Cryptosporidium lives in the intestine of infected humans and animals. It is a microscopic parasite that may be found in soil, food, water, or surfaces that have been contaminated with the feces from an infected host. Cryptosporidiosis is the name of the diarrheal disease caused by Cryptosporidium. Both the disease and the parasite are commonly referred to as "Crypto." An infected person or animal sheds the parasites in their stool. In fact, millions of the parasites can be released in a bowel movement from an infected human or animal. The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods of time and makes it very resistant to chlorine-based disinfectants. Crypto can be spread: • By putting something in your mouth or accidentally swallowing something that has come into contact with waste infected with Crypto. • By swallowing recreational water contaminated with Crypto. • By swallowing contaminated water or beverages. • By eating uncooked food contaminated with Crypto. • By touching your mouth with contaminated hands. People in buildings that have suffered from a sanitary sewer overflow or due to a flooding event should be aware of this parasite. Child care workers who change diapers and healthcare workers are also at risk. The most common symptom of cryptosporidiosis is watery diarrhea. Other symptoms include: • Stomach cramps or pain • Dehydration • Nausea • Vomiting • Fever • Weight loss Some people with Crypto will have no symptoms at all. While the small intestine is the site most commonly affected, Crypto infections could possibly affect other areas of the digestive tract or the respiratory tract. These are just a few things to know about Cryptosporidium, to learn more about this or other environmental, health and safety, occupational or indoor environmental issues, please visit the websites shown on the video.

A deadly diarrhoea and vomiting bug has been found in tap water in the surrounding area of Bristol, causing primary schools to close.People living in Clevedon with a postcode of BS21 or BS49 have been told to boil their drinking water until further notice after the parasite Cryptosporidium, which causes watery diarrhoea, vomiting, fever and dehydration, was found in local samples.Bristol Water, who issued the notice at around 5.45pm on Thursday, has staff going door-to-door supplying bottled water to 'vulnerable customers', such as the elderly and children, living in the local area.Clevedon School and Mary Elton Primary School are closed today for 'health and safety reasons'.The tap water warning is not expected to be lifted until Sunday January 14 at the earliest.Cryptosporidium can be life-threatening in people with weak immune systems such as those undergoing chemotherapy or organ transplants.Cryptosporidium is a parasite that spreads via water. The most common symptom is watery diarrhoea, which generally appears around seven days after infection. Other symptoms are abdominal pain, dehydration, nausea, vomiting, fever and weight loss. These usually last between one and two weeks. People with weakened immune systems are most at risk of serious illness or even death due to infection. Most healthy people recover without treatment. Drinking plenty of fluids can help manage diarrhoea. Cryptosporidium infection can be prevented by washing hands thoroughly after using the toilet or preparing food.Dean Hudd, headteacher at Mary Elton Primary School, said: 'The two schools, Mary Elton and Clevedon, that have been affected by the contaminated water have made the decision to close on Friday January 12.'This decision has been based on Health and Safety reasons. We envisage that the school will be safe and reopen on Monday January 15.'The Clevedon treatment works has been suspended and water is being supplied by other sources.Compensation will be paid to those affected.Bristol Water advises tap water should not be used for drinking, cooking (unless boiled), bathing, cleaning teeth, feeding pets, cleaning dishes, washing clothes or heating baby food.Thara Raj, a consultant in health protection for Public Health England South West said: 'We would remind people in the affected areas to follow the advice from Bristol Water and boil their drinking water and allow to cool before use.'The levels of Cryptosporidium detected in the water supply is low and the advice to boil the water is as a precaution.'If people feel unwell or experience symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting they should contact NHS 111. If your symptoms become severe, you should contact your GP.' ATLANTA — The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says outbreaks of a parasitic infection linked to swimming pools are increasing, with twice as many outbreaks recorded in 2016 as in 2014. Cryptosporidium, commonly known as Crypto, is a microscopic parasite that causes diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis. Even in properly chlorinated water, the parasite can survive up to 10 days. Swallowing just a mouthful of water with Crypto can make healthy people sick for weeks. It can cause stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea and can lead to dehydration. The only way to get rid of the parasite is by treating the water with extremely high levels of chlorine that are dangerous for swimmers. “To help protect your family and friends from Crypto and other diarrhea-causing germs, do not swim or let your kids swim if sick with diarrhea,” said Michele Hlavsa, R.N., M.P.H., chief of CDC’s Healthy Swimming Program said in a press release. “Protect yourself from getting sick by not swallowing the water in which you swim.” Ohio was one of the states with the most reported cases. A total of 1,940 people fell ill due to the infection in 2016. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Endoscopic Animation on parasites Parasites can get into the intestine by going through the mouth from uncooked or unwashed food, contaminated water or hands, or by skin contact with larva infected soil, they can also be transferred by the sexual act of anilingus in some cases. When the organisms are swallowed, they move into the intestine, where they can reproduce and cause symptoms. Children are particularly susceptible if they are not thoroughly cleaned after coming into contact with infected soil that is present in environments that they may frequently visit such as sandboxes and school playgrounds. People in developing countries are also at particular risk due to drinking water from sources that may be contaminated with parasites that colonize the gastrointestinal tract. The two main types of intestinal parasites are helminths and protozoa. Helminths are worms with many cells. Tapeworms, pinworms, and roundworms are among the most common helminths in the United States. In their adult form, helminths cannot multiply in the human body. Protozoa have only one cell, and can multiply inside the human body, which can allow serious infections to develop. Intestinal parasites are usually transmitted when someone comes in contact with infected feces (for example, through contaminated soil, food, or water). In the U.S., the most common protozoa are giardia and cryptosporidium. Signs and Symptoms: Parasites can live within the intestines for years without causing any symptoms. When they do, symptoms include the following: Abdominal pain Diarrhea Nausea or vomiting Gas or bloating Dysentery (loose stools containing blood and mucus) Rash or itching around the rectum or vulva Stomach pain or tenderness Feeling tired Weight loss Passing a worm in your stool Symptoms of Intestinal Parasites Intestinal parasites can cause one or more of the following symptoms: Mild diarrhea with waxing and waning course, appearing few days to several weeks after the travel into the country with poor hygiene, and lasting from several days to months (for comparison: bacterial diarrhea usually has a sudden and dramatic onset within some hours after a meal, and heals on its own in few days). Mucus in the bowel movement Bloating and flatulence Weight loss is common. Pale skin, tiredness, tingling (due to reduced absorption of minerals and vitamins). Entamoeba histolytica may cause severe colitis with ulcers, abdominal cramps, blood in the stool with occasional pus -- the disease is known as amebic dysentery Entamoeba may invade liver, lung, brain, or other organs, where it forms cysts. Worms, their parts or eggs can be sometimes found in the stool. Read more about intestinal worms. Infection by either one-cell organisms or intestinal worms is often present without any symptoms. Diagnosis of Intestinal Parasites Diagnosis can be often suspected from history of prolonged bloating or diarrhea and can be confirmed by the following tests: Ova and parasites (O&P) test of the stool. The test is often false negative so three stools from three different days (at least two days apart) should be tested. Hemoccult test may reveal blood in the stool Blood tests often reveal elevated eosinophils and IgE antibodies and lowered ferritin, hemoglobin or red cells CT or biopsy are needed to find cysts in the liver, lungs or brain. Be careful when you go for a swim in the neighborhood pool this summer. The parasitic infection Cryptosporidium - known as Crypto - is on the rise in the US. The parasite is the most common cause of diarrhea linked to swimming pools and water parks, and it spreads when people swallow something that has come into contact with the feces of a sick person (such as pool water). The infection can make "healthy people sick for up to three weeks with watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or vomiting, and can lead to dehydration." List of some common and not so common signs and symptoms of blastocystis hominis. Download Blastocystis Hominis Report and Shopping list here: http://www.yeastinfection.org/blastocystis-hominis/ Greetings. It's New Zealand naturopath, Eric Bakker, author of Candida Crusher and formulator of the Canxida range of supplements. This is a Blastocystis hominis series of videos that we're doing today. Have you clicked on the link yet? Please click on the link on your screen right now to download my free report. And don't forget to do my quiz on yeastinfectin.org. I don't want to give myself too much of a plug, but my range of Canxida supplements are fantastic for people with Blastocystis hominis and parasite infection in general. When I created the Canxida Remove, I wanted to create the most effective and powerful broad-spectrum anti-parasite/antifungal/anti-bacterial product in the world. That's what I wanted to do. I just wanted to create something outstanding. Something that really works time and again for all of my patients. You can find that product at Canxida.com. Check that out and that's going to help you a lot. We're going to talk right now about the unusual signs and symptoms of a Blastocystis hominis infection. Because it's not all about the gut. Remember the gut influences many different aspects of your health. We, in fact, call the gut the "second brain." I haven't completed some videos yet on the vagus nerve and the autonomic dysfunction. I'm not going to confuse you too much with that now. But suffice it to say, the gut has a big influence on the brain and on many aspects of our well-being. When the digestive system is upset with blasto, you can get signs and symptoms throughout the body. Common ones I've seen – because I see a lot of people – or I should say, less common, you may not experience these, but some people will really relate to these. You may have a digestive problem, but you also may have very itchy skin. You may have joint pain. You may have a finger joint that occasionally hurts. You could have brain fog. You could get all sorts of sharp shooting pains throughout the body. You can get all sorts of muscle twitches. You could get Urticaria. Even hay fever and various kinds of hypersensitivity responses are linked to having blasto. Now, you're thinking, "Hang on a minute. This sounds like a lot of bologna. How can that be?" When blasto affects the body, it affects the immune system. When the immune system is affected, the immune system can create all sorts of chemicals that have peripheral effects all over the body, in the brain, in the central nervous system, in the peripheral nervous system, in the skin, many organs can be affected, so the whole body can be affected when the gut's been affected. Particularly when the digestive system has been affected for a number of years, you can get a lot of strange peripheral symptoms. And you go to the doctor and that'll be seen as a separate disease, so then you'll get more drugs for those diseases that the doctor has got no clue about. Ask yourself this question, this is very important and I want you to pay attention. The symptoms that you've got that are unusual; did they come after digestive system symptoms? Did you a long time ago develop gut complaints and then over a period of months or years develop other symptoms on top of that? Those are the sort of things I look for when I have a patient who's been chronically unwell for years. Because chronic disease is a progression. It's a development. A ladder develops over a period of time, so we get symptoms here, symptoms here, symptoms here, and they just progress. Unfortunately, the medical profession sees all these symptoms as completely unrelated and each symptom gets its own drug, which to me is just crazy. Because chronic disease has an origin. And if we really carefully peel back the layers, look at the beginning, and treat that, we can often clear up all of these other symptoms that came. Isn't that common sense? To me, it's just common sense. But for the medical profession, it means all these additional drugs are given to you, which create additional side effects. Remember, blasto can create gut problems, but it can also create a lot of peripheral problems as well. Have a think about that. Thanks for tuning in. Is it bad for you to stay in swimming pool water for too long? Imagine being stuck in a public pool, unable to get out of the water. “Eh, no biggie,” you say? Well, you might have a change of heart after watching this video! You might have noticed how, after a good long bath, some of your old skin peels away. If that happens after just an hour or so, what will come of being in the water for a much longer time? After a day or two in the water, your skin will start to form vesicles that will erupt eventually, and your epidermis will literally start to peel away. Definitely doesn’t sound like a good place to be in, right? And believe it or not, it gets worse! It’s just your skin adapting to the underwater conditions, giving you a better grip on wet objects. - The chemical itself has a rather weak smell. However, when it comes into contact with bodily fluids like sweat, oils, or urine, they create a reaction that causes the infamous “chlorine” stink. - One of the less threatening but equally unpleasant effects of chlorine on your body is what it does to your hair. The longer you stay trapped in this pool, the more likely you’ll have to invest in a good wig. - There are at least two types of parasites that are highly resistant to chlorine, making it almost useless to disinfect the water with this chemical. These parasites are Cryptosporidium (a.k.a. “Crypto”) and Giardia. - Prolonged immersion in water supersaturates the skin and can lead to skin breakdown. It means that, after a day or two in the water, your skin will start to form vesicles. - Your poor pink flesh will be exposed to all that nasty dangerous stuff with no means to defend itself! - After some more time, the pressure of the water will start affecting your whole body. So, to add insult to injury, not only will you contract different diseases due to your lack of dermal protection, you’ll also experience muscle cramps in your legs and have difficulty breathing. - The outer layer of your skin will completely come off, making you vulnerable to all dangers imaginable, so you’ll almost certainly catch several infections that cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. They pass into the environment through their faeces as cysts or oocysts. Protozoan cysts and oocysts are bigger than bacteria or viruses. https://www.gov.mb.ca/waterstewardship/odw/public-info/fact_sheets/pdf/factsheet_protozoa.pdf Cryptosporidium is a genus of apicomplexan parasitic alveolates that can cause a respiratory and gastrointestinal illness (cryptosporidiosis) that primarily involves watery diarrhea (intestinal cryptosporidiosis) with or without a persistent cough (respiratory cryptosporidiosis) in both immunocompetent... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptosporidium

Diarrhea is a condition in which there is :- Unusual frequency of bowel movements (more than 3 times a day).- Changes in the amount ( more than 200g a day).- Change in consistency( liquid stool). It is a common cause of death in developing countries and the second most common cause of infant deaths worldwide.WHO defines :Having 3 or more loose or liquid stools per day, or as having 3 or more loose stool. Acute diarrhea is an attack of loose motion with sudden onset which usually lasts 3 to 7days but may last up to 10 – 14 days. It is caused by an infection of the large intestine, but may be associated with infection of gastric mucosa and small intestine. The term “acute gastroenteritis” is most frequently used to describe acute diarrhea. Chronic diarrhea is termed when the loose motion is occurring for 3 weeks or more. It is usually related to underlying organic diseases with or without malabsorption. Diarrhea with watery stools and visible blood in the stools is called dysentery. Persistent diarrhea refers to the episodes of acute diarrhea that last for 2 weeks or more and may be due to infective origin. The main causes of this disease are lack of knowledge of hygiene and sanitation, home environment, feeding practices of the parents and under five years of children. It can be caused by chronic ethanol ingestion. Chronic mild diarrhea in infants and toddlers may occur with no obvious cause and with no other ill effects ,this condition is called toddler’s diarrhea. About 1/3 of total hospitalized children are due to diarrheal diseases and 17%of all deaths in indoor pediatric patients are related to this condition. The morbidity rate in terms of diarrhea episodes per year per child under the age of 5 years is about 1.7. Diarrhea is mostly infectious. A large numbers of organism are responsible for acute diarrhea. The infectious agent causing diarrhea with enteric infection include the followings:- Viruses: Rota virus, adenovirus, enterovirus, norwalk group viruses, measles virus etc. Bacteria: Campylobacter jejuni,E.coli,Shigella,Salmonella, cholera vibrio, vibrio parahemolyticus etc.- Parasites: E.histolytica, G.lambia, Cryptosporidium,H.nana , malaria etc.- Fungi: Candida albicans Rehydration Therapy:The management of diarrhea is a vast majority of children is best done with ORS solution and continued feeding.ORT means drinking of solution of clean water, sugar and mineral salt to replace the water and salt lost from the body during diarrhoea, especially when accompanied by vomitting,i.e gastroenteritis.

Learn how to treat Blastocystis Hominis infection once and for all. Comprehensive video on blastocystis hominis treatment. Download Blastocystis Hominis Report and Shopping list here: http://www.yeastinfection.org/blastocystis-hominis/ Many people who read my Candida Crusher book or who've read online about yeast infections, they may, in fact, have a blasto infection. They may have a Dientamoeba fragilis infection, Entamoeba histolytica; there are many different kinds of parasites out there. And a lot of these parasites have one thing in common, well, a couple of things in common. They need feeding. They produce waste. They get attacked by the immune system, creating chemicals that affect the body peripherally. They compete with each other. They have these wars going on internally. A little bit like the Catholics, Muslims and all these religious people that have fights all the time. It's a little bit like what happens internally with us. We have these inner wars going on. I want you to try to understand that you shouldn't really try to compartmentalize diseases too much and give everything separate treatments. If you have a look at the work I've written on yeast infections, if you follow that quite carefully, you're going to have a fantastic outcome for blasto as well. The blasto treatment, as I mentioned, is not unlike Candida treatment. You need to really take the sugars, the refined starches, and the junky foods out of the diet. I can't help you if you maintain alcohol consumption, even if you drink one glass of beer a week or even a month. So if you're drinking alcohol, you've got a gut problem, and you don't want to stop, hit the kill switch right now on this video because I don't want to help you. I'm not interested in helping you. If you're sincere and you want to overcome this problem, you will stop drinking alcohol for at least three to six months while we work on your gut. That's number one for natural treatment. You cannot drink alcohol in any shape or form until your gut comes right. You must stop for a considerable period of time all sorts of sweet foods, confectionary, ice cream, most breads need to go because they're too refined for the gut. Those starches are great fodder for lots of different kinds of bad bugs as well as parasites in the body. So you need to get rid of these kinds of foods from your diet. A whole foods diet is the best. You will have heard of the SCD, the specific carbohydrate diet. Donna Gates' work on Body Ecology. There are so many different books out there now that you can draw parallels from. They're all very healthy, clean dietary approaches. You can pick any one of these. They're all going to work to a reasonable extent with eradicating blasto as well as Candida. It's all about discipline, folks, it's all about eating the right kind of foods, avoiding the crap that you know to avoid, exercising regularly, getting plenty of rest and sleep. Again, I don't know how many times I've told you, there's no rocket science behind this. It's common sense. I tend to grow a lot of my own vegetables and fruits. A lot of the green foods I eat come straight out of the garden, and I think it's a really nice thing if you can grow some of your own foods. You'd be more motivated to eat healthy if you do that. Blasto doesn't like lots of vegetables, for example. Especially, things like broccoli and spinach. Those are good foods. Beans, celery, kale, steamed kale is a really good food. There are many foods you can eat that discourage blasto infection, and there are many foods you can eat that encourage it. So the stronger your gut symptoms, the more careful you've got to be with your diet. But I don't want you making changes too quick. I want you making changes more slowly. I've had too many patients contact me getting into really big problems when they did a very strong about turn with their diet within a week. They stopped eating all the junk food and they started trying to eat everything perfect, and they did that all within a week, and then ended up feeling like crap. So you can't do that. You need to have a slow transition from junk into a healthy way of living. Because remember, you've got to change the environment of the gut, and that can take a few weeks or a few months for you to achieve that. It's not going to happen overnight. Learn what is blastocystis hominis, what are the causes, symptoms and how to get rid of it from you body. Download Blastocystis Hominis Report and Shopping list here: http://www.yeastinfection.org/blastocystis-hominis/ Greetings. It's New Zealand naturopath, Eric Bakker, author of Candida Crusher and formulator of the Canxida range of dietary supplements. Thanks for checking out my video today. Today, I'm going to teach you about Blastocystis hominis, a parasite that tends to affect quite a lot of people that I see. People that consult with me through Skype or Face Time, they often talk about digestive problems. And a lot of this will entail blasto, which we're going to talk about in this series on Blastocystis hominis. Before you check out the video, please click on the link on this video right now, so you can download my free report. And also, don't forget to subscribe because I really enjoy making these videos and, particularly, if I've got a lot of subscribers, I enjoy it even more. Let's get into it. What is Blastocystis hominis? It's a weird name. It sounds almost like some kind of space creature. Many people are confused and I often get asked what blasto is, so I've got a question here from a guy called Robert Conlon in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Robert, I'm going to tell you a bit about blasto. What it is. How it affects you. What the causes are. What the signs and symptoms are. But we're going to make these videos in chunks. We're not going to just do one huge big video on blasto. Blasto is basically a parasite that really affects people quite bad in some cases. It can really affect you seriously, your intestinal tract, and create a lot of different signs and symptoms. It's passed from a human being or from an animal to a host. All sorts of animals can get affected by blasto. Rats, chickens, mice, cows, dogs, cats, domesticated animals, wild animals. It's a small parasite with an ultrahard shell. In fact, it can live for long periods of time outside the intestinal tract, so it can be picked up through soil or water or transferred from animal fecal matter to a human quite easily on different surfaces. It can be picked up through diaper changing. It can be picked up through utensil sharing. Water is the common contamination source of blasto. Blasto is very common throughout the United States. It's in Europe. It's in most developed nations now. And in the last 20 years, it's become a serious problem in a lot of countries. It's amazing how many stool tests I've performed on patients and seen that they have a Blastocystis hominis infection. I really want you to check out this video series on blasto and try to get your head around it because it could be affecting you right now. You could be going to a doctor complaining of digestive system problems, and the doctor may not even test for blasto. This is a really important video series to highlight in terms of personal hygiene. Why you need to wash your hands and be careful when you go traveling in different countries. The type of water that you drink. The type of food you eat. Personal hygiene is a very big thing. Another route you can pick it up from is swimming in municipal swimming pools or drinking water from wells in certain countries where there's not a lot of hygiene or sanitation. Just be very careful when you go traveling because water is probably the easiest source for you to pick up Blastocystis. As I mentioned, it can live for long periods of time outside of the digestive tract. It mainly affects the large intestine. And we'll soon see in another video all the signs and symptoms of a blasto infection. It's easily transmitted from human to human or from animal to human, and personal hygiene is certainly one way that you can really prevent this thing from happening. I've seen many men, women, and a lot of children with blasto infections. And in some cases, the infection lasts for one or two months. In some cases, it can last for 10 years. I've had patients in many countries around the world with blasto infections. And I'm going to show you in this video series how to nail this infection, how you can get rid of it. Not only how to get rid of it, but how you can prevent getting it in the future. Please stay tuned to this series on Blastocystis hominis. Did I say subscribe? Please subscribe to my channel. I'll catch you in the next video. Thanks for tuning in. 1. Feces According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the average swimmer contributes at least 0.14 grams of fecal matter to pool water — usually within the first 15 minutes of entering. And, a CDC report of routine pool inspections released in 2010 found that nearly one in eight pools posed serious violations that threatened public health, which resulted in those pools being closed immediately. 2. Bacteria - E. Coli The CDC released a new study about what's lurking in the pool water. And it doesn't look so good. Water sampled from 161 pools in the Atlanta area showed signs of E. Coli — the bacteria most commonly associated with fecal matter. And it can't completely be pinned on the kids. While it's true that improperly potty-trained children can bring fecal matter into the water, adults share the blame. When you forgo rinsing with soap and water before entering the pool, you introduce fecal matter into the water. A simple shower with soap before entering the water can significantly cut the risk of contamination. And for the little ones, be sure to change diapers in the bathroom or designated diaper-changing area — not poolside, which increases the risk of germs getting into the water. 3. RWIs Recreational water illnesses (RWIs) are caused by germs that are spread by swallowing contaminated water present in swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, lakes, and oceans. According to the CDC, there has been an increase in the number of RWI outbreaks in the past two decades. The most common RWI is diarrhea. Other RWI infections include: gastrointestinal skin ear respiratory eye neurologic wound most common is diarrhea (caused by germs like Crypto and E. coli) Chlorine and other disinfectants don't kill germs instantly. Also, the mixing of chlorine with pee and sweat uses up the chlorine in the pool, which would otherwise kill germs. That's why keeping chlorine at recommended levels is essential to maintain a healthy pool. 4. Cryptosporidium ("Crypto") Cryptosporidium — or Crypto, for short — is a parasite that causes the diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis. Protected by an outer shell that allows the parasite to survive for up to 10 days even in chlorine-treated water, this means that even well-maintained pools can spread Crypto among swimmers. Crypto has become the leading cause of swimming pool-related outbreaks of diarrheal illness. From 2004 to 2008, according to the CDC, reported Crypto cases increased by over 200 percent. Fortunately, by following good hygiene at water parks and public pools, you can help prevent Crypto. 5. Giardia Giardia is a microscopic parasite that causes diarrhea. The parasite is found on surfaces or in contaminated soil, food, or water. Like Crypto, Giardia is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods of time, and which also makes it tolerant of chlorine. A person can get infected by swallowing Giardia cysts (hard shells containing Giardia) found in contaminated food or water. Cysts are immediately infectious once they leave the host through feces. While the parasite can be spread in different ways, water (drinking water and recreational water) is the most common method of transmission. It can be passed from person to person, or from animal to person. If you swallow contaminated water, such as in a public swimming pool, you are at risk for getting a Giardia infection, and Giardia infection rates tend to rise in the summer months. 6. Pee in the Pool One in five Americans admit to peeing in the pool, according to a survey conducted by the Water Quality and Health Council. But the faux pas goes beyond the average, recreational pool-goer. Nearly 100 percent of elite competitive swimmers are reported to pee in the pool — regularly. Disgusting, yes. And also unhealthy. Urine interferes with the chemically-treated pool water and essentially eats up the chlorine, which is intended to kill harmful germs. If too many people pee in the pool or dive in while sweaty, that could mean less available chlorine to wipe out germs. 7. Chlorine By-product When we enter the water, we add our sweat, urine, invisible fecal matter, lotion, and sunscreen to the soupy, invisible brew of chemicals and bacteria present in the pool water. Enter chlorine, which is intended to kill bacteria and germs in the water. But if you notice a strong odor of chlorine at a public pool, it's actually not a good thing. It indicates a maintenance problem. A well-chlorinated pool should in fact have little odor. What are the proper free chlorine levels? Pools: free chlorine level (1-3 mg/L or parts per million [ppm]) and pH (7.2-7.8) maximize germ-killing power Hot tubs/spas: disinfectant level (chlorine [2-4 parts per million or ppm] or bromine [4-6 ppm] and pH [7.2-7.8]) maximize germ-killing power
