Molar Volume of a Gas Pre Laboratory experimental procedure for the Dawson College NYA General Chemistry pre university course. In this experiment the standard molar volume of hydrogen gas will be determined. The gas, produced from the reaction of excess hydrochloric acid with magnesium, will be collected by water displacement. The observed molar volume for the hydrogen gas will then be converted to the corresponding molar volume at STP and the result compared with that of an ideal gas.

EXPERIMENT : Determination of molar volume of oxygen Laboratory equipment: test tube, florence flask, burner, glass Chemicals: KClO3 + MnO2, H2O Procedure: In a clean, dry test tube put two tablespoons of the mixture (KClO3 + MnO2) and weigh all together. The test tube secure in a tilted position on the stand. Fill the flask with tap water to the top. With same water fill the glass of 400mL almost to the top. Set wetted plug with tubes on the flask and pull with your mouth water in the drain pipe. When the drain pipe is filled with water, squeeze tube with fingers and open end of tube dive in a prepared glass of water. According to the law of connected vessels water from the flask will exceed to the glass so we need quickly put pipe with plug in tube and firmly secure. Check that the opening the drain pipe is under the water in a glass and raise glass if it's necessary to equalize the level of water in a glass and a flask (the gas pressure in the flask must be equal to the atmospheric pressure in the room). In this position, close the pipe with clamp and pour water from a glass. Return the drain pipe in a empty glass, and then be sure to take off the clamp. Take a gas burner in hand and begin to gently heat the tube. potassium chlorate is breaking up on oxygen and potassium chloride. Oxygen forces water from the flask, which is then collecting in a glass. After oxygen forces about 300mL of water stop the heating and wait for the tubes to cool down. With cooling part of the water returned to the flask. After the tube was cooled to room temperature, equalize level of water in the flask and the glass. This is achieved by raising the flask, if the water level in the flask below the water level in the glass. In this position to close the clamp. The volume of water in a glass measure with graduated cylinder. Weigh the tube with the reacted mixture, and read on the pressure in the room on barometer and measure the temperature of the remaining water in the flask. Outcome: 25,2 L/mol

Converting Between Moles and Liters of a Gas at STP

At STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure:0º C and 1 atm), 1 mole of gas takes up 22.4 L of volume. We'll learn how to convert back and forth between moles and liters of a gas at STP. Avogadro's Law is sometimes used as the name for the fact that 1 mole = 22.4 L at STP. We will look at how to do calculations and also look at some common mistakes. The Ideal Gas Law must be used when a gas is not at STP, and it's important to make sure that you're dealing with a gas, and not a liquid or a solid.
