On the other hand, cryptanalysis is the art of decrypting or obtaining plain text from hidden messages over an insecure channel. Today we’re going to talk about how to keep information secret, and this isn’t a new goal. From as early as Julius Caesar’s Caesar cipher to Mary, Queen of Scots, encrypted messages to kill Queen Elizabeth in 1587, theres has long been a need to encrypt and decrypt private correspondence. This proved especially critical during World War II as Allan Turing and his team at Bletchley Park attempted to decrypt messages from Nazi Enigma machines, and this need has only grown as more and more information sensitive tasks are completed on our computers. So today, we’re going to walk you through some common encryption techniques such as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange, and RSA which are employed to keep your information safe, private, and secure. Note: In October of 2017, researchers released a viable hack against WPA2, known as KRACK Attack, which uses AES to ensure secure communication between computers and network routers. The problem isn't with AES, which is provably secure, but with the communication protocol between router and computer. In order to set up secure communication, the computer and router have to agree through what's called a "handshake". If this handshake is interrupted in just the right way, an attacker can cause the handshake to fault to an insecure state and reveal critical information which makes the connection insecure. As is often the case with these situations, the problem is with an implementation, not the secure algorithm itself. But the landscape changed again in the 21st century, when researchers observed that the implementation of cryptographic algorithms can be vulnerable to physical attacks. This gave rise to Side Channel Analysis, a technique which exploits the information leakage of cryptographic devices.

Cryptography is not alone word or one word for all related information security science. Words like cryptanalysis, cipher and cryptology are always included in this science. Cryptography includes techniques such as microdots, merging words with images, and other ways to hide information in storage or transit. However, in today's computer-centric world, cryptography is most often associated with scrambling plaintext (ordinary text, sometimes referred to as clear text) into cipher text (unreadable text obtained after a process called encryption), then back again (known as decryption). Individuals who practice this field are known as cryptographers. There is also a word, Cryptosystem that you will see a lot in this video course. Procedures and protocols that are used in cryptography makes up a system that is known as cryptosystem. Cryptosystem are mostly referred as computer programs or protocols but I would like it to extend to a much wider plot. It also include human behavior as social engineering is still one of the fastest technique to compromise a system or application. Things like choosing typical password, logging off unused systems, protecting sensitive files also plays a vital role in cryptosystem. Although, it is considered that 1st use of modern cryptography was by Julius Caesar, who did not trust his messenger when communicating with his governors. But I think the need of encryption came in high demand after the invention of radio as one can tune into your frequency range and intercept your message. But if the transmission is encrypted then things get changed. In recent times, cryptography has turned into a battleground of some of the world's best mathematicians and computer scientists. The ability to securely store and transfer sensitive information has proved a critical factor in success in war and business. To understand more about cryptography, let’s call our friends Alice and Bob. Now Alice wants to transfer some information to Bob but wants to do it securely. Alice decided that instead of transferring information in clear text form, I’ll encrypt this text with some algorithm and key. Then I’ll pass this cipher text. Now bob should also have the key and decryption algorithm to read the information. The two major problems are secure transfer of key and knowledge about algorithm. Things like degree of complexity of algorithm and its randomness also plays a vital role in cryptography. This course is going to be a detailed overview about all these things.

Cryptography means ‘hidden’ ‘writing’ and its features: – Cryptography is synonymous with encryption, the conversion of readable information to non-readable (Ciphertext) format. Decryption is the reverse process. – Cryptography takes care of data confidentiality, integrity, authentication and non-repudiation. – Applications include e-commerce, payment cards, DRM etc. – Cryptography is a technique of transforming and transmitting confidential data in an encoded way so that only authorized and intended users can obtain or work on it. – Cryptanalysis is process of breaking the work of cryptography. – Cryptology is the study of cryptography and cryptanalysis both. In cryptography, a cipher or Code is an algorithm for performing encryption or decryption. Modern encryption methods can be divided by two criteria: – by type of key used – by type of input data Classical Ciphers: Ciphers written hard using simple substitutions of a letter code or a word. – 20th century, electro-mechanical machines were invented to do encryption and decryption using transposition, polyalphabetic substitution. – Secret communication requirement is there since age and methods vary as per need of the times. – Symmetric key algorithms (Private-key cryptography), where the same key is used for encryption and decryption. – Asymmetric key algorithms (Public-key cryptography), where two different keys are used for encryption and decryption. By type of input data – Block ciphers, which encrypt block of data of fixed size – Stream ciphers, which encrypt continuous streams of data Symmetric key algorithm – In symmetric key algorithms same key is used for encryption and decryption. (e.g., DES and AES) – The sender and receiver must have a shared key in advance exchanged secretly. – Symmetric-key cryptography refers to encryption methods in which both the sender and receiver share the same key. – Symmetric key ciphers are implemented as either block ciphers or stream ciphers. – A block cipher enciphers input in blocks of plaintext as opposed to individual characters, the input form used by a stream cipher. – Data Encryption Standard (DES) and the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) are block cipher designs. In asymmetric key algorithms two different keys are used for encryption and decryption. (e.g. RSA) There are two separate keys: – a public key is published and enables any sender to perform encryption – a private key is kept secret by the receiver and can be used to perform decryption. Asymmetric systems - RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) - ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) Symmetric systems - AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) - DES (Data Encryption Standard) Cryptographic hash functions are a third type of cryptographic algorithm. – They take a message of any length as input, and output a short, fixed length hash, which can be used in a digital signature. – MD5 is widely used hashing. – SHA series is more secure than MD5. SHA-2 improves SHA1 – 2012 - NIST announced that Keccak would be the new SHA-3 hash algorithm. – Cryptographic hash functions are used to verify the authenticity of data retrieved from a source.

When we say a key, it actually means a piece of string value which is fed to encyprtion and decryption algorithms along with the text for transformation. When the message reaches the destination, this system at the other end decrypts the cipher text into original message with the help of the key. This is called as Decryption System. The output of the Decryption System is the intended message. Depending on how the keys are shared, we can classify crytography as symmetric and asymmetric. If the keys used by both parties are same, then it is called symmetric key cryptography, or private key cryptography. The process of reverting cipher text to its original plaintext is called decryption A key is a value that works with a cryptographic algorithm to produce a specific cipher text. Keys are basically very, very, very big numbers. Key size is measured in bits In conventional cryptography, also called secret-key or symmetric-key encryption, the same key is used both for encryption and decryption. The figure below is an illustration of the conventional encryption process. Public key cryptography is an asymmetric scheme that uses a pair of keys: a public key, which encrypts data, and a corresponding private key, or secret key for decryption Each user has a key pair with him. The public key is published to the world while the private key is kept secret. The use of chaos or randomness in cryptography has long been sought after by entities wanting a new way to encrypt messages. However, because of the lack of thorough, provable security properties and low acceptable performance, chaotic cryptography has encountered setbacks. In order to use chaos theory efficiently in cryptography, the chaotic maps should be implemented such that the entropy generated by the map can produce required Confusion and diffusion. Properties in chaotic systems and cryptographic primitives share unique characteristics that allow for the chaotic systems to be applied to cryptography. If chaotic parameters, as well as cryptographic keys, can be mapped symmetrically or mapped to produce acceptable and functional outputs, it will make it next to impossible for an adversary to find the outputs without any knowledge of the initial values. Since chaotic maps in a real life scenario require a set of numbers that are limited, they may, in fact, have no real purpose in a cryptosystem if the chaotic behavior can be predicted. One of the most important issues for any cryptographic primitive is the security of the system. However, in numerous cases, chaos-based cryptography algorithms are proved unsecure. The main issue in many of the cryptanalyzed algorithms is the inadequacy of the chaotic maps implemented in the system. The concept of chaos cryptography or in the other words chaos-based cryptography can be divided into two major groups: the asymmetric and symmetric chaos-based cryptography. The majority of the symmetric chaos-based algorithms are based on the application of discrete chaotic maps in their process. Bourbakis and Alexopoulos in 1991 proposed supposedly the earliest fully intended digital image encryption scheme which was based on SCAN language. Later on, with the emergence of chaos-based cryptography hundreds of new image encryption algorithms, all with the aim of improving the security of digital images were proposed. However, there were three main aspects of the design of an image encryption that was usually modified in different algorithms (chaotic map, application of the map and structure of algorithm). The initial and perhaps most crucial point was the chaotic map applied in the design of the algorithms. The speed of the cryptosystem is always an important parameter in the evaluation of the efficiency of a cryptography algorithm, therefore, the designers were initially interested in using simple chaotic maps such as tent map, and the logistic map. However, in 2006 and 2007, the new image encryption algorithms based on more sophisticated chaotic maps proved that application of chaotic map with higher dimension could improve the quality and security of the cryptosystems. The unpredictable behavior of the chaotic maps can be used in the generation of random numbers. Some of the earliest chaos-based random number generators try to directly generate random numbers form the logistic map.

Application architects need to make informed choices to use cryptography well: + Alternative key architectures have their merits and drawbacks. PKIs, in particular, should be contrasted with symmetric key architectures such as Kerberos. + Network protocol characteristics are pivotal in ensuring distributed applications meet security requirements. Key strength choices impact on security guarantees offered, as do cryptographic algorithm modes. + While strong keys and wise use of cryptographic algorithms may thwart cryptanalytic attack, applications are insecure without prudent key management. In this context, key generation and key storage require particular attention. + The selection of crypto-libraries requires awareness of inherent library qualities and failures. Application developers are advised not to implement their own. This lecture was delivered by Bart Preneel at SecAppDev 2013 in Leuven, Belgium. Professor Bart Preneel of KU Leuven heads the COSIC (COmputer Security and Industrial Cryptography) research group. His main research area is information security with a focus on cryptographic algorithms and protocols as well as their applications to both computer and network security, and mobile communications. He teaches cryptology, network security and coding theory at the KU Leuven and was visiting professor at the Ruhr Universitaet Bochum (Germany), the T.U.Graz (Austria), the University of Bergen (Norway), and the Universiteit Gent (Belgium). In '93-'94 he was a research fellow at the University of California at Berkeley. He has taught intensive courses around the world. He undertakes industrial consulting (Mastercard International, S.W.I.F.T., Proton World International,...), and participates in the work of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC27/WG2. Professor Preneel is Vice President of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) and co-founder and chairman of LSEC vzw (Leuven Security Excellence Consortium).
