TechKnow - Deep sea gold rush

23:43
Oceans cover 70 percent of the earth's surface, but only a fraction of the undersea world has been explored. On this episode of TechKnow, Phil Torres joins a team of scientists on a special expedition to explore and uncover the mysteries at the bottom of the ocean floor. "What we are doing is similar to astronauts and planetary scientists just trying to study life on another planet," says Beth Orcutt, a senior research scientist. The journey begins in Costa Rica aboard the R/V Atlantis, a research vessel operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. From there, Phil gets the chance to take a dive with Alvin, a deep-water submersible capable of taking explorers down to 6,000 metres (20,000 feet) under the sea. Commissioned in 1964, Alvin has a celebrated history, locating an unexploded hydrogen bomb off the coast of Spain and exploring the famous RMS Titanic in the 1980s. Alvin and its first female pilot, Cindy Van Dover, were the first to discover hydrothermal vents, which are underwater springs where plumes of black smoke and water pour out from underneath the earth's crust. The vents were inhabited by previously unknown organisms that thrived in the absence of sunlight. After 40 years of exploration, Alvin got a high-tech upgrade. The storied submersible is now outfitted with high-resolution cameras to provide a 245-degree viewing field and a robotic arm that scientists can use to pull samples of rock and ocean life to then study back on land. But scientists are not the only ones interested in the ocean. These days the new gold rush is not in the hills, it is in the deep sea. For thousands of years miners have been exploiting the earth in search of precious metals. As resources on dry land are depleted, now the search for new sources of metals and minerals is heading underwater. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's national ocean service estimates that there is more than $150tn in gold waiting to be mined from the floor of the world's oceans. "The industry is moving very, very fast. They have far more financial resources than the scientific community," says Cindy Van Dover, Alvin's first female pilot and Duke University Oceanography Professor. Seabed mining is still in the planning stages, but Nautilus Minerals, a Canadian mining company, says it has the technology and the contracts in place with the island nation of Papua New Guinea to start mining in its waters in about two years. What is the future of seabed mining? And what are the consequences of seabed mining for the marine ecosystems? Follow us: Website: http://inhabitants-tv.org/ Facebook: facebook.com/inhabitantstv/ YouTube: youtube.com/channel/UCt0fB6C18nwzRwdudiC8sGg instagram: inhabitants_tv #inhabitants Written by anthropologist Stefan Helmreich, What is Deep Sea Mining? Episode 2: Deep Frontiers is a brief history about knowledge of the deep sea and its resources. It highlights the ambiguity of this history, as depictions of the deep changed throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Today, this knowledge informs discussions about the commercialization of biological and geological resources, with the deep sea fast becoming a zone of international dispute, opening up a debate about sustainable practices at sea. What is Deep Sea Mining? is a five episode web series dedicated to the topic of deep sea mining, a new frontier of resource extraction at the bottom of the ocean, set to begin in the next few years. Deep sea mining will occur mainly in areas rich in polymetallic nodules, in seamounts, and in hydrothermal vents. Mining companies are already leasing areas in national and international waters in order to extract minerals and metals such as manganese, cobalt, gold, copper, iron, and other rare earth elements from the seabed. Main sites targeted for future exploration are the mid-atlantic ridge and the Clarion Clipperton Zone (Pacific ocean) in international waters, as well as the islands of Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, Japan, and the Portuguese Azores archipelago. Yet, potential impacts on deep sea ecosystems are yet to be assessed by the scientific community, and local communities are not being consulted. The prospects of this new, experimental form of mining are re-actualizing a colonial, frontier mentality and redefining extractivist economies for the twenty-first century. This web series addresses different issues related to this process, from resource politics to ocean governance by international bodies, prompting today’s shift towards a "blue economy" but also efforts to defend sustained ocean literacy when the deep ocean, its species, and resources remain largely unmapped and unstudied. Stefan Helmreich is Professor of Anthropology at MIT. He is the author of Alien Ocean: Anthropological Voyages in Microbial Seas, and, most recently, of Sounding the Limits of Life: Essays in the Anthropology of Biology and Beyond (Princeton University Press, 2016). His essays have appeared in Critical Inquiry, Representations, American Anthropologist, Cabinet, and The Wire. What is Deep Sea Mining? is developed in collaboration with Margarida Mendes, curator and activist from Lisbon, Portugal, and founding member of Oceano Livre environmental movement against deep sea mining. It was commissioned and funded by TBA21 - Academy and premiered at the 2018 New Museum Triennial: Songs for Sabotage. A New State of Water Reveals a Hidden Ocean in Earth’s Mantle

04:07
Diamonds from deep within the earth carry a new form of water ice, Ice-VII, that confirms there’s an ocean underneath us! Here’s what we know. This Massive Asteroid Is Headed for Earth…. What Now?- https://youtu.be/yL7EEXg2niU Read More: The Hunt for Earth’s Deep Hidden Oceans https://www.quantamagazine.org/the-hunt-for-earths-deep-hidden-oceans-20180711 “These mineral flecks — some too small to see even under a microscope — offer a peek into Earth’s otherwise unreachable interior. In 2014, researchers glimpsed something embedded in these minerals that, if not for its deep origins, would’ve been unremarkable: water.” Ice-VII inclusions in diamonds: Evidence for aqueous fluid in Earth’s deep mantle http://science.sciencemag.org/content/359/6380/1136 “Small inclusions in diamonds brought up from the mantle provide valuable clues to the mineralogy and chemistry of parts of Earth that we cannot otherwise sample. Tschauner et al.found inclusions of the high-pressure form of water called ice-VII in diamonds sourced from between 410 and 660 km depth, the part of the mantle known as the transition zone. The transition zone is a region where the stable minerals have high water storage capacity. “ The Earth’s Hidden Ocean https://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/17/science/the-earths-hidden-ocean.html “Dr. Jacobsen synthesizes deep-earth minerals by replicating the extreme pressures that exist hundreds of miles below the surface. Over the years when he has made a blue mineral called ringwoodite, which is ubiquitous in the transition zone, it has formed with water. But that was just lab work, Dr. Jacobsen said, adding, “We haven’t known whether it could happen down there.” ____________________ Elements is more than just a science show. Support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/melodysheep | Get the soundtrack: https://bit.ly/2HKl9fi | How's it all gonna end? This experience takes us on a journey to the end of time, trillions of years into the future, to discover what the fate of our planet and our universe may ultimately be. We start in 2019 and travel exponentially through time, witnessing the future of Earth, the death of the sun, the end of all stars, proton decay, zombie galaxies, possible future civilizations, exploding black holes, the effects of dark energy, alternate universes, the final fate of the cosmos - to name a few. This is a picture of the future as painted by modern science - a picture that will surely evolve over time as we dig for more clues to how our story will unfold. Much of the science is very recent - and new puzzle pieces are still waiting to be found. To me, this overhead view of time gives a profound perspective - that we are living inside the hot flash of the Big Bang, the perfect moment to soak in the sights and sounds of a universe in its glory days, before it all fades away. Although the end will eventually come, we have a practical infinity of time to play with if we play our cards right. The future may look bleak, but we have enormous potential as a species. What is Deep Sea Mining? Ep 3.: The Azores Case

08:24
Inhabitants is an online video for exploratory video and documentary reporting. Follow us: Website: inhabitants-tv.org/ Facebook: facebook.com/inhabitantstv/ YouTube: youtube.com/channel/UCt0fB6C18nwzRwdudiC8sGg ENG (see below for Portuguese) The third episode of the web series What is Deep Sea Mining? is set on the Azores archipelago, an autonomous region of Portugal located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Composed of nine volcanic islands that once thrived on the whaling industry, the Azores have since become a hot spot for research in marine biology due to its diverse ecosystems, as it is located above an active triple junction between the Eurasian, African, and North-American tectonic plates. In 2008, one year before Portugal submitted its proposal to extend its continental shelf to the United Nations, the Canadian mining company Nautilus Minerals Inc. presented a proposal for mineral prospection and exploration in six areas off the coast of the Azores. Despite the fact that deep sea mining continues to be under debate between different governmental bodies, no effort was done to inform the wider public or local citizens about such plans. For this episode we interviewed different specialists in marine biology based in the islands, among them José Nuno Gomes-Pereira, Teresa Cerqueira, Telmo Morato, and Gisela Dionísio, as well as member of the European Parliament Ricardo Serrão Santos, on the potential impacts of deep sea mining on local ecosystems and on the archipelago’s economical reality. What is Deep Sea Mining? is developed in collaboration with Margarida Mendes, curator and activist from Lisbon, Portugal, and founding member of Oceano Livre environmental movement against deep sea mining. What is Deep Sea Mining? is a web series commissioned by TBA21–Academy.  Acknowledgements: Aurora Ribeiro, Espaço Talassa, Gisela Dionísio, Gonçalo Carvalho, Gonçalo Tocha, Henrique Ramos, Joana Borges Coutinho, José Nuno Gomes-Pereira, Luis Rodrigues, Márcia Dutra, Museu da Horta, Museu do Pico, Naturalist, Norberto, Ricardo Serrão Santos, Serge Viallelle, Telmo Morato, Tomás Melo, Quinta do bom despacho, and everyone who helped this web series. What is Deep Sea Mining? é uma série desenvolvida em colaboração com Margarida Mendes, curadora e ativista de Lisboa, Portugal, e membro fundador do movimento ambientalista contra a mineração em mar profundo, Oceano Livre. The deep ocean is the final frontier on planet Earth

14:49
Watch the latest in the Ocean series - This is the most over-fished sea in the world: https://youtu.be/oaW2rqJjXvs The ocean covers 70% of our planet. The deep-sea floor is a realm that is largely unexplored, but cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to go deeper than ever before. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Beneath the waves is a mysterious world that takes up to 95% of Earth's living space. Only three people have ever reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean. The deep is a world without sunlight, of freezing temperatures, and immense pressure. It's remained largely unexplored until now. Cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to explore deeper than ever before. They are opening up a whole new world of potential benefits to humanity. The risks are great, but the rewards could be greater. From a vast wealth of resources to clues about the origins of life, the race is on to the final frontier The Okeanos Explorer, the American government state-of-the-art vessel, designed for every type of deep ocean exploration from discovering new species to investigating shipwrecks. On board, engineers and scientists come together to answer questions about the origins of life and human history. Today the Okeanos is on a mission to investigate the wreck of a World War one submarine. Engineer Bobby Moore is part of a team who has developed the technology for this type of mission. The “deep discover”, a remote operating vehicle is equipped with 20 powerful LED lights and designed to withstand the huge pressure four miles down. Equivalent to 50 jumbo jets stacked on top of a person While the crew of the Okeanos send robots to investigate the deep, some of their fellow scientists prefer a more hands-on approach. Doctor Greg stone is a world leading marine biologist with over 8,000 hours under the sea. He has been exploring the abyss in person for 30 years. The technology opening up the deep is also opening up opportunity. Not just to witness the diversity of life but to glimpse vast amounts of rare mineral resources. Some of the world's most valuable metals can be found deep under the waves. A discovery that has begun to pique the interest of the global mining industry. The boldest of mining companies are heading to the deep drawn by the allure of a new Gold Rush. But to exploit it they're also beating a path to another strange new world. In an industrial estate in the north of England, SMD is one of the world's leading manufacturers of remote underwater equipment. The industrial technology the company has developed has made mining possible several kilometers beneath the ocean surface. With an estimated 150 trillion dollars’ worth of gold alone, deep-sea mining has the potential to transform the global economy. With so much still to discover, mining in the deep ocean could have unknowable impact. It's not just life today that may need protecting; reaching the deep ocean might just allow researchers to answer some truly fundamental questions. Hydrothermal vents, hot springs on the ocean floor, are cracks in the Earth's crust. Some claim they could help scientists glimpse the origins of life itself. We might still be years away from unlocking the mysteries of the deep. Even with the latest technology, this kind of exploration is always challenging. As the crew of the Okeanos comes to terms with a scale of the challenge and the opportunity that lies beneath, what they and others discover could transform humanity's understanding of how to protect the ocean. It's the most hostile environment on earth, but the keys to our future may lie in the deep. This webseries addresses different issues related to this process, from resource politics to ocean governance by international bodies, prompting today’s shift towards a "blue economy" but also efforts to defend sustained ocean literacy when the deep ocean, its species, and resources remain largely unmapped and unstudied. Episode 1: Tools for Ocean Literacy is a cartographical survey of technologies that have contributed to ocean literacy and seabed mapping. Structured around a single shot along a vertical axis, the episode inquires about deep sea mining and the types of geologic formations where it is set to occur, particularly hydrothermal vents. Understanding the process of deep sea mining demands not only a temporal investigation – its main dates, legal, and corporate landmarks, and scientific breakthroughs – but also a spatial axis connecting the seafloor to outer space cartographic technologies. After all, we know less about the ocean depths than about the universe beyond this blue planet. ★ DO YOU WANT TO GET YOUR STORY ANIMATED? SEND IT TO [email protected] IT WILL BE GIVEN A VOICE OVER BY A PROFESSIONAL ACTOR AND AN ANIMATOR WILL MAKE A VIDEO OUT OF IT! ★ Subscribe ACTUALLY HAPPENED https://bit.ly/2J5HP7j Hey guys! I'm Dylan, and I'm 13. For as long as I can remember, I've lived with my mother, and my father was taken away even before I went to school. I thought everything would change when my dad finally got out of prison. Mom and I went to the station to meet my dad. The train arrived and people started to get off. As I was trying to guess which of them was my father, a big, tall man came over, leaned toward me, and said: “Hey, Dylan, I already forgot what you look like, son,” and hugged me tightly. He kissed my mom and we went to the car. The whole way, I couldn't stop looking at him. He looked exactly like I'd imagined: a big and strong dad - who would be an example for me and will be able to teach me everything. Good days were finally here. We walked, talked, had fun, and made up for lost time. I showed him photos, told him about school and friends. He listened enthusiastically and asked me about everything. I was so happy that I now had my father back! Dad started looking for a job, and went on interviews pretty often. But every time he'd come back home sad - he kept getting turned down because of his criminal record. I heard how angry he was after another rejection: “I redeemed myself, I have the right to live a normal life!” Mom was also upset because she had to earn money for all of us. Soon, my Dad gave up his search and this upset my mother very much. I'd sometimes overhear them during a fight, but in front of me they pretended that everything was fine. The situation in the house was getting tense. To cheer me up, my dad often took me to a cafe or to the movies and gave me pocket money. Once I asked him: "Dad, if you're having problems with finding a job, then how can you afford these things?" He smiled at me and said, "Dylan, dear, I will always find a way to make you happy." When he said these words I felt so warm and comfortable. I instantly forgot about all our problems and believed that everything would be fine. But nothing changed no matter how hard I tried to believe that it would and my mom and dad continued to argue. One night I wanted to go down to the kitchen to get some water, and I noticed that the light was already on. Downstairs, I saw my dad whispering with an unfamiliar man. This stranger had huge, strong hands. He inspired fear with just one look. He noticed me and smiled: "Wow! Is this your Dylan? Why don`t we take this fighter with us? He's just small enough, he could come in handy," and laughed terribly. Dad pulled him up: "Shhh!" He sent me to my room: "Go to bed, Dylan, you have to get up and go to school soon." I fell asleep trying to figure out who this stranger was, and what he was doing at our home at night. In the morning we had breakfast as usual, and the curiosity was eating me up. So I asked my Dad: "Who were with you last night, he seemed scary to me." Both of my parents looked at me, and there was an awkward pause. “You must have dreamed that, son,” my father began to say. “Dylan, go to your room,” interrupted my mother. She said it very harshly. I immediately knew what would happen next, and silently left the kitchen. Yep, they began to fight again. But this time, mom was just mad. She screamed loudly, I even heard her say: “How dare you to bring them into our house?” “Do not involve us in your business!” I did not understand what kind of “business” my father had, or why my mother was so angry. But at that moment I felt sorry for my father. I even felt guilty for provoking another fight because of my curiosity. I decided to help my father find a job. My friend's dad is involved in the construction business, and I thought he may be able to help us. After school, I went to my friend`s home to meet his father. He turned to be very friendly and said that he always needs good workers. He gave me a phone number and said to have my dad call him. I was so happy on my way home, because once my father finds work, my parents will finally stop fighting. My father was at home when I got there. “Hi dad, I heard something from a friend of mine… His dad is looking for workers at his construction company, I thought maybe you might like to give him a call. The work is hard, but honest.” On the word “honest,” Dad gave me an irritated look and replied: “Great, son, thanks. I will definitely call him,” and put the piece of paper with the phone number in his pocket. It was then that I realized that he didn’t want to work, and this was the only reason he couldn’t find a job earlier. I began to suspect that he only wanted to deal with his “business” and I was so afraid it would end badly. Music by Epidemic Sound: https://www.epidemicsound.com #actuallyhappened

Breaking the Surface - The Future of Deep Sea Mining in the Pacific

10:37
The world’s first ever deep sea mining operation is scheduled to begin offshore from the Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea in early 2018. In this short film we explore how the two Pacific Island nations of Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu are working together with their communities to manage the future opportunities and impacts associated with this emerging industry. While deep sea minerals could provide much needed revenue for several Pacific Island nations, questions remain about the impacts of mining on the marine environment and the many communities that depend on it for their livelihoods.

Stalking the deep with NATO’s mine hunters

01:51
Sea mines are devastating weapons. Cheap to produce and relatively easy to field, they can make shipping lanes and straits impassable to military and civilian maritime traffic. Even the threat of sea mines can bring economies to a standstill. To address the threat of sea mines, the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Groups (SNMCMGs) patrol the Alliance’s waters 365 days a year. In this piece, the commander of SNMCMG2, which is currently charged with securing the Mediterranean Sea region, explains how NATO counters the danger of sea mines, and also how the flotilla provides a humanitarian service by neutralising unexploded ordnance from conflicts past. The four Standing Maritime Groups are multinational, integrated maritime forces made up of vessels from allied countries. These vessels are under continuous NATO command to perform a wide range of tasks ranging from deterrent presence and situational awareness to exercises and the conduct of operational missions. These groups provide NATO with an immediate operational response capability both in peacetime and in crisis. These four groups comprise the core of the maritime component of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), providing timely maritime support to NATO operations in a contingency. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

The Largest Oil Rig in The World

19:43
Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well. A gold rush in Peru's Tambopata province transformed the Amazonian wilderness into a desert pocked with dead trees and toxic pools. Security forces came and went; illegal miners scattered and returned. Then Peru announced a new approach, to stay. Originally from the German city of Osnabrück, he is now a high-flying frequent traveller bringing his music to loyal followers across the globe and the epitome of a ‘pop phenomenon’: It’s been only four years since Robin Schulz first topped the worldwide singles charts with his acclaimed remix of “Waves (feat. Mr. Probz)” and landed his breakthrough global uber-hit “Prayer in C (feat. Lilly Wood & The Prick)”; practically an eternity in the 30-year-old artist’s fast-paced dance music cosmos! Building on his unique blend of house, electro and pop, the Osnabrück DJ and producer has meanwhile established himself as Germany’s most successful music export of the past two decades in record-breaking time, while his sure-fire megahits have proven to work crowds into a frenzy time and time again. With countless # 1 in over 20 countries, over 250 Gold and Platinum certifications as well as billions of streams and views to his name, the four-time German ECHO award-winner bares it all on his third studio album “Uncovered”! Robin Schulz now rings in the post-“Uncovered” era: A good year after releasing his successful last album, the German DJ and producer unleashes his brand-new single “Speechless” on November 16, featuring up-and-coming Finnish artist Erika Sirola on vocal duties. With its atmospheric production, Robin’s new track will arrest you from the get-go: “I remember how it all started / Feeling warm, though the summer was over / And our little lives they felt so big then“, Erika Sirola tells the story of a sizzling encounter that has all the ingredients for a big love story: “If you love me / Then say you love me / That you are mine", she sings, with jubilant synths and electrifying beats taking over in the chorus. With so many emotions involved, it’s hardly surprising one is left “Speechless”! #RobinSchulz #MusicVideo #Speechless #ErikaSirola #India

SEND IT TO [email protected] IT WILL BE GIVEN A VOICE OVER BY A PROFESSIONAL ACTOR AND AN ANIMATOR WILL MAKE A VIDEO OUT OF IT! ★ Subscribe ACTUALLY HAPPENED https://bit.ly/2J5HP7j Hey everyone! My name’s Janise. You know, I’ve recently had a chance to start my life over again, and it has become the weirdest period of my life so far, but I regret nothing. Well, almost nothing. My family had to move to another town because of my dad’s new job and I, accordingly, switched to another totally unfamiliar school. I was pretty sure that I’d have some trouble blending in and it made me really nervous. On my first day there I was so distracted and lost that didn’t even see a guy standing right in front of me. So I kinda ran smack into him and fell to the ground. This made everybody around start laughing and giggling, and I felt, like, totally embarrassed. He helped me to stand up and made a joke that this was the weirdest way a girl has ever tried to find out what his name was. I cracked a half smile and got out of there as fast as I could, feeling how my face was already starting to turn bright red. But I heard him shouting his name – it was J.J. – and I found myself realizing just how handsome he was. Later that day when I was already in the school cafeteria I saw him again. But this time he wasn’t surrounded by a bunch of other people. It was the opposite actually, he was sitting alone at a lunch table reading something. I decided to go up to him and get acquainted, since, so far, he was the only person at this new place that I'd talked to. But when I actually got up closer to him and asked whether the seat next to him was taken or not, he looked at me as if we’d never met before. I felt offended inside, I mean, I know that I was new to that school but was I really that invisible!? I said that I was sorry for not telling him my name earlier, but it was Janise, by the way. And he said, “Good for you,” still keeping his eyes glued to the book. His manners in that moment had me really confused. I couldn’t figure out what else I should say or whether I should've said anything at all. So I just grabbed my tray and walked away, feeling sort of mad and a little humiliated. Who was he to talk to me like that? Strangely enough, I couldn’t stop thinking about him for the rest of the day. The next couple of days at school were pretty intense and I hadn’t seen J.J. at all. But I had started to chat with some other girls from my class and it was starting to look almost like the beginning of a friendship, I thought. Then, on Thursday when these girls and I were having lunch, I saw him again. He was probably saying something funny, because everybody around us was in tears laughing. Maybe he was really strange, I thought, acting like a clown and then like a distant mysterious guy at the same time. Was it a bipolar disorder or something? Anyway, he still looked very attractive to me. Later that day when I had already packed up to go home, I heard a car horn and somebody shouting. I turned around and saw J.J. He drove up to me and said he insisted on driving me home. I hesitated for a couple of seconds, but when I saw his smile I just gave up. He talked the entire way, telling me some school related stories about the other students and teachers and staff. I decided not to say anything about his strange behavior in the cafeteria a few days earlier. You know, everything already seemed to be perfect and I felt like I was falling for him. The next day it was Friday and I was really looking forward to seeing J.J. at school again, but unfortunately it was another busy day so I just couldn’t pause long enough to make it happen. But a big rugby game was scheduled for that evening after classes, and the girls and I decided to go and see it. Actually, the whole school was going because our team was playing against their biggest rival, as they told me. So I thought he’d also definitely be there. When everything had already started, I finally saw him a few rows higher, but when I was about to wave at him I saw a girl next to him. And suddenly she hugged him. I was devastated. I mean, why would he drive me home the day before if he already had a girlfriend? If he was a womanizer, for sure I was not OK with that. Deep Sea Ocean Mining - HUGHES GLOMAR EXPLORER Project Azorian 21050

14:30
Support Our Channel : https://www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm This historic film shows techniques used to conduct deep ocean mining of the sea floor, which were pioneered in the 1960s. The potential for this type of mining (particularly of manganese nodules) was never fully realized. Ironically, the program did end up providing the cover for the USNS Hughes Glomar Explorer (T-AG-193), a deep-sea drillship platform built for the United States Central Intelligence Agency Special Activities Division secret operation Project Azorian to recover the sunken Soviet submarine K-129, lost in April 1968. Hughes Glomar Explorer (HGE), as the ship was called at the time, was built between 1973 and 1974, by Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. for more than US$350 million at the direction of Howard Hughes for use by his company, Global Marine Development Inc.[4] This is equivalent to $1.67 billion in present-day terms.[5] She set sail on 20 June 1974. Hughes told the media that the ship's purpose was to extract manganese nodules from the ocean floor. This marine geology cover story became surprisingly influential, spurring many others to examine the idea. But in sworn testimony in United States district court proceedings and in appearances before government agencies, Global Marine executives and others associated with Hughes Glomar Explorer project unanimously maintained that the ship could not be used in any economically viable ocean mineral operation. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD. For more information visit http://www.PeriscopeFilm.com

Fracking explained: opportunity or danger

05:04
Fracking explained in five minutes. Fracking is a controversial topic. On the one side the gas drilling companies, on the other citizen opposed to this drilling method. Politicians are also divided on the matter. We try to take a neutral look on fracking. It is relevant for all of us, because of high prices for energy and the danger for our drinking water. This video focuses mostly on the debate currently ongoing in europe. In a lot of european countries there is a public outcry against fracking, espacially in germany. But the facts in this video are relevant to all of us. Short videos, explaining things. For example Evolution, the Universe, Stock Market or controversial topics like Fracking. Because we love science. We would love to interact more with you, our viewers to figure out what topics you want to see. It uses an incredible amount of resources, emits toxic pollutants into the air, and pumps the ground full of formaldehyde, which is known to cause cancer. It's also prohibitively expensive. The average cost of a modern funeral costs between $10,000 to $12,000. There are a number of greener options available though. Cremation uses less resources and requires less space than a traditional burial, but isn't perfect. There are more experimental methods on the horizon such as promession and alkaline hydrolysis. No matter which method we choose, it's clear that we need to reform how we bury the dead. Also be sure to read Mark Harris's excellent book about green burials http://www.gravematters.us
