How to Install a New Chain on a Full Suspension Mountain Bike

03:56
Measuring a new chain is a vital part of setting up a smooth drivetrain. Too short and you won't be able to shift to higher gears or worse, you can damage your expensive rear derailleur. Too long and the chain will slap around unnecessarily and increase the risk of dropping a chain. Most people, however, do not take chain growth into account when fitting a fresh chain onto their full suspension frames. Ignoring chain growth can be really bad news. If the chain is too short, if a rider bottoms out their rear suspension in a tall gear there will not be enough chain to accommodate the chain growth. This will lead to the derailleur being ripped off of the hanger and potentially into the wheel. This is a dangerous and costly failure to replace, with at the least a trashed derailleur and hanger, and almost certainly a wheel rebuild! Seems unlikely, but it can happen more easily than you think! In this video, we learn how to measure a chain to take the suspension system's chain growth into account.

Diagnose Chain Length For Bike Derailleurs

00:51
On a derailleur gear system the chain shifts between cog wheels of different sizes. The system adapts to the demands for different amounts of chain with a spring-loaded arm that moves the bottom jockey wheel backwards to increase or decrease the path the chain must follow. Subscribe to our videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/madegoodorg?sub_confirmation=1 Visit our website: https://www.madegood.com/bikes/ Visit our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/user/madegoodorg 00:06 Step 1 - Long Enough for derailleurs? Run the chain around the two biggest cog wheels, the fastest at the front and slowest at the back. Don’t thread it through the derailleurs. Find the shortest length that would connect and add on 1 inch, one complete inner and outer link. This is usually the ideal length for modern derailleur systems. 00:25 Step 2 - Short Enough for derailleurs? Thread the chain through the derailleurs and round the two smallest cog wheels, the slowest at the front and the fastest at the back. Offer up the two ends of the chain and match the link that makes the chain short enough so that the bottom run of chain doesn’t rub on swing arm near the top jockey wheel on the rear derailleur. Pro Tip In practice you never need to use either of these ‘oxymoronic’ gears, they are not at the extremes of the range and can be duplicated by other gears elsewhere in the system, but you don’t want the chain to jam in the derailleur system if they are selected mistakenly. #BikeRepair #HowTo #BicycleMaintenance

How to fit a new, gold, KMC chain to a 11 speed, full suspension MTB

I didn't have my old chain to measure the correct length. The gold KMC, 11 speed chain can be put on either way. KMC have writing on both sides of the chain. I had total out 2 links to get the correct tension, taking out one link at a time. Hopefully I have done it correctly and saved myself a visit to the bike repair shop. With the correct derailleur (short cage derailleur with 28t max cog or mid cage with 32t cogs) and chainrings (a manufacturer intended spread such as 34-50, 36-52, 39-53, etc), this will always ensure that your chain is the right length to work in every possible gear combination. If you are using a wide range cassette with a short cage derailleur or prefer an unusually large jump between chainrings and have a custom setup, you'll need to set chain length in the large chainring and large cog to ensure that your chain is long enough to prevent damaging your derailleur or frame.

Shimano Ultegra (or other) chain change

02:39
Take note, the following instructions do not apply for measuring chain length with a 28 or 29 tooth sprocket. Please see your manufacturer's (Shimano/Campagnolo) instructions for those. The thing to note is that the outer link should pull the inner through the connecting pin, not the other way around. CONTRARY TO WHAT I HAVE ON THE VIDEO! I had made a wrong interpretation before filming. I stand corrected. Shimano's exact text concerning this: "We strongly recommend setting the connecting pin in the hole of the outer link at the front end in the direction of chain movement". -------------------- This is a quick guide on how to change a Shimano Ultegra chain on your bike. I've create this guide as I keep forgetting how to properly install the chain according to Shimano's recommendations, which state not only a correct side to install the chain, but also a direction, with regards to the connecting link. The later is illustrated in diagram "A". Before you take apart the chain that is in place, make sure that, while the chain sits on the big ring and the smallest sprocket, both pulleys' axles line up vertically. If they don't, you'll want to add or remove the appropriate number of links in order to make them line up, as this is what determines the length of the chain. Shimano's chains come in different lengths. Namely, 114, 116 or 118 links per chain. I usually get the 116 links ones, but only need 111, so I have to remove 5. As most carpenters would say: "measure twice, cut once". You don't have to push the pin completely out. Just make it clear the inner link and twist it to break the chain. Weave the chain properly through the pulleys and derailleurs with the opened part at the bottom and find a way to hold both sides of the chain, with the outer connecting link on the forward side, hanging from the big ring, and its inner link on the other side, hanging from the rear derailleur. Now put the pin. I'll now use the chain tool to push it in. You'll feel resistance when the pin's groove goes through the outer side of the link, then it will ease off until you get to the other side of the link, where you'll feel resistance again. Once it becomes easy to push, stop. Make sure the pin is pushed flush with the outer edge of the link and use pliers to break off the guide. Often times, the pin will not allow the chain to bend freely, as you can see here, and this may cause issues when changing gears. Flex the chain sideways gently and lubricate until this is resolved. Finally, with the chain on the big ring and the smallest sprocket, make sure both pulleys are still in line vertically. You now have your new chain installed, and as clean as can be, probably for the last time in my case...

How To Change Chainrings - Changing Your Chain Rings For Road Or Mountain Bikes

03:39
Changing your bike's chainrings is a relatively simple task and requires just a couple of tools. Daniel Lloyd shows you how to do it in the latest of our Maintenance Monday videos. Follow GCN on YouTube: http://gcn.eu/gcnsubs Chainrings from any of the major manufacturers, Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo or FSA all use similar methods of being held in place. If your chainrings are old and damaged, or just worn out from a lot of use, changing your chainrings is a pretty easy way to freshen up your groupset. For most chainrings all you need is a 5mm allen key or torx spanner and a special tool to hold the back part of the chainring bolt in place. Once you know how to change your chainrings it's an easy job to switch out new rings for your old, tired chain rings, so don't hang around, get upgrading! I have used some of the more expensive, higher-end chains in the past specifically the 1071 which has hollow pins - basically the same chain with hollow pins and it did seem to provide quite a bit longer service life. this kmc x10 I was extremely pleased with. Oh back to this one by the way this I think I got this one on ebay for about twenty dollars usually they're roughly I think 25 to 27 on ebay and slightly upwards of thirty dollars at retail price and your local bike shop. this one here i got for twenty dollars on ebay as well. I was extremely pleased with it it shifted well and it provided an exceptionally long service life and put quite a few miles on it, some of them are really harsh in harsh conditions, sand and so on and it just seemed to go on and go on. its really got some kind of tough anti-wear coating on it like they're advertising. suggest again i paid twenty dollars on ebay for this one. I think usually there again they're upward they're usually on ebay around twenty-four twenty-five dollars and i'm not sure what the retail price at the shop is but I'm expecting again slightly upwards of thirty dollars or so in a shop. so you see this one weighs in at 245 grams now again it's cut to the same exact length as this one. so you're getting a five gram big deal weight difference with the kmc x10. now keep in mind this is one of the basic entry-level chains from Sram and this is one of the basic entry-level chains from kmc. let's move on to this x 10 gold SL. now this is the piece that I cut off to cut it down to length and also comes with or all of these came with their own quick-disconnect masterlink. the package of this gold 1. i guess it's on the back our ports on the front it says somewhere on here that it was 241 grams. well I weighed the whole chain with the piece that I cut off of it. the amount of scale here with the master link and as you can see it's 255 grams. that is as it comes out of the package so the weight that they give on the package on and for some reason I'm not finding it on here whole sudden is not entirely accurate but that being said with the master link aside and the short piece that I cut off the side this chain cut to the correct length for my bike weighs in at 235 grams or so. that's or 230 grams here so that's 15 grams lighter than the basic x10 SL 320 grams lighter than the SRAM pc 1050. this chain is forty dollars roughly that's what they're going for on ebay retail price in a store i think they're around eighty to ninety dollars so you have to make that call. is that difference in cost worth it to you to save 15 or so grams? This gold one also says that it has a titanium nitride coating on it which I guess is what explains the cold color.

Shimano 11 Speed Cassette Problems

02:37
I ran into this Shimano problem twice and that's one too many times. Should we be worried about buying knock-off 11-speed components? I don't know. This Shimano Dynasys 11 speed cassette had difficulty installing right out of the box. The last gear or cog which is an 11 tooth gear had trouble settling in and engaging correctly to its neighbor the 10 gear. One taking the time to finesse it, it dropped into place and the lock ring was able to thread on with no problems. The other problem I ran into twice as well the initial fit onto the freehub body. The 11-speed cassette did not want to fit at all. The notching's in the cassette were too narrow and had to be filed to widen the spline spacing. This may be too much trouble for most and quite frankly, why should you. Just return it!!
