Inside Juvenile Detention
As recently as 2005, the state of Virginia had eight centers like Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility, housing more than 1,300 delinquent youth. But by 2017, after a series of reforms, that number had shrunk to one. “It's not that you can't do good work here,” said Andy Block, who, since 2014, has served as the juvenile-justice department’s director. “But the place itself and the design and the size and the location are barriers to doing good work.” Block and others are working to close Bon Air and replace it with something that reflects the juvenile justice reforms that have taken hold in Virginia and across the country—a system that once focused on confinement is now dedicated to rehabilitation. In recent years, more than 70 percent of Virginia's juvenile inmates were rearrested within three years of their release.* Read more on The Atlantic: https://www.theatlantic.com/projects/juvenile-justice/ *This documentary originally stated that Virginia has one of the highest recidivism rates in the country. This characterization was based on incomplete data. The documentary also stated that the three-year rearrest rate for current Bon Air inmates would be 74 percent. This was the rate for former juvenile inmates in Virginia in 2014. We regret the errors.

Analytics on Large Scale, Unstructured, Dynamic Data using Lambda Architecture
Lambda architecture, at its core, is a set of architecture principles that allows both batch and real-time or stream data processing to work together while building immutability, recomputation and human fault tolerance into the system. It has three layers - batch, serving and speed: The batch layer is responsible for computing arbitrary views on the master data. Our master data is an immutable store in HDFS and we compute views using a series of Map Reduce jobs using Scalding and Spark. Our batch system runs recomputation every day on our entire data set. The serving layer indexes and exposes precomputed views to be queried ad-hoc with low latency. We use HBase, Solr and our own inhouse inmemory implementation for the serving layer. The speed layer deals only with new data and compensates for the high latency updates of the serving layer by creating realtime views. Our real time latency requirements are in few hours and not in seconds, which allows us to use a micro-batch architecture that is a stripped down version of our batch layer and uses the same technologies. To get the final result, the batch and realtime views must be queried and the results merged together. In this talk, the speaker explains the following: Why Lambda Architecture? What problems did it solve for us? Technical Challenges encountered in building the lambda architecture Schema Evolution HDFS Small Files Issue Code re-use between batch and real time systems Modeling the data pipelines for each layer Open problems

Stockpile Monitoring Service using Drones
Using Drones, ORCA Geo Services offers fast, safe and accurate stockpile inspection services for coal, minerals, biomass, fertilizers as well as piled commodities. This state-of-the-art technology offers several key advantages: - Volume calculation with improved accuracy over traditional inspection methods - Faster turnaround time for complete stockpile volume assessment - Online monitoring and reporting service with detailed photographic overview of your facility Digital images captured by our Drones offer a bird’s eye perspective 50 meters above ground level. The provided maps can be also used for better stockyard management. Using advanced image processing techniques, a 3D model of the stockpiles is created, providing volume measurements with a degree of accuracy previously not achievable. Our expert surveyors draw samples from the stockpiles and send them for laboratory analysis to determine the density of the materials. The tonnage of each stockpile is finally determined by multiplying the volumes calculated by the Drone with the densities analyzed by the laboratory. Atmosphere 2014: When Storm hits data. Data streams processing in real time - Marcin Stanisławski
Performing analysis and prediction in big scale (aka Big Data) is very popular in IT world now. But how to deal with this amount of data in real time? How to get answers on questions asked by business runners in seconds rather than in hours? How to forget about MapReduce jobs and still deal with BigData? In this talk I will try to answer these questions and introduce you to real time "recipies" and algoritms. Talk covers also basics of Apache Storm Project which is my preferred tool for doing such type of analysis. Presentation also contains facts and lessons learned from designing and developing real time topologies at INTERIA.PL.

Demystifying Data Science 2017 | Panel Q&A with Metis Bootcamp Alumni
For individuals seeking to transition their career into data science, a bootcamp can be a smart decision, providing a structured learning environment at a fraction of the cost of obtaining an advanced degree. The first Metis bootcamp ran in Fall, 2014. Since that time, Metis has graduated hundreds of students, who are now in data-science related jobs across a wide range of industries and companies, including Facebook, Apple, IBM, Booz Allen, Tesla, and Capital One Labs. Megan Ayraud, former Head of Careers for Metis, moderates this five-person Metis alumni panel to see, their answers to why they chose to attend a bootcamp, what background training they had, how well prepared were they for their data science jobs, what was the post-bootcamp interview process like, and many other questions. The panelists include: Jessica Cox, Technology Researcher, Elsevier Labs (NYC, Summer 2016) Andre Gatorano, Principal Data Scientist, Capital One (NYC, Fall 2015) Michael Lai, Data Scientist, Philadelphia 76ers (NYC, Winter 2016) Naoya Kanai, Data Scientist, AirBnB (SF, Summer 2016) Lorena De La Parra Landa, Data Scientist, CKM Advisors (NYC, Winter 2017)

Lead contamination ignored by mainstream media in 100s of cities
Dangerous levels of lead seeped into Flint's drinking water after a new supply was not properly decontaminated with up to 12,000 having suffered from severe lead poisoning. Despite the crisis, locals are still forced to pay for their poisoned water supply. But the nations’ water woes don’t end with Flint, as hundreds of cities are at risk for drinking water contamination. RT’s Caleb Maupin reports. Investors still reluctant to buy USD (15.02.2018)
The inflation report from the US was not able to arouse interest of dollar bulls. The US dollar made a brief bounce following stronger-than-expected CPI data. Today, the US dollar index again sank below 89.00. Experts say the greenback rallied for a while for a sheer speculative reason. Bulls are in no hurry to open long positions on the US dollar as they do not see a solid footing for steady growth of consumer prices in the US. Meanwhile, the US stock market closed yesterday’s trade in the green. Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed to 24,893 points. Nasdaq Composite gained almost 1.90% and S&P 500 rose to 2,698. Now back to the forex market. The US dollar opened the Asian trade on a weak note. The dollar/yen pair is now trading near 106.45. Japan released a report on industrial production for December with better-than-expected readings. Besides, Australia presented data on the labor market. The Australian economy added 16,000 new jobs last month, beating forecasts for a 13,500 increase. The jobless rate came in at 5.5% in January, the same as in the previous month. The upbeat data gave impetus to the Australian dollar against its American rival. The AUD/USD pair is trading next to 0.7960. Today, investors await a manufacturing index from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and the US producer price index. Thus, currency strategists say the US dollar could grab a chance to recover losses. https://www.instaforex.com FX Analytics - https://www.instaforex.com/forex_analytics Forex Calendar - https://www.instaforex.com/forex_calendar Forex TV from InstaForex - https://www.instaforex.com/instaforex_tv Forex charts - https://www.instaforex.com/charts Instant account opening - https://www.instaforex.com/fast_open_live_account Forex Trading Contests - https://www.instaforex.com/forex_contests List of official InstaForex blogs: https://www.facebook.com/instaforex https://www.instagram.com/instaforex/ https://twitter.com/InstaForex https://telegram.me/instaforex

Appalachian Waterways Need Defending- Appalachian Water Watch
To Donate: http://AppVoices.org/waterdefense To Learn More: http://AppVoices.org/kylitigation On March 9, 2011, we announced another 60 day intent to sue Nally & Hamilton Coal Company for more than 12,000 violations of the Clean Water Act at more than a dozen of its operations in 7 eastern Kentucky counties. The notice letters provide evidence indicating that Nally and Hamilton has filed false and potentially fraudulent, water pollution monitoring data with state agencies over the past three years. Nally & Hamilton submitted reports in which all effluent data reported for a certain outfall in a certain month repeat exactly the data reported for the same outfall in other months. In other words, the company seems to have cut-and-pasted previous sets of data in later reports rather than monitoring the discharge and submitting accurate data for each month. The company also repeatedly omitted legally-required data from its reports. If fined, the maximum allowed under the Clean Water Act could amount to potential penalties of more than $400 million. Our legal team consists of the plaintiffs Appalachian Voices, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, Kentucky Riverkeeper and Waterkeeper, represented by lawyers with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Wall Street Raises Following Jobs Data
Reuters reports that U.S. stocks edged higher on Friday on stronger-than-expected job growth in June. This offset concerns from a trade war between the United States and China. The Labor Department said nonfarm payrolls increased by 213,000 jobs last month. This tops expectations of 195,000. The unemployment rate rose from an 18-year low to 4.0 percent and average hourly earnings rose 0.2 percent. The moderate wage growth could allay fears of a strong build-up in inflation pressures. This may keep the Federal Reserve on a path of gradual interest rate increases. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/KMDPXx-Iwqk/wall-street-edges-higher-as-strong-jobs-data-offsets-trade-worries-idUSKBN1JW1KS http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Integrated Water Management & The City Agenda
The environmental benefits of integrated water management (IWM) speak for themselves – what city wouldn’t want a more sustainable water supply? But using a systems approach to merge water management planning with the city’s larger agenda can offer benefits to all through improved recreation, job creation, and more. Howard Neukrug is well-known for his service as Philadelphia’s Water Commissioner where he implemented the renowned Green City, Clean Waters program, successfully forging and articulating connections between IWM and good jobs, street upgrades, and long-term savings for ratepayers. Tom Rhoads is the Commissioner of the Onondaga County, NY Department of Water Environment Protection, implementing the award-winning Save the Rain program that uses IWM approaches to not only reduce combined sewer overflows but also train Syracuse residents for green jobs, revitalize vacant lots, and restore lakeside recreation. Senior Loeb Scholar lecture: David Harvey
3/28/16 It is David Harvey’s contention that the production of space, especially the distribution and organization of the territory, constitutes a principal aspect of capitalist economies. His writings on this theme have contributed to the ongoing political debate on globalization and on the different spatial strategies associated to global processes. A foundation of Harvey’s intellectual project is his “close reading” and interpretation of Karl Marx’s Capital, which he has taught and read for decades and documented in his Companion to Marx’s Capital (2010). But Harvey’s work is distinguished by the way he has brought Marxism together with geography with productive results for each discipline. For instance, he has approached the overaccumulation of capital by way of its reflection in spatial expansion in order to demonstrate its causative role. His book Limits to Capital (1982), which traces this argument, is a mainstay of the contemporary understanding of capitalism’s perennial economic crises (among others are Ernest Mandel’s Late Capitalism (1972), Giovanni Arrighi’s Long 20th Century (1994) and Robert Brenner’s Economics of Global Turbulence (2006)). Among other ideas, Harvey is known for his critical interpretation of the ideas of Henri Lefebvre and his own formulation of the “right to the city.” His book Spaces of Hope (2000) explores a role for architecture in bridging between the human body and the uneven development that is characteristic of globalization. Asked to single out a favorite of Harvey’s books, Dean Mohsen Mostafavi refers to Harvey’s book Social Justice and the City (1973) as “an important articulation of the relationship between the city as a physical artifact and its social consequences. His writings have provided an acute analysis of our society and provide an indispensable framework for new forms of spatial imagination." David Harvey, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology & Geography at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), is the 2015–2016 Senior Loeb Scholar.

Week of June 10, 2013. Philly pride is back Ladies and Gentleman!!! Forty people were shot so far in June, 3 dead, 37 injured. 23 schools are scheduled to close due to a $300 million budget deficit. Black students make up 81 percent of the school closings, and they only account for just 58 percent of the overall student population. Oh but don't worry, the state has a great way to deal with the problem, just outside of Philly they've set aside $400 million for a new prison! So we have money for prisons, but none for schools. To make matters worse, all around us, our infrastructure is collapsing! Only in Philly can a routine building demolition turn into a clusterfuck of epic proportions. Amid the death and mayhem that abound, thankfully our smart city stewards and slumlords were quick thinking enough to point the finger at a pot headed, pill popping, scapegoated sub-contractor. If only there was somebody or something watching over us and perhaps warn us to prevent any future tragedies. It turns out we ARE being watched....always. And we PAY them to do it with our stupid smart phones! Last week, we commented on a leak exposing how the government is collecting the phone records and data of millions of Verizon's US customers under a top secret court order. One day later it got EVEN WORSE. The National Security Agency and the FBI are snooping into the main servers of leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting everything we say and do and track our movements. The companies? Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple, you name it..... "They quite literally can watch your ideas form as you type," a source said. Yes, all those hideous, goatlike thoughts of yours. That source turned out to be NSA sub contractor Edward Snowden. Edward Snowden, like Bradley Manning, is a hero. They both belong on the Mount Rushmore of whistleblowers. This is a guy who gave up a job paying at least 200 grand a year, a house in Hawaii and most likely his freedom to let the American people know the truth. Smart phones may follow your every move, but wait until you clowns buy those stupid Google glasses which I bet, will tap into your frontal lobe and predict thought crime, and how about the new xbox1, which has cameras so advanced, that can track your emotions. So think about that the next time you playing Xbox, and your naked, crying and eating a big piece of cake, because Big Brother is always listening and watching. It's good news in a way for me, At least SOMEBODY is reading my erotic Dr. Who fan fiction! Sure, some douchebags will give you the old trope; "If you got nothing to hide, what are you worried about?" Those idiots are confusing privacy with secrecy. All this tech and they still couldn't stop the Boston Marathon tragedy, or, even worse, they let it happen as an excuse to watch us even closer. So what to do? George Orwell said to follow the small rules, so you can break the big ones. Or perhaps we can change the way we communicate with each other and reduce our language to a series of cllck's and pops. Maybe swap our phones with each other to confuse the hell out of the NSA. Or why not try the good ol US Mail? Instead of texting, lets start writing letters to each other. Granted, it's a little slower, but just think of the manpower (sorry, personpower) it will take to read your mail, it will cause a hiring boom, plus it will give a nice bump to all the hardworking mail people out there who are perilously close to losing their jobs. As the great Lee Camp says, " We are now at a true crossroads in America. Do we want to live in a police state? Or do we want to regain the freedom that we brag so much about? But if they are watching you, at least let them know that you are drinking the good stuff. Good stuff like the crisp cold and delicious Commonwealth Ciders "Traditional Dry". Made from the best stuff and the best people on Earth folks. Drinking this uncommon elixir will give you the courage, fortitude and tastiness to slog through these dark times and shine a beacon of hope......for better days ahead. Til Next time folks, i'm AP Ticker and I speak for the trees. Scrapple TV is written by: Scott Colan Brendan Skwire Steve Galley Johnny Zito
