The Outback is the vast, remote, arid area of Australia. The term "the outback" is generally used to refer to locations that are comparatively more remote than those areas named "the bush" which, colloquially, can refer to any lands outside the main urban areas. Early European exploration of inland Australia was sporadic. More focus was on the more accessible and fertile coastal areas. The first party to successfully cross the Blue Mountains just outside Sydney was led by Gregory Blaxland in 1813, 25 years after the colony was established. People starting with John Oxley in 1817, 1818 and 1821, followed by Charles Sturt in 1829–1830 attempted to follow the westward-flowing rivers to find an "inland sea", but these were found to all flow into the Murray River and Darling River which turn south. Over the period 1858 to 1861, John McDouall Stuart led six expeditions north from Adelaide into the outback, culminating in successfully reaching the north coast of Australia and returning, without the loss of any of the party's members' lives. This contrasts with the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition in 1860–61 which was much better funded, but resulted in the deaths of three of the members of the transcontinental party. The Overland Telegraph line was constructed in the 1870s along the route identified by Stuart. Exploration of the outback continued in the 1950s when Len Beadell explored, surveyed and built many roads in support of the nuclear weapons tests at Emu Field and Maralinga and rocket testing on the Woomera Prohibited Area. Mineral exploration continues as new mineral deposits are identified and developed. While the early explorers used horses to cross the outback, the first woman to make the journey riding a horse was Anna Hingley, who rode from Broome to Cairns in 2006. Other than agriculture and tourism, the main economic activity in this vast and sparsely settled area is mining. Owing to the complete absence of mountain building and glaciation since the Permian (in many areas since the Cambrian) ages, the outback is extremely rich in iron, aluminium, manganese and uranium ores, and also contains major deposits of gold, nickel, iron, lead and zinc ores. Because of its size, the value of grazing and mining is considerable. Major mines and mining areas in the outback include opals at Coober Pedy, Lightning Ridge and White Cliffs, metals at Broken Hill, Tennant Creek, Olympic Dam and the remote Challenger Mine. Oil and gas are extracted in the Cooper Basin around Moomba. In Western Australia the Argyle diamond mine in the Kimberley (Western Australia) is the world's biggest producer of natural diamonds and contributes approximately one-third of the world's natural supply. The Pilbara region's economy is dominated by mining and petroleum industries. Most of Australia's iron ore is also mined in the Pilbara and it also has one of the world's major manganese mines. Because of the low and erratic rainfall over most of the outback, combined with soils which are usually not very fertile, inland Australia is relatively sparsely settled. More than 90 percent of Australians live in urban areas on the coast. However the outback and the history of its exploration and settlement provides Australians with a culturally valued backdrop, and stories of swagmen, squatters, and bushrangers are central to the national ethos. The song "Waltzing Matilda", which is about a swagman and squatters, is probably Australia's best internationally known and best-loved song. Aboriginal communities in outback regions have not been displaced as they have been in areas of intensive agriculture and large cities, in coastal areas. For this reason a significant proportion of Australia's indigenous population lives in the Outback, in areas such as the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara lands in northern South Australia. The total population of the Outback in Australia declined from 700,000 in 1996 to 690,000 in 2006. Largest decline was noted in Outback NT, while Kimberley and Pilbara showed population increase during the same period. The sex ratio is 1040 males for 1000 females and 17% of the total population is indigenous. The Royal Flying Doctor Service started service in 1928 and helps people who live in the outback of Australia. In former times, serious injuries or illnesses often meant death due to the lack of proper medical facilities and trained personnel. In most outback communities, the number of children is too small for a conventional school to operate. Children are educated at home by the School of the Air. Originally the teachers communicated with the children via radio, but now satellite telecommunication is used instead.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. The country’s name has been derived from the words "Serra Leao," which in Portuguese means "Lioness Mountains". In 1462, Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra mapped the hills surrounding what is now Freetown Harbour, naming the shaped formation Serra da Leoa or "Serra Leoa". 2. Sierra Leone is one of the smallest republics in Africa and in terms of size it ranks as the 118th largest country in the world. For a country as small as this, Sierra Leone is home to an astounding 16 groups belong to different ethnicities. Each ethnic group has their own language. The Temne are the largest and most influential group followed by Mende group. 3. Freetown, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, is the capital and largest city of the country. 4. One of the top 10 diamond producing nations in the world, it also earns a lot of foreign currency from mineral exports. Though rich in diamonds, it has struggled against exploitation of resources and trade problems. Sierra Leone is famous for ‘blood-diamonds’ that were mined and sold during the civil war to raise money for weapons. 5. Sierra Leone is a predominantly Muslim country, though with an influential Christian minority. Sierra Leone is regarded as one of the most religiously tolerant nations in the world. Muslims and Christians collaborate and interact with each other peacefully. Religious violence is extremely rare in the country. 6. Although English is the official language spoken at schools and government administration, the Krio language is the most widely spoken language across Sierra Leone and is spoken by 97% of the country's population. The language is native to the Sierra Leone Creole people or Krios, (a community of about 300,000 descendants of freed slaves from the West Indies, United States and Great Britain). 7. Sierra Leone, also known as “the little jewel” in West Africa is blessed with a fusion of different cultures, religions and races. About sixteen ethnic groups inhabit Sierra Leone, each with its own language and customs. The two largest and most influential are the Temne and the Mende people. Botswana is one of the few African countries that maintained a stable and representative democracy after independence. This largely Christian nation lies just north of South Africa and is one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries. You can now support this channel via Patreon, by accessing the link bellow. Botswana is a country located in the southern part of the African continent. For the most part, Botswana has a flat landscape and is about 70% covered by the Kalahari dessert. 2. There are more African elephants in Botswana than anywhere else. Botswana is home to the world’s biggest concentration of African elephants, of which the highest concentration is to be found in Chobe National Park. 3. The Okavango Delta is one of the largest inland deltas in the world. It’s a beautiful oasis in the Kalahari desert, whose waters start flowing from the highlands of Angola all the way over the sands of the Kalahari desert. The Delta gives life to many forms of life which seems to be unexpected in the middle of a desert. 4. Before its independence in 1966 Botswana was a British protectorate and was one of the poorest and least developed countries in Africa. One year after gaining independence, a huge diamond mine was discovered in Orapa. Today Botswana is one of the most prosperous countries in Africa. Botswana is the worlds biggest diamond producing country in terms of value and the second biggest in terms of production. Diamonds count for nearly half of the government’s value. 5. It has a population of just over 1.8 million people and is the size of France or Texas. The majority of people live on the eastern side of the country. 6. Botswana has never really known political conflict and strife. It was a protectorate of Britain only after three chiefs from Botswana travelled to England to request such an arrangement. It was never colonised and has always enjoyed a refreshingly democratic style of governance. The ‘kgotla’ system is an entrenched Setswana culture. It is based on a culture of democracy and free speech where every person has the right to speak their mind. 7. The Makgadikgadi Pans are a popular tourist destination in Botswana. These are the largest salt pans in the world and stretch over an area of 12 000 square kilometres. When the pans fill up during the rainy season, the area attracts the most incredible variety of wildlife. The large colony of flamingos that descend on the pans is a breath-taking sight for tourists visiting Botswana. More information about the video content bellow: 1. The Namib desert, at 80 million years, is the world’s oldest desert. Namib means “open space”. 2. Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon – it is 161km long, up to 27km wide and 550m deep, formed about 500 million years ago. 3. Shipwrecks dot the wild Skeleton Coast coastline and elephants wander through the sand dunes that plunge directly into the freezing Atlantic ocean. A desolate place that’s extremely rewarding for the adventurous traveler. 4. Namibia is the second least densely populated country in the world. It has a population of ~2 million in a country that is twice the size of California. Only Mongolia is less populous. Keep in mind that Namibia’s land mass is the equivalent to that of Spain and Germany combined. 5. Namibia is one of the youngest countries in Africa. It only got independence from South African rule on March 21, 1990. It is currently the 3rd youngest country in Africa. 6. Kolmanskop, located near to the town of Lüderitz, is Namibia’s most famous ghost town. Kolmanskop was established as a mining town when in 1908 diamonds were found along the cost in Lüderitz. The diamond rush led to the establishment of the town. When 30 years later, the diamonds in that area became depleted, Kolmanskop changed into a ghost town. Currently Kolmanskop is one of the most beautiful and special places to visit in Namibia, especially for photographers. 7. Even though Namibia has a very small population, the country is home to 13 different ethnic groups. The Ovambo group represents nearly half the population. The most famous ethnic group are the Himba, a semi nomadic tribe living in the north eastern part of the country. They still live according to traditional beliefs and culture and especially the woman are known for rubbing their skin with red ochre. 7 Fascinating Facts about Guinea

03:24
Let’s talk about Guinea. First and foremost, there are four countries that contain the name Guinea: 3 in Africa and one in Oceania. Why? Because Europeans called a big chunk of West Africa simply Guinea and the 3 modern African countries are in that region. And the Oceanian Papua New Guinea got its name because Europeans thought the people there look like the people from Guinea. You can now support this channel via Patreon, by accessing the link bellow. More information about the video content bellow: 1. The region was called Guinea broadly when it was first "discovered" by Europeans, before the colonization. If you look at the map, Europeans had already started to name specific parts of "Guinea" individually: Gold Coast , Wheat Coast, Slave Coast, Ivory Coast, etc. When Europeans were first exploring western Africa, they gave broad regional names. Specifics got filled in later. 2. The Niger River, which starts in the densely forested southeast highlands of Guinea, is the principal river of western Africa. It is the third longest river of Africa. Its name possibly comes from the Tuareg phrase 'her n gheren', meaning 'river of rivers'. This name, shortened to ngher, is a local name used along the middle stretch of the river near Timbuktu, Mali. 3. The land that is now Guinea belonged to a series of African empires until France colonized it in the 1890s, and made it part of French West Africa. Guinea declared its independence from France on 2 October 1958. From independence until the presidential election of 2010, Guinea was governed by a number of autocratic rulers. 4. Conakry, the capital of Guinea, is apparently one of the wettest capitals in the world with an incredible 3.7 metres of rain per year! 5. Guinea boasts of spectacular landscape with lush and verdant rainforests and plenty of wildlife in the south. The waterfall-rich Fouta Djalon Plateau in the west has breathtaking scenery. 6. The country of Guinea has vast amounts of mineral and agricultural resources, containing approximately 25% of the world’s bauxite reserves, a major component of aluminium. But Guinea's poorly developed infrastructure and rampant corruption ranks the country as the 182nd least developed nation out of 188. 7. The literacy rate of Guinea is one of the lowest in the world: in 2010 it was estimated that only 41% of adults were literate. Primary education is compulsory for 6 years, but most children do not attend for so long, and many do not go to school at all. Children, particularly girls, are kept out of school in order to assist their parents with domestic work or agriculture, or to be married: Guinea has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world. Buddhist monk walking STORYLINE: An Australian couple accused of stealing gemstones in Laos will be freed within days after six months in jail, their lawyer said. The Australian government has been making strenuous diplomatic efforts to have Kerry and Kay Danes freed following their arrest on 23 December, 2000, after gemstones disappeared from Laos' largest sapphire mine, where Kerry Danes was in charge of security. As the husband and wife were never charged, the Australian government demanded their release. Their lawyer, Ted Tzovaras, told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio that after a month of intensive negotiations with Laos authorities, he expected the couple's imminent release. The Danes had this week finally been charged with embezzlement, destruction of evidence and tax evasion, Tzovaras said. There was no reference to stolen gems. The charges and a court hearing were formal precursors to the Danes being released from detention, he said. "These charges which are quite broad are a necessary step to the resolution of the matter to the clearance of the charges against Kerry and Kay and ultimately to their release," he said. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer confirmed charges had finally been laid and said he hoped the Danes would soon be released. Downer said "delicate" negotiations were continuing. The Australian government has maintained a major diplomatic effort to have the two released. Prime Minister John Howard appealed to Laos Prime Minister Bounnyang Vorachit to release the Danes, earlier this year while Downer has held meetings with his Laos counterpart. More information about the video content bellow: 1. The Republic of Liberia began as a settlement of the American Colonization Society (ACS), who believed African Americans would face better chances for freedom in Africa than in the United States. The country declared its independence on July 26, 1847. The U.S. did not recognize Liberia's independence until during the American Civil War on February 5, 1862. 2. Liberia is the only African republic to have self-proclaimed independence without gaining independence through revolt from any other nation, being Africa's first and oldest modern republic. Liberia maintained and kept its independence during the European colonial era. 3. Containing one of the richest ecosystems on the African continent, the Sapo National Park is declared as one of the 261 natural wonders of the world. Home to the world-famous pygmy hippopotamus, this sanctuary has several other animal species and is spread over an area equal to the size of Los Angeles, California. 4. Monrovia is the capital city of the West African country of Liberia. Monrovia is named in honor of U.S. President James Monroe, a prominent supporter of the colonization of Liberia and the American Colonization Society. Along with Washington, D.C., it is one of two national capitals to be named after a U.S. President. 5. Liberia had the second-highest rate of economic growth in the world during the 1950s. But Liberia’s ascending path ended in 1980, with a military coup. Political turmoil continued throughout the year and culminated in 2 extremely violent civil wars in 1989-1997 and 1999-2003. Today the democratic process seems to work and Liberia has started to slowly recover from its bloody past. 6. It is one of only three countries, along with the United States and Burma that does not exclusively use the International System of Units — the modern form of the metric system. 7. Charles King won the presidential elections of 1927 in what was classified by the Guinness Book of Records (1982) as the most fraudulent elections ever reported in world history. According to an official statement, King received 234,000 votes; however, Liberia had 15,000 registered voters at the time. Facts you should know about Angola

03:19
Angola used to be a Portuguese colony that today is a highly multiethnic nation. Its name comes from the word ngola, a title used by the Ndongo kings that reigned in the region. Angola is one of the largest producers of diamonds in the world. It’s also one of the largest African nations. You can now support this channel via Patreon, by accessing the link bellow. More information about the video content bellow: 1. The oil and diamond-rich country is currently rebuilding at full swing after suffering from civil war for 27 years since independence from Portugal in 1975. Now the country of 19 million is finally at peace and is going through a dramatic rebirth. 2. The capital city of Luanda is now one of the most expensive cities in the world. Forget Tokyo or Moscow—Luanda wins. The high prices can be put down to the massive infrastructural investment taking place in response to the relentless gross-domestic-product growth from mining operations. 3. Ruacana Falls, one of Africa’s most beautiful natural wonders is located on the border between Angola and Namibia. 4. Angola’s traditional music is the semba – Brazilian samba is believed to have originated in Angola, where it’s known as “semba”. The two are very similar. Angolan semba was danced to celebrate different occasions and is known as the music of the sea. 5. Angola’s national tree is the majestic Imbondeiro – There is one tree that is special to Angolan. There was a popular belief that God planted this tree, also known as “Baobab” upside down. The unusual looking Imbondeiro tree can be found growing all over the country. Their growth rate is determined by ground water or rainfall and their maximum age, which seems to be in the order of 1,500 years. 6. Angola is the only country in which the Critically Endangered giant sable antelope lives. The antelope is confined to central Angola, where it is primarily located in the Luando Reserve and Cangandala National Park. 7. The government of Angola requires religious groups to petition for legal status with the Ministries of Justice and Culture. To get legal status however they need to abide by the Law on Religion, passed in 2004, which requires that a group should have more than 100,000 members and be present in 12 of the 18 provinces. This has made it hard for the estimated 70 - 80,000 Muslims, mostly migrants from West Africa and Lebanon, to practice freely and the government - which has disputed claims of being anti-Islam - is known to have closed mosques, schools, or community centres. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). This video uses Google TTS en-US-Standard-D voice. SUMMARY ======= The Portuguese Empire (Portuguese: Império Português), also known as the Portuguese Overseas (Ultramar Português) or the Portuguese Colonial Empire (Império Colonial Português), was one of the largest and longest-lived empires in world history. It existed for almost six centuries, from the capture of Ceuta in 1415, to the handover of Portuguese Macau to China in 1999. The empire began in the 15th century, and from the early 16th century it stretched across the globe, with bases in North and South America, Africa, and various regions of Asia and Oceania. The Portuguese Empire has been described as the first global empire in history, a description also given to the Spanish Empire. The Portuguese Empire originated at the beginning of the Age of Discovery, and the power and influence of the Kingdom of Portugal would eventually expand across the globe. In the wake of the Reconquista, Portuguese sailors began exploring the coast of Africa and the Atlantic archipelagos in 1418–19, using recent developments in navigation, cartography and maritime technology such as the caravel, with the aim of finding a sea route to the source of the lucrative spice-trade. In 1488 Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and in 1498 Vasco da Gama reached India. In 1500, either by an accidental landfall or by the crown's secret design, Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil on the South American coast. Over the following decades, Portuguese sailors continued to explore the coasts and islands of East Asia, establishing forts and factories as they went. By 1571 a string of naval outposts connected Lisbon to Nagasaki along the coasts of Africa, the Middle East, India and South Asia. This commercial network and the colonial trade had a substantial positive impact on Portuguese economic growth (1500–1800), when it accounted for about a fifth of Portugal's per-capita income. When King Philip II of Spain (Philip I of Portugal) inherited the Portuguese crown in 1580 there began a 60-year union between Spain and Portugal known to subsequent historiography as the Iberian Union. Though the realms continued to have separate administrations, the Council of Portugal ruled the country and its empire from Madrid. As the King of Spain was also King of Portugal, Portuguese colonies became the subject of attacks by three rival European powers hostile to Spain: the Dutch Republic, England, and France. With its smaller population, Portugal found itself unable to effectively defend its overstretched network of trading posts, and the empire began a long and gradual decline. Eventually, Brazil became the most valuable colony of the second era of empire (1663–1825), until, as part of the wave of independence movements that swept the Americas during the early 19th century, it broke away in 1822. The third era of empire covers the final stage of Portuguese colonialism after the independence of Brazil in the 1820s. By then, the colonial possessions had been reduced to forts and plantations along the African coastline (expanded inland during the Scramble for Africa in the late 19th century), Portuguese Timor, and enclaves in India (Portuguese India) and China (Portuguese Macau). The 1890 British Ultimatum led to the contraction of Portuguese ambitions in Africa. Under António Salazar (in office 1932–1968), the Second Portuguese Republic made some ill-fated attempts to cling on to its last remaining colonies. Under the ideology of Pluricontinentalism, the regime renamed its colonies "overseas provinces" while retaining the system of forced labour, from which only a small indigenous élite was normally exempt. In 1961 India annexed Goa and Dahomey (now Benin) annexed Fort of São João Baptista de Ajudá. The Portuguese Colonial War in Africa lasted from 1961 until the final overthrow of the Estado Novo regime in 1974. The so-called Carnation Revolution of April 1974 in Lisbon led to the hasty decolonization of Portuguese Africa and to the 1975 ...

The Head-Hunters" Papua over 1,400 islands, large and small, scattered between the Equator and north Australia. Many of these islands are tiny, uninhabited coral atolls. As a result of the last glaciation, many communities were cut off. The different ethnic groups that live on the islands of Papua were greatly feared by the sailors who dared to navigate the waters of these 'accursed' islands. Head-hunters and cannibals, these fierce warriors of the sea remained isolated until well into the twentieth century. Their bloodthirsty fame meant that, for a long time, their territory remained unexplored by Europeans. Traditional customs and rituals remain strong among the inhabitants of these islands. The young Tolais, from the island of New Britain, have to undergo a severe initiation before being able to sail alone. They have to "go to see the fish", as this ceremony is called; it is a test of their courage and capacity for suffering. As well as fishers, they are also gatherers and farmers. The women are responsible for household chores and looking after the children, as well as gathering fruits from the forest. The men plant the yam fields, take care of the pigs and go fishing. They are very hierarchical societies. For example, in the Trobriand islands, above the village chiefs stands the figure of the Paramon Chif, who is responsible for everything that happens on the islands. Western Australia has some of the best beaches in the world. Many of them are accessible by 4WD, and even the busier beaches are much less packed than the alternatives on the Eastern coast of Australia. If there’s one thing you should be doing with your 4WD, its exploring more of our coastline! With that in mind, here are some of the best 4WD accessible beaches in Western Australia. It's a nice smooth beach and you can drive for miles... be careful of the Turtles nesting areas though... driving closer to the water gives you a firmer footing and make sure you check the high tide timings... take a spade and look out for the nude freaks that somehow think it’s a nudist beach.. at least you’ll have a laugh... LOL

New Dawn UHC: S10E1 - the dankest memes come at the darkest times

20:56
Hello everyone! Welcome to New Dawn Season 10! This season was an FFA, Paranoia, PermaDay, 1.5.2 Terrain, Moved Center match. Bit of a mouthful. Paranoia is a gamemode which broadcasts your coordinates when you mine gold/diamond, and craft various items such as enchants, healing and brewing stands. The match was eternal day, the map was made on Minecraft version 1.5.2, and the center of the map was not at 0,0 but an arbitrary set of coordinates. New Dawn is a UHC recorded round created by BJPlays, featuring a cast of players mostly from Australia, but with a few international members. UHC is a minecraft Gamemode where you don't naturally regenerate health, so every bit of damage you take is a big deal. Journey to the Center of the Earth By Jules Verne - Full Audiobook (with captions)

10:36:09
The intrepid Professor Liedenbrock embarks upon the strangest expedition of the nineteenth century: a journey down an extinct Icelandic volcano to the Earth's very core. In his quest to penetrate the planet's primordial secrets, the geologist--together with his quaking nephew Axel and their devoted guide, Hans--discovers an astonishing subterranean menagerie of prehistoric proportions. Verne's imaginative tale is at once the ultimate science fiction adventure and a reflection on the perfectibility of human understanding and the psychology of the questor. Country - Pop - "From This Moment On" by Shania Twain (1997)

03:40
Country - Pop - "From This Moment On" by Shania Twain (1997) An instrumental arrangement based on a recorded or transcribed midi sequence by Windjammer Notes: "From This Moment On" is a song by Canadian recording artist Shania Twain, taken from her third studio album, Come On Over (1997). The song was written by Twain, while additional production and songwriting was done by Robert John "Mutt" Lange. After finishing the track, both Twain and Lange concluded that the song would work best as a duet. Despite their first choice for the duet being Elton John, they chose country singer Bryan White instead, who took the opportunity. It was then released on March 14, 1998 in North America and Oceania. "From This Moment On" is a country pop track which received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who deemed it as one of the album's highlights. The song achieved moderate commercial success, reaching the top ten in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and United States. It also charted in France, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Sweden, as well on several Billboard component charts. An accompanying music video was directed by Paul Boyd, which depicts Twain walking on a hallway until she's joined by an orchestra to perform the song. "From This Moment On" has been performed on every tour by Twain since its release. Kate Hennessy - Repatriation, Digital Media, and Culture in the Virtual Museum

40:37
Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the School of Library, Archival, and Information Studies (SLAIS). Many Canadian First Nations and Aboriginal organizations are using digital media to revitalize their languages and assert control over the representation of their cultures. At the same time, museums, academic institutions, and individuals are digitizing their ethnographic collections to make them accessible to originating communities. In this presentation I will explore how the term "virtual repatriation" is being applied to the digitization and return of heritage to Aboriginal communities, and draw attention to the opportunities, challenges, and critiques associated with digitization, circulation, and remix of Aboriginal cultural heritage. I will discuss recent projects including the collaborative production of a Virtual Museum of Canada exhibit with the Doig River First Nation, a Dane-zaa community in northeastern British Columbia, and a current collaborative production of a virtual exhibit with members of the Inuvialuit community in the western Arctic and curators at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. I will show that while access to cultural heritage in digital collections can facilitate the articulation of intellectual property rights to digital cultural heritage----including the right to restrict circulation----it also amplifies the difficulty of enforcing those rights. Kate Hennessy is an Assistant Professor specializing in Media at Simon Fraser University's School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT). She has a PhD in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia and an MA in the Anthropology of Media from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies. As the director of the Making Culture Lab at SIAT, her research explores the role of digital technology in the documentation and safeguarding of cultural heritage, and in the mediation of culture, history, objects, and subjects in new forms. Her video and multimedia works investigate documentary methodologies to address Indigenous and settler histories of place and space. She is a founding member of the Ethnographic Terminalia Curatorial Collective, an international group exploring the borders of anthropological, curatorial, and artistic practice (http://ethnographicterminalia.org). As assistant editor of the journal Visual Anthropology Review, she designed its first multimedia volume. Her work has been published in journals such as American Indian Quarterly, Museum Anthropology Review, and Visual Anthropology Review. She was a Trudeau Foundation Scholar from 2006-2010, a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Graduate Scholar from 2005-2009, a Canadian Polar Commission Scholar in 2006-2007, and a Commonwealth Scholar in 2001-2002.

History of Western civilization | Wikipedia audio article

This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: History of Western civilization Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. It is linked to the Roman Empire and with Medieval Western Christendom which emerged from the Middle Ages to experience such transformative episodes as the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, scientific revolution, and the development of liberal democracy. The civilizations of Classical Greece and Ancient Rome are considered seminal periods in Western history; a few cultural contributions also emerged from the pagan peoples of pre-Christian Europe, such as the Celts and Germans, as well as some significant religious contributions derived from Judaism and Hellenistic Judaism stemming back to Second Temple Judea, Galilee, and the early Jewish diaspora; and some other Middle Eastern influences. Christianity and Roman Catholicism has played a prominent role in the shaping of Western civilization, which throughout most of its history, has been nearly equivalent to Christian culture. (There were Christians outside of the West, such as China, India, Russia, Byzantium and the Middle East). Western civilization has spread to produce the dominant cultures of modern Americas and Oceania, and has had immense global influence in recent centuries in many ways. Following the 5th century Fall of Rome, Western Europe entered the Middle Ages, during which period the Catholic Church filled the power vacuum left in the West by the fall of the Western Roman Empire, while the Eastern Roman Empire (or Byzantine Empire) endured in the East for centuries, becoming a Hellenic Eastern contrast to the Latin West. By the 12th century, Western Europe was experiencing a flowering of art and learning, propelled by the construction of cathedrals and the establishment of medieval universities. Christian unity was shattered by the Reformation from the 16th century. A merchant class grew out of city states, initially in the Italian peninsula (see Italian city-states), and Europe experienced the Renaissance from the 14th to the 17th century, heralding an age of technological and artistic advance and ushering in the Age of Discovery which saw the rise of such global European Empires as those of Spain and Portugal. The Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the 18th century. Under the influence of the Enlightenment, the Age of Revolution emerged from the United States and France as part of the transformation of the West into its industrialised, democratised modern form. The lands of North and South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand became first part of European Empires and then home to new Western nations, while Africa and Asia were largely carved up between Western powers. Laboratories of Western democracy were founded in Britain's colonies in Australasia from the mid-19th centuries, while South America largely created new autocracies. In the 20th century, absolute monarchy disappeared from Europe, and despite episodes of Fascism and Communism, by the close of the century, virtually all of Europe was electing its leaders democratically. Most Western nations were heavily involved in the First and Second World Wars and protracted Cold War. World War II saw Fascism defeated in Europe, and the emergence of the United States and Soviet Union as rival global powers and a new "East-West" political contrast. Other than in Russia, the European Empires disintegrated after World War II and civil rights movements and widescale multi-ethnic, multi-faith migrations to Europe, the Americas and Oceania lowered the earlier predominance of ethnic Europeans in Western culture. European nations moved towards greater economic and political co-operation through the European Union. The Cold War ended around 1990 with the collapse of Soviet imposed Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. In the 21st century, the Western World retains significant global economic power and influ ...

Nineteen Eighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel published in 1949 by English author George Orwell. The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. The superstate and its residents are dictated to by a political regime euphemistically named English Socialism, shortened to "Ingsoc" in Newspeak, the government's invented language. The superstate is under the control of the privileged elite of the Inner Party, a party and government that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as "thoughtcrime", which is enforced by the "Thought Police". The tyranny is ostensibly overseen by Big Brother, the Party leader who enjoys an intense cult of personality, but who may not even exist. The Party "seeks power entirely for its own sake. It is not interested in the good of others; it is interested solely in power." The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party, who works for the Ministry of Truth (or Minitrue in Newspeak), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles, so that the historical record always supports the party line. The instructions that the workers receive portray the corrections as fixing misquotations and never as what they really are: forgeries and falsifications. A large part of the Ministry also actively destroys all documents that have not been edited and do not contain the revisions; in this way, no proof exists that the government is lying. Smith is a diligent and skillful worker but secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. The heroine of the novel, Julia, is based on Orwell's second wife, Sonia Orwell. As literary political fiction and dystopian science-fiction, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic novel in content, plot and style. Many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, telescreen, 2 + 2 = 5, and memory hole, have entered into common use since its publication in 1949. Nineteen Eighty-Four popularised the adjective Orwellian, which describes official deception, secret surveillance, and manipulation of recorded history by a totalitarian or authoritarian state. In 2005, the novel was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. It was awarded a place on both lists of Modern Library 100 Best Novels, reaching number 13 on the editor's list, and 6 on the readers' list. In 2003, the novel was listed at number 8 on the BBC's survey The Big Read. ............................................................. America, China, and the Retreat of Democracy in Southeast Asia: The Case of Cambodia

01:05:01
CAS Event Wednesday, April 18, 2018; 5 p.m. Hale 230 Lecture by Dr. Sophal Ear, Associate Professor, Diplomacy & World Affairs, Occidental College In January of 2017, in one of the first acts of his new administration, President Donald Trump made the decision to pull the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), signaling an end to US participation in multilateral trade agreements. Since then, Beijing has continued to exert greater influence in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Through initiatives like One Belt One Road (OBOR), China is increasingly capitalizing on American isolation as a means to advance its political interests. Using Cambodia as a case study, I examine how China has been able to simultaneously advance its political agenda in the Asia-Pacific region by politically needling an America on the wane. Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs bureaucrats allegedly see the world very much as zero-sum; America’s loss is China’s gain, and countries like Cambodia serve as proxies for China. China has already used its growing economic influence to encroach on existing hegemonic relationships, exerting increasing control over the South China Sea and Mekong River and through special economic zones and massive investment focused locally. With Cambodia as an example, I show that China has stepped beyond a purely economic partnership and has become a beacon for autocracy, resulting in democratic retreat.

The term was coined in 1944 by Raphael Lemkin. It is defined in Article 2 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG) of 1948 as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the groups conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."The preamble to the CPPCG states that "genocide is a crime under international law, contrary to the spirit and aims of the United Nations and condemned by the civilized world" and that "at all periods of history genocide has inflicted great losses on humanity."Determining what historical events constitute a genocide and which are merely criminal or inhuman behavior is not a clear-cut matter. In nearly every case where accusations of genocide have circulated, partisans of various sides have fiercely disputed the details and interpretation of the event, often to the point of depicting wildly different versions of the facts.

The term can sometimes refer to cities, towns, and neighbourhoods that are still populated, but significantly less so than in past years; for example, those affected by high levels of unemployment and dereliction. Some ghost towns, especially those that preserve period-specific architecture, have become tourist attractions. Some examples are Bannack, Calico, Centralia, Oatman, and South Pass City in the United States, Barkerville in Canada, Craco in Italy, Elizabeth Bay and Kolmanskop in Namibia, Pripyat in Ukraine, and Danushkodi in India. The town of Plymouth on the Caribbean island of Montserrat is a ghost town that is the de jure capital of Montserrat. It was rendered uninhabitable by volcanic ash from an eruption.

Mummy

49:06
A mummy is a deceased human or animal whose skin and organs have been preserved by either intentional or accidental exposure to chemicals, extreme cold, very low humidity, or lack of air, so that the recovered body does not decay further if kept in cool and dry conditions. Some authorities restrict the use of the term to bodies deliberately embalmed with chemicals, but the use of the word to cover accidentally desiccated bodies goes back to at least 1615 AD. (See the section Etymology and meaning.) Mummies of humans and other animals have been found on every continent, both as a result of natural preservation through unusual conditions, and as cultural artifacts. Over one million animal mummies have been found in Egypt, many of which are cats. (See: Animal mummy) This video is targeted to blind users. New Zealand

57:47
New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/; Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an Oceanian island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses -- that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu -- and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland. Polynesians settled New Zealand in 1250--1300 CE and developed a distinctive Māori culture. Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, was the first European to sight New Zealand in 1642 CE. In 1840, the British Crown and Māori signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, with English predominant. The country's economy was historically dominated by the export of wool, but exports of dairy products, meat, and wine, along with tourism, are more significant today. Throughout history and in many cultures, children have been involved in military campaigns. For example, thousands of children participated on all sides of the First World War and the Second World War. Children may be trained and used for combat, assigned to support roles such as porters or messengers, or used for tactical advantage as human shields or for political advantage in propaganda.Children are easy targets for military recruitment due to their greater susceptibility to influence compared to adults. Some are recruited by force while others choose to join up, often to escape poverty or because they expect military life to offer a rite of passage to maturity.Child recruits who survive armed conflict frequently suffer psychiatric illness, poor literacy and numeracy, and behavioural problems such as heightened aggression, leading to a high risk of poverty and unemployment in adulthood. Research in the UK and US has also found that the enlistment of adolescent children, even when they are not sent to war, is accompanied by a higher risk of attempted suicide, stress-related mental disorders, alcohol misuse, and violent behaviour.A number of treaties have sought to curb the participation of children in armed conflicts. According to Child Soldiers International these agreements have helped to reduce child recruitment, but the practice remains widespread and children continue to participate in hostilities around the world. Some economically powerful nations continue to rely on military recruits aged 16 or 17, and the use of younger children in armed conflict has increased in recent years as militant Islamist movements and the groups fighting them recruited children in large numbers.

SUMMARY ======= North America is a continent entirely within the Northern Hemisphere and almost all within the Western Hemisphere; it is also considered by some to be a northern subcontinent of the Americas. It is bordered to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the west and south by the Pacific Ocean, and to the southeast by South America and the Caribbean Sea. North America covers an area of about 24,709,000 square kilometers (9,540,000 square miles), about 16.5% of the earth's land area and about 4.8% of its total surface. North America is the third largest continent by area, following Asia and Africa, and the fourth by population after Asia, Africa, and Europe. In 2013, its population was estimated at nearly 579 million people in 23 independent states, or about 7.5% of the world's population, if nearby islands (most notably the Caribbean) are included. North America was reached by its first human populations during the last glacial period, via crossing the Bering land bridge approximately 40,000 to 17,000 years ago. The so-called Paleo-Indian period is taken to have lasted until about 10,000 years ago (the beginning of the Archaic or Meso-Indian period). The Classic stage spans roughly the 6th to 13th centuries. The Pre-Columbian era ended in 1492, and the transatlantic migrations—the arrival of European settlers during the Age of Discovery and the Early Modern period. Present-day cultural and ethnic patterns reflect different kinds of interactions between European colonists, indigenous peoples, African slaves and their descendants. European influences are strongest in the northern parts of the continent while indigenous and African influences are relatively stronger in the south. Because of the history of colonialism, most North Americans speak English, Spanish or French and societies and states commonly reflect Western traditions.

The word "shaman" probably originates from the Tungusic Evenki language of North Asia. According to ethnolinguist Juha Janhunen, "the word is attested in all of the Tungusic idioms" such as Negidal, Lamut, Udehe/Orochi, Nanai, Ilcha, Orok, Manchu and Ulcha, and "nothing seems to contradict the assumption that the meaning 'shaman' also derives from Proto-Tungusic" and may have roots that extend back in time at least two millennia. The term was introduced to the west after Russian forces conquered the shamanistic Khanate of Kazan in 1552. The term "shamanism" was first applied by Western anthropologists as outside observers of the ancient religion of the Turks and Mongols, as well as those of the neighbouring Tungusic and Samoyedic-speaking peoples. Upon observing more religious traditions across the world, some Western anthropologists began to also use the term in a very broad sense. The term was used to describe unrelated magico-religious practices found within the ethnic religions of other parts of Asia, Africa, Australasia and even completely unrelated parts of the Americas, as they believed these practices to be similar to one another.Mircea Eliade writes, "A first definition of this complex phenomenon, and perhaps the least hazardous, will be: shamanism = 'technique of religious ecstasy'." Shamanism encompasses the premise that shamans are intermediaries or messengers between the human world and the spirit worlds. Shamans are said to treat ailments/illness by mending the soul. Alleviating traumas affecting the soul/spirit restores the physical body of the individual to balance and wholeness. The shaman also enters supernatural realms or dimensions to obtain solutions to problems afflicting the community. Shamans may visit other worlds/dimensions to bring guidance to misguided souls and to ameliorate illnesses of the human soul caused by foreign elements. The shaman operates primarily within the spiritual world, which in turn affects the human world. The restoration of balance results in the elimination of the ailment.Beliefs and practices that have been categorised this way as "shamanic" have attracted the interest of scholars from a wide variety of disciplines, including anthropologists, archaeologists, historians, religious studies scholars, philosophers and psychologists. Hundreds of books and academic papers on the subject have been produced, with a peer-reviewed academic journal being devoted to the study of shamanism. In the 20th century, many Westerners involved in the counter-cultural movement have created modern magico-religious practices influenced by their ideas of indigenous religions from across the world, creating what has been termed neoshamanism or the neoshamanic movement. It has affected the development of many neopagan practices, as well as faced a backlash and accusations of cultural appropriation, exploitation and misrepresentation when outside observers have tried to represent cultures they do not belong to.
