Before mine shafts had electricity, miners wore calcium carbide lamps on their helmets to light the darkness. Craig Beals from Beals Science finds a Carbide Miner's Lamp at his grandma's house that hasn't been lit since 1938, give or take a few years! He uses science, some carbide, and acetylene gas to get the miner's lantern working again and bring history back to life! Last month the UN warned about the potential impacts of climate change. Now scientists and officials are meeting in Berlin to finalise another report on what to do about it. They are expected to call for a major push for renewable energy like wind and solar and a move away from fossil fuels such as coal. This comes as many countries try to switch to low-carbon forms of power - among them Germany which is now the world leader in solar power but also remains the largest producer of one of the dirtiest forms of fuel. David Shukman visited a lignite coal mine south of Berlin to see the scale of the operation.

The EU has declared war on energy waste -- and on conventional light bulbs. It has been a symbol of the modern industrial era for 130 years. But it is inefficient, and is about to be extinguished. The German firm Paulmann and Dutch multinational Philips are just two of the manufacturers developing more energy-efficient lights. One problem is that the politicians want incandescent bulbs to be phased out more swiftly than industry can deliver alternatives, as our reporter Carmen Meyer discovered.

Despite Germany's energy turnaround, environmentally-damaging lignite, or brown coal, is still being strip mined here, including in the state of Brandenburg. Politicians have just approved additional projects, despite citizens' bitter protests. But miners, too, are taking to the streets, because they fear for their jobs.We visit southern Brandenburg to gauge the situation. This is clipped from the 1945 film -- The New Mine - an overview of the progressive facilities at a modern coal mine in Scotland, with an emphasis on the steps taken to ensure worker welfare there. 'From the original film description - A modern colliery in Scotland, situated in unspoilt country instead of an ugly mining town, has up-to-date machinery, the latest ventilation and safety devices, and new methods in mining practice. The surface buildings of this model colliery are built on symmetrical lines. - When The New Mine was made in 1945, there were around 1000 coal mines operating in the UK. Today, there are less than a dozen. Described in The New Mine as a "pit-head of the new world", Comrie Colliery in Fife operated from 1936 to 1986. In spite of the film's optimistic claim that the mine would "stand the test of time", and comments on the safety of its operations, the Comrie Colliery site is now derelict. Despite The New Mine's praise for the cutting-edge techniques employed at the mine, the disused site was recently described by Fife Council as the "largest area of post-industrial dereliction in West Fife". The land around the mine, clearly discernible from above, is reported to be heavily polluted, contaminated with cyanide, and the 40 metre high pile of coal waste (seen forming in the film) has purportedly been burning since the 1970s. At the time of construction, Comrie was the new showpiece pit of the Fife Coal Company. Important features included the use of forced-fan ventilation (unusual at the time), and of skip-winding for raising coal from the pit bottom. The skips were brought in from Germany, and one week before the outbreak of World War II, the German engineers responsible for their installation were called home with the job unfinished. Underground transport was fully mechanised, with locomotive haulage and belt conveyors. Comrie Mine was demolished during the latter part of 1989. For more on this mine, including descriptions of miners injuried and killed over the years, go to http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/mmartin/fifepits/starter/west/pits/c/pit-2.htm.

Made by The National Film Board 1948. Directed by Jack S Allan. Open cut mining in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, produces tonnes of low grade brown coal that is burnt, unprocessed, in the Yallourn Power Station, which in 1948, supplied 66% of Victoria's electricity. The high moisture content of unprocessed brown coal makes it a less efficient and higher carbon dioxide producing coal. Yallourn Power Station today produces 22% of Victoria's power supply and 8% of the national market.

A quarter of German electricity is still generated from brown coal. And while the German government promotes renewable energy, its fallback plan is still brown coal. It has even issued companies with new exploration permits. One of the big players in the market - Vattenfall, says it's now looking to sell off its German coal operations in favor of developing more renewable sources. In today's episode i went to an Abandoned Coal Mine at 3 AM . The coal mine is located in Germany and i was here before. The first time was at day time and it was already scary but now i've challenged myself to going back to this eerie abandoned Coal Mine at 3 am together with Liano. Whilst inside we heard a lot of creepy noises coming from everywhere. The whole time i had the feeling we weren't alone.. So Zeche P is part of an abandoned coal mine in the Ruhr area of western Germany. The first shaft was sunk in the 1930s, and mining operations were expanded to included a second shaft in the 1980s. This area of Germany was a prolific coal-producing region at end of the 20th Century. This mine was closed in the late 2000s, when the headstock and many of the buildings were demolished. Zeche P is the remains of the “waschkaue“, or washrooms, of the coal mine. The washroom area was divided into three sections that the workers would pass through at the start and end of each shift. At the end of the day, they would first enter the “Schwarzkaue” (black room), where they would remove their coal-covered work clothes. They would then enter the shower area. After this they would enter the “Weißkaue” (white room), where they would retrieve their street clothes and their belongings. Their personal clothes and belongings were stored in cages/baskets, called “kaue” in the white room area. Once the belongings were inside the cage, the worker would hoist their cage to the ceiling out of reach. The chain was locked in place in a numbered holster, which was then secured by a padlock. The miners clothes would be safe in this cage until the end of their shift. Nothing else of interest was seen in the rest of the site. The site of hundreds of cages, suspended at different heights in such a massive hall, was truly a surreal sight to behold. A gentle breeze caused some cages to move slightly, which made photography in this dark room quite frustrating. The bright light from the windows made these photographs quite a challenge from certain angles. 🎥 CHECK OUT PART 1 ⇩ https://youtu.be/RsaqrRfh7ys SUPPORT MY CHANNEL WITH A FEW DOLLARS ⇩ Subscribe TODAY: http://bit.ly/SubscribeToJefSteticsWorld DONATE to my Channel: https://www.paypal.me/JefSteticsWorld 🌍 VISIT my Official Website ⇩ https://www.realjefsteticsworld.com 🤟 Become a VIP fan for exclusive secret updates about upcoming events and much more ⇩ https://onlyfans.com/officialjefsteticsworld 🤟 Official Jefstetics World Crew Merch ⇩ http://bit.ly/JefSteticsWorldMerch 🖥️ CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA ⇩ https://www.facebook.com/OfficialJefSteticsWorld https://twitter.com/ItsJeffreyBrah https://www.instagram.com/jefsteticsworld https://www.snapchat.com/add/jeffrowzzz ✉️ For Professional Inquiries : [email protected] More About Jefstetics World ⇩ Hi i'm Jeffrey & welcome to my world of Creepy and the most craziest explorations of lost abandoned buildings. 2 times a week you will being part of the explorations that i'm doing at night or day of Haunted and Scary Abandoned Buildings. 🎮 Now Playing ⇩ 3 AM CHALLENGE At The Scariest ABANDONED COAL MINE In Germany *HEARD CREEPY NOISES* https://youtu.be/Ki84mG2CDig All videos are owned by JefStetics World. Welcome to this weeks video a very old vintage and rusty west German oil lantern or hurricane lamp restoration with a twist. As you can clearly see the lamp has seen better days, it is VERY rusty but appears to be still structurally sound which is surprising to say the least. First step in the restoration process is as usual the full tear down to assess the condition of each of the parts. The tear down didn't really present any surprises or real challenges the only job i was dubious about was removing the glass in case it was brittle but to my surprise its very tough glass! :). The next step in my process was to immerse all of the steel parts into a bath of rust removal solution which is BILT HAMBER DEOX C. This was left overnight to do its thing and the next day as if by magic im left with a bucket full of dirty water and perfectly clean bare steel parts :). All that was required after this stage was a quick grinding with the dremel and the brass wire wheel to sand off any imperfections that were left behind then it was onto a quick degreasing before masking up. After the lamp was hung in the booth it was coated with etch primer to provide a key for following coats of high build primer. Once the high build primer is fully cured it is wet flatted back with 800 wet and dry to remove any imperfections in the surface and provide a good even base for the base coat to adhere to. Once the lamp had been hung back in the booth degreased and tack ragged a final time i was ready to hit it with a base coat i had custom mixed to mimic dark war time green but with a modern metallic twist to it. I think you'll agree the colour really POPS!. After base coating it was coated with 3 heavy coats of scratch resistant clear then allowed to fully cure before handling. While the paint was curing i took a mad notion to make this a restoration with a twist so i chose to copper plate the handles catches and wick mechanism, once they were plated i gave them a rub with wire wool to scuff them up and give them a vintage used look. And personally i think they look fantastic! as well as stopping corrosion of the steel the copper layer will oxidise over time and give the lantern a changing appearance which im looking forward to. And before anyone criticises my plating method yes its very DIY and yes its very crude but it works for me and always delivers the results im after so please be nice! When the paint was cured and the parts were plated it was simply a case of reversing the tear down process and building it back up. I hope you'll agree that This old vintage rusty oil lamp has now been revived and is now a beautiful thing to behold! :) Unlike the other green lantern... you know what im talking about ;) If you like what you see and have any ideas for the channel please let me know in the comment section. The German parliament has decided to phase out nuclear power. And that means a notoriously dirty fuel is making a comeback: lignite, or brown coal. Brown coal is already Germany's leading source for electrical power, and the new energy developments promise to increase its importance. The phase-out of nuclear power is pushing producers like Vattenfall to expand their coal-fired power plants - such as the Boxberg plant in Saxony's Oberlausitz region.

With gas prices soaring, it sure would be nice if we could convince the patent holders of this technology to make use of it in some meaningful way. If Germany was able to run its immense war machine off this stuff almost 70 years ago, I'm sure it could make a difference today. This clip comes from the DVD "Complete History of WWII" ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AOV3O/sr=1-1/qid=1156635941/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-9084930-1992915?ie=UTF8&s=dvd )

KATOWICE--In this interview with The New American magazine, a press officer for the Silesian Freedom and Solidarity Center details how communist troops massacred coal miners for going on strike. The horror unfolded at the Wujek coal mine. Ironically, less then four decades later, communists at the UN COP24 "climate" summit in Poland were demanding that coal be kept in the ground to save humanity from alleged man-made global warming. The consequences of the nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima, Japan, were also felt in Europe. Germany is phasing out nuclear power - and coal is experiencing a comeback. But are there alternatives? Swedish power company Vattenfall wants to expand its coal-mining operations in eastern Germany. That would involve razing three villages. One pastor in the area says it is immoral to destroy three villages and 3,600 hectares of land in exchange for cheap electricity.

On its drive to phase out nuclear energy, Germany increased its reliance on brown coal which is a cheaper and dirtier alternative compared to black coal that emits more greenhouse gases than any other fossil fuel. CCTV America’s Jack Barton visited Germany where resurgence in coal use has led to a rise in the country's carbon emissions.
