exploration and mine development. In addition to the International Property, the company has picked up the Jewel Ridge Project which is adjacent to Barrick's Ruby Hill Project. Ruby Hill is an open-pit, heap leach operation. In 2011, Ruby Hill produced 127,000 ounces of gold at total cash costs of $334 per ounce1. The company believes that there is gold on the property directly to the south and plans to go down in the fall after work is completed in British Columbia. In addition to gold and silver exploration, Rainbow Resources picked up concessions surrounding Eagle Graphite, which may be the only producing graphite mine in Western North America. The company has some interesting samples, which they should be following up soon. The company has an experienced board with strong shareholders. The share structure is impressive with approximately 35 million shares outstanding, with insiders owning approximately 22%. Not only has Mr. Decker who is a Rainbow director and the companies qualified person under NI 43-101 been an experienced trainer in mine supervision for such companies as Alamos Gold, Barrick, Breakwater, BHP, Cameco, Capstone Mining, Cleveland Cliffs, Farallon Mining, Fording, Kinross, Newmont, North American Palladium, Placer Dome, Prodeco, Suncor, Teck, Western Coal and Xstrata but some of you may have known him as President of Grande Cache Coal. Grande Cache was acquired by China's Winsway Coking Coal Holdings Ltd. and Japan's Marubeni Corp. for $1 billion.

Electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. (TSLA) is down more than 8% early, after Capstone Investments reportedly lowered its rating for the stock late last week, cutting TSLA to "sell" with a $22 price target. Among the bearish observations Capstone offers is that a mere 1,400 vehicles have sold since 2008. Capstone also contends demand for electric vehicles may not materialize as fast as some investors hope.

Research Excellence New Mexico Tech has jokingly been called a research institution that happens to have a university. In reality, it’s not far from the truth. However, the vast majority of research projects have a strong student component. Nearly all professors in every academic department maintain active research projects that involve undergraduate students. Also, more than 400 graduate students are conducting research – along with their academic advisors and committees – to finish their master’s and doctorate degrees. New Mexico Tech recognizes the importance of research projects to prepare all students for their career. Therefore, all researchers, even those who are not tenure-tracked faculty members, are strongly encouraged to hire students and give them active roles in projects. In all the engineering departments, seniors finish their undergraduate careers with a “capstone” project. In Senior Design Clinic, students often work with off-campus sponsors who present a challenging project to Tech students. These sponsors often become active partners, mentoring and advising seniors. Senior Design truly gives students a taste of what they will experience once they enter the workforce. Some of the partners include General Electric, Yates Petroleum, NASA, the national laboratories and numerous other high-tech companies – both in New Mexico and beyond. Research Divisions New Mexico Tech has more than a dozen research divisions that work with private industry, government agencies and other universities. These divisions employ undergraduate students, offer research opportunities for graduate students and contribute ground-breaking research to the scientific canon and the world of industry, science and engineering. The research divisions include: Petroleum Research and Recovery Center The PRRC works with funding from numerous state and federal government agencies on projects that maximize and revolutionize oil and gas exploration and production. Students from petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, materials engineering, math and management conduct research through the PRRC. Institute for Complex Additive Systems Analysis (ICASA) ICASA is a computer security and forensics division that develops and implements software and hardware to combat cyberterrorism and computer-based crimes. Computer science students find ample opportunities to work and research at ICASA Energetic Materials Research Testing Center (EMRTC) New Mexico Tech’s largest research division, EMRTC conducts numerous research projects involving explosives. EMRTC also hosts terrorism-response training classes for first responders from around the nation and the world. With more than 200 employees, EMRTC has ample work and research opportunities for students in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering and other fields. IRIS-PASSCAL In addition to maintaining the world’s largest lending library of seismology equipment, the IRIS-PASSCAL group conducts seismology and Earth science research on every continent. Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO) This facility includes a 2.4 meter optical telescope and will soon be home to a world-class interferometer. Along with partner University of Cambridge, New Mexico Tech is developing and designing a 10-unit optical interferometer set to see “first light” in 2010. Students in physics – both graduates and undergraduates – will have the opportunity to use this phenomenal facility to conduct astronomical research. National Center for Genome Resources (NCGR) Based in Santa Fe, the NGCR has cutting-edge DNA sequencer machines that are periodically available for use by biology students conducting genetic research. National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) Based in Carlsbad, the NCKRI is a fledgling organization that sponsors student research in biology and Earth sciences. The Institute is a strong resource for students interested in the study of geology and hydrology. Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research The nation’s first lab devoted to lightning research, Langmuir hosts researchers from around nation every year. Physics students have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research projects in a variety of atmospheric studies.
