This lesson is number 4 in the Algebra 2 course series. It shows the distinction between unknowns and variables. Examples are shown of how to solve linear equations. It also shows how to solve absolute value equations. It demonstrates the concept of absolute value using a number line. It shows how there are usually two solutions for absolute value equations, but also shows how an absolute value equation can have no solutions. An absolute value equation can have one solution. The lesson emphasizes the importance of checking solutions.

Our Mission: MashUp Math is our creative solution to reviving students' passion and interest for learning mathematics. As young educators, we know that all students learn math differently and that a one-size-fits-all approach is simply ineffective. The idea that the ability to understand mathematics is reserved for a select few did not sit well with us.
In addition to sharing free teacher resources (which are teacher created resources) in the form of teacher worksheets, we share new YouTube math videos every week that help math teachers and students to better understand mathematics and the common core. Our lessons can be aligned with the common core standards for common core math and are immensely popular with flipped learning educators and anyone experimenting with flipped classroom learning.
As educators, we know what it takes to be a super math teacher and that we can’t always do it alone. In addition to our cool math videos, we share articles, blogs, inspirational quotes, teacher math worksheets, and math worksheets. Whether you teach in the flipped classroom, operate in blended education or online blended learning, or are interested in finding cool math online, MashUp Math will have something for you!
Many students think of us as a math tutor online or as their on-demand online tutor. Others trust us for all things related to online math education—coming to use when they find themselves thinking “I don’t understand my homework assignment! and need some homework help!
It is also a part of our mission to make progressive steps in mathematics education. For one, our content is created with the goal of moving students from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. We also aim to meet the unique needs of ESL math students and support math for girls as well.
Many of our users serve as a special education teacher and use our cool videos to support their special education students with special needs. Our free online math lessons are also high adaptable to your homeschool curriculum and should be added to your list of free homeschool resources.
We are also very involved in the edtech world and are very popular with Google Classroom educators, Math Games Classroom Educators, and teachers who support the use of iPad for education!
So if you could use some help with everyday math and are a student with a unique learning style or learning styles—like Visual Auditory Learning! Or if you’re tired of math games and are more interested in an easy-to-follow tutorial, check us out and learn math with us. No matter your school’s standards of learning, our YouTube Math Videos Lessons will work for you!

Explore the steps of transcription and translation in protein synthesis! This video explains several reasons why proteins are so important before explaining the roles of mRNA, rRNA, and tRNA in the steps of protein synthesis! Expand details for contents and resources. 👇Video handouts and resources on http://www.amoebasisters.com/handouts. This video replaces our old protein synthesis video: https://youtu.be/h5mJbP23Buo
Table of Contents:
0:46 Why are proteins important?
1:48 Introduction to RNA
2:22 Steps of Protein Synthesis
2:43 Transcription
3:54 Translation
6:08 Introduction to mRNA Codon Chart
7:51 Quick Summary Image
Vocabulary in this video includes DNA, mRNA, rRNA, and tRNA. This video mentions that proteins can be made of 1 or more polypeptide chains and that proteins typically experience folding and other modifications (to be functional proteins.) Codons and the amino acids they code for is represented by standard charts can be found in the public domain. While the rectangle chart is the common format, there may be other ways to represent the information. P.S. If learning about mutations, check out this cool codon chart that includes mutations(!!) in the public domain: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Notable_mutations.svg
Our videos are designed to introduce basic concepts and hopefully to inspire students to stay curious about the content. We simply cannot include all of the exceptions and minute details in a video under 10 minutes, and this is why we so frequently remind people of this in our videos. We want students to go beyond our videos to explore the depth of the material.
P.S. On our website, we emphasize that our videos contain science comics- not scientific illustrations. In real life, amoebas don't look like our characters. Our illustrated cell cartoons are definitely not to scale. Nitrogen and carbon don't tap dance. DNA is right-handed (but there are exceptions- worth a google) and doesn't have eyes...a face...or a top hat...

This video is about creating a two variable data table feature. The use case for this is if you want to input two varying pieces of data and see how the output changes. For example say you are taking out a loan and maybe not sure how much you want to take out. At the same time you are unsure of the rate you might get. What are the possibilities of monthly payments you'll have? It's almost endless! With a two variable data table you can a range of interest rate AND a range of loan amounts and let the handy-dandy data table feature figure out the different monthly payments that are possible. Amazing! See the magic at work in the video.
