What Causes Horizontal & vertical Ridges in Finger and Toenails Ridges in fingernails Vertical ridges sometimes appear along the length of the fingernails. Sometimes marks, discoloration or pits or grooves on a fingernail, such as those that run from side to side (known as Beau's lines), can be an indication of a nail injury or a health problem. However, in the case of vertical ridges, there is normally no reason to be concerned. These ridges look and feel like raised lines, and they run from the cuticle at the base of the fingernail to the tip. These ridges are not usually a sign of injury or a health problem but are a harmless result of ageing. They often become more prominent or numerous as you get older. However, if the vertical ridges are accompanied by brittle nails, with jagged edges or splitting, you may have a condition known as onychorrhexis, which may be linked to a skin-related medical condition such as lichen planus, a type of non-infectious skin rash, or certain other health conditions such as anaemia or an underactive thyroid gland. Also, if the ridges run horizontally from side to side, they may indicate a health problem. So you should seek medical advice

Did you know that your fingernails can provide clues to your overall health? Healthy nails grow, on average 3.5 millimeters a month, but this is influenced by your nutritional status, medications, trauma, chronic disease, and the aging process itself. If you notice any significant changes in your nails, including swelling, discolorations, or changes in shape or thickness, see a dermatologist right away. It could be nothing, or it could be due to an underlying condition. Below are the nail symptoms you might experience in your lifetime and what they mean for your health. White Lines Across Nails Also dubbed "Muehrcke's lines," these double white lines run horizontally across the nails, and are typically most clearly seen on the index, middle, and ring fingers. Commonly, these lines can indicate low levels of protein in the blood, which can be caused by liver disease or malnutrition, or during periods of stress, especially ones that affect your metabolism. Dark Stripes Running Down Nails In many cases, these dark, vertical stripes across your nails are harmless. However, there is a chance that they could be a sign of subungual melanoma, an extremely ferocious form of cancer that occurs on the toes or fingers. Red Or Brown Streaks Underneath Nails Also called splinter hemorrhage, these thin, reddish brown streaks underneath the nails are primarily tiny, damaged blood vessels. They can indicate wider, more severe causes that have to do with inflammation or swelling, including medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Discolored Nails Discolored nails can indicate various things, including signs of an infection, a nutritional deficiency, and a problem with one of your organs. Yellowish nail points to a fungal nail infection, or even psoriasis. Brown nails can indicate a thyroid disease or malnutrition. White nails can point to an iron deficiency. Bluish-gray tint can mean that your body might not be getting enough oxygen. It could also point to an issue with your lungs or heart. Brittle, Crumbly Nails Dry, brittle nails that frequently split or crack have been linked to things like thyroid disease and fungal infections. They can also indicate lichen planus, a condition that results in itchy rashes on the skin or around the mouth. Thickened Nails Among many other possible causes, thickened nails can form due to reactive arthritis (a really painful kind of inflammatory arthritis) and lung diseases. Another possible explanation is poor circulation. Medical conditions, like diabetes, can slow down the blood flow through the fingers and toes, and affect the quality of the skin. Spoon-Shaped Nails Spoon-shaped fingernails curve inward, and look like they are "scooping" outward. They can indicate a condition known as koilonychia, a disease that can be an indicator of hypochromic anemia, which leaves the red blood cells paler than normal. In addition, these nails can be a sign of hemochromatosis, a liver condition that is caused by a surplus of iron. They can also be a sign of heart disease or hypothyroidism. Pitting Or Denting In Nails Medical conditions such as psoriasis and reactive arthritis are likely be the reason that you're seeing little dents in your nails. Other possibilities include eczema and alopecia areata, a genetic disease that results in spot baldness. Grooves In Nails Also dubbed "Beau's lines," these horizontal grooves are ridges and indentations in the nails. There are several causes, including malfunctions during cell division, infections in the nail fold, or finger injuries. Nail Clubbing Also known as drumstick fingers and watch-glass nails, clubbed nails occur when the nails curve around the fingertips. This could be totally harmless — there might be an increased blood flow to the fingertips, and this could even be a genetic occurrence. Clubbed nails could also indicate lung and liver disease, heart disease, and inflammatory bowel disease, according to Hills.

This issue is quite common and is often too difficult to treat. However, there are several effective natural ways to soothe the pain caused by it. Remember not to cut or trim the nail, and it is best to always consult your doctor before you try anything on your own. The following five methods are extremely effective and you will soon feel great relief: Tea Tree Oil This oil is a potent natural disinfectant. All you need to do is to apply a few drops of it on the affected Apple Cider Vinegar Wash Vinegar is an effective method in the case of an ingrown toenail. You should simply dilute a quarter cup of it in some warm water, and soak your feet in it to relieve the pain and discomfort. Also it can prevent an infection if you apply it directly on the wound, as its potent antibacterial properties clean the area. Yet, it cannot fight an existing bacterial infection. Warm Bath With Epsom Salt Epsom salts alleviate irritations, soften nails, and disinfect the foot from bacteria. Just soak the foot in the lukewarm water with these salts for 20 minutes. Antibiotic Ointment It is of high importance to keep the feet clean, as the affected area is vulnerable and core. The feet come in contact with a lot of germs, so you should apply antibiotic ointment regularly, and wrap it with a bandage to keep the toe sterile. Floss or a Cotton Ball You can use a cotton ball or flow to relieve the pressure between the nail and the painful toe. Lift the nail with tweezers (or dental floss wrapped around the nail) to carefully place a sterile cotton ball underneath, and ensure the nail is comfortable above it. There are various causes due to which people get loss of hair, bitter nails, dry skin. This has to do with a deficiency of trace minerals. Trace minerals are required to make the enzymes work in the body and are needed in very little quantities. Trace minerals are needed by our body for getting proteins (from enzymes) which is essential for nails growth, hair care and skin care. Plant based trace minerals are best for skin, nails and hair treatment. While there are several potential causes of black toenails, many are easy to treat or may clear up on their own. In this article, we look at six potential causes of a black toenail, in addition to treatment options and tips for prevention. Six causes of a black toenail The cause of a black toenail may be benign or quite serious. It is important for a person who develops a black toenail to understand some of the potential causes. 1. Repetitive trauma When a person wears poorly-fitting shoes, they may be at risk of developing black toenails due to repetitive trauma. Long-term pressure on the toes from poorly-fitting shoes can cause a range of problems, from small blisters to bloody blisters under the nail. In mild cases, the black toenail will grow out naturally over time without treatment. 2. Blunt force In some cases, the trauma may be a one-time blunt-force injury, for example, if a person drops a heavy object on their foot or toes. When this happens, blood vessels in the nail bed break, causing blood to pool there. The injured toe will start to hurt and pool blood beneath the skin almost immediately. The buildup of blood will cause the toe to feel painful and swollen. A doctor can treat this condition by draining the blood with a pinprick. 3. Fungal infections Fungal infections are another common problem that can cause black toenails to form. Typically, a fungal infection causes a white or yellowish discoloration. However, debris can build up near the infection, causing the nail to appear black. Toenails are particularly susceptible to fungal infections, as socks and shoes can provide a warm and moist breeding ground for a fungus to become established. 4. Melanoma In rare cases, a black toenail may be caused by melanoma. Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer. Melanoma causes the skin to develop one or more patches of dark, irregular-looking skin. In some cases, the patch of darkening skin grows beneath the nail bed. Melanoma develops slowly, and without other symptoms, so it is often not noticed in the early stages, especially if it originates under the toenail. 5. Pigmentation changes People's skin tones can naturally change over time. For people with darker skin, a dark patch may develop beneath the toenails. Pigmentation changes are usually uniform, so if it affects a toe on one foot, it will usually affect the matching toe on the other foot. The fingernails may develop darker patches beneath them as well. 6. Underlying conditions There are a few medical conditions that may cause black toenails, including: • diabetes • kidney disease • heart disease • anemia In most cases, controlling the underlying condition will help the nail to regain its original color. Treatment Treatment for black toenails will vary depending on the cause. In cases of blunt force injury, a doctor may make a small hole in the nail using a needle. This hole will allow the blood to drain and alleviate a lot of the pressure that has built up over time. If a person has a repetitive injury, such as from wearing poorly-fitting shoes, it is likely a doctor will recommend resting the foot and switching shoes. A person may be able to treat a fungal infection at home. Over-the-counter creams and ointments can be enough to kill the fungus and allow the nail to heal. However, if the infection does not go away after a few days, a person should consult a doctor. Don't forget to our channel. https://goo.gl/FncNar

8 Fingernail Problems Not To Ignore http://www.Ameerrosic.com Pale Nails Very pale nails can sometimes be a sign of serious illness, such as: Anemia Congestive heart failure Liver disease Malnutrition White Nails If the nails are mostly white with darker rims, this can indicate liver problems, such as hepatitis. In this image, you can see the fingers are also jaundiced, another sign of liver trouble. Yellow Nails One of the most common causes of yellow nails is a fungal infection. As the infection worsens, the nail bed may retract, and nails may thicken and crumble. In rare cases, yellow nails can indicate a more serious condition such as severe thyroid disease, lung disease, diabetes or psoriasis. Bluish Nails Nails with a bluish tint can mean the body isn't getting enough oxygen. This could indicate an infection in the lungs, such as pneumonia. Some heart problems can be associated with bluish nails. Rippled Nails If the nail surface is rippled or pitted, this may be an early sign of psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis. Discoloration of the nail is common; the skin under the nail can seem reddish-brown. Cracked or Split Nails Dry, brittle nails that frequently crack or split have been linked to thyroid disease. Cracking or splitting combined with a yellowish hue is more likely due to a fungal infection. Puffy Nail Fold If the skin around the nail appears red and puffy, this is known as inflammation of the nail fold. It may be the result of lupus or another connective tissue disorder. Infection can also cause redness and inflammation of the nail fold. Dark Lines Beneath the Nail Dark lines beneath the nail should be investigated as soon as possible. They are sometimes caused by melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

A natural and easy way to treat Vertical Lines on the Nails ( Nail Ridges ). I made this video in Hindi, mainly for patients from Mumbai-India. A vertical dark line, we call it as longitudinal melanonychia. A longitudinal melanonychia is very common in dark skinned people and doesn't indicate that you have melanoma. In fair skinned people, I don't mean Indians, I mean Caucasians and Europeans, and you have a longitudinal black line on your nail, then you do have to be concerned about melanoma. The characters of longitudinal line due to melanoma are slightly different from other causes. Other causes are common congenital cause like people who have moles in other parts of their body. Moles can even occur on the nail matrix and when the nail grows, it leads to longitudinal lines along the nail. So it is nothing but a mole in most of the people. If somebody in your family had cancer, then you can get a biopsy done from the nail matrix to rule out melanoma. In a biopsy, the pathologist rules out if there are any cancerous cells in that sample. If you have normal nevus cells or mole cells, then you don't have to be worried.

Having foot fungus is a common condition caused by microscopic organisms that grow in warm, moist areas. If a person walks in a warm place, such as dressing rooms, showers or pools, organisms can invade your nails and cause an infection. It can look very insightly. It Causes thck nails and at some point they lose color and start to break. The condition is unsightly, and can be painful in severe cases. Although most cases be treated by a doctor, there are home cures, such as Vicks VapoRub, which have shown big progress. Today we revisit a study that looked at why Vicks VapoRub or similar products can be so effective at treating it, even where traditional treatments fail. The study isolated an ingredient called thymol, which is naturally found in the herb thyme. Treatment Although toenails fungi are usually treated with oral medication prescribed by a doctor, some people treat them with Vicks VapoRub. There is evidence proving that Vicks VapoRub can cure fungal toenails in some people. This is largely due to its ingredients, including menthol, camphor and eucalyptus oil. These ingredients may have antifungal properties that inhibit the growth of the fungus in the toenails and allow it to grow a new and healthy one. The ointment should be applied to the affected nails every day. Research Researchers at the University of Michigan found that daily use of Vicks VapoRub cured fungal toenails of 32 people from a total of 85 participants. It took five to 16 months to completely eliminate the infection, which is comparable with other treatments for fungal toenails. Benefits Vicks VapoRub has no side effects, which can make it a good choice for people who have problems with oral medications. Oral antifungal medications can cause skin irritation in some patients and can also cause liver damage. Patients with congestive heart failure or liver disease may be unable to take an oral treatment, so Vick VapoRub can be a good alternative for them. Warning Vicks VapoRub is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration to be used as a cure for fungus toenails. The company does not recommend using it to treat nail fungus. How to apply vicks vapor rub on fungal infections To treat toenail fungus with Vicks VapoRub, clean and trim your toenails. Wash them well and make sure they are completely dry. Coat the toenail with the Vicks, and be sure to get the gel deep into the sides of the nail and as far underneath as possible. If you have any cracks in your nail, rub deeply into them. Once the nail is covered, then wrap a light gauze bandage or adhesive bandage around the nail to protect the Vicks from rubbing off on to socks or something else. Leave it on and let the gel absorb into the nail. Repeat daily. The time it takes to notice results can be anywhere from 10 days to six weeks, depending upon how deep your fungus is. ===

White patches or lines on your nails are usually caused by air bubbles or minor injuries under the nail. However, they can also be a sign of serious medical conditions. White patches on nails are called leukonychia, and are caused by numerous factors. They can be inherited, but they can also be caused by warts, fungus, eczema or psoriasis that affect the nails. These white patches can also be one of the seven signs of sarcoidosis, a condition that affects the skin, lungs and other body organs. If the nails have white specks on them, it is an indication of a condition known as Plummer nail or a sign of hypothyroidism. When white lines are positioned lower on the nails, it means that you’ve caught the problem in the early stages. White horizontal lines on the nails may be a sign of a cardiac arrest, Hodgkin’s disease, malaria and leprosy, and it there are two horizontal stripes, it’s a sign of hypoalbuminemia, a condition caused by low levels of albumin in the blood. This disorder causes inter alia, kidney disease, liver cirrhosis and other serious medical problems. Don’t worry though – although many serious diseases are related to white lines or patches on your nails, the most probable cause is an inflammatory response to an infection or injury. Vitamin Deficiency Can be Noted by Nails Health Tips in Telugu : విటమిన్ల లోపమా? గోర్లను చూసి చెప్పేయచ్చు Fingernails can indicate health problems by their appearance. Nail abnormalities often involve shape, texture, color and thickness of the nails. Depression lines in fingernails, also known as beau lines, occur due to malnutrition or an injury to your nail. Other possible conditions include koilonychia, leukonychia, fingernail pitting and ridges. According to Medline Plus, a website provided by the National Institutes of Health, liver diseases, kidney diseases and vitamin deficiencies can cause nail abnormalities including fingernail ridges. Contact a doctor if your nails appear blue, clubbed or horizontally ridged or if you see white color under your nails. #Check Your Nails For Health Check your nails weekly to be sure they look healthy. Any abnormality could be significant. Look for texture and color. The shape of the nails could indicate a problem as well. Squared nails might be caused by hormone problems. General malnourishment can cause “dents” in the nails, called “Beau’s lines.” Vitamin C deficiency is sometimes linked with red-brown spots and pits at the end of nails. In more mild forms, a lack of vitamin C is thought to cause more hang nails and swelling near the nail. Yellowed nails indicate that the nail growth is slower than normal, which is associated with a number of health problems, such as diabetes, but it's also related to deficiencies in iron and zinc. Zinc deficiency may also show up as white spots on the nails. Severe iron deficiency can cause flattened nails that have depressions, called koilonychias. Iron deficiency can cause a lack of energy. We’ve all seen the white marks on our fingernails from where we somehow banged and injured the base of the nail, but seeing a black stripe on someone’s fingernail or even toenail is quite unusual. Now one expert is advising about the danger this warning sign might reveal. New York based nail specialist and board certified dermatologist Dr. Dana Stern warns a black stripe from top to bottom of a nail is a sign of a potentially lethal nail cancer. The cancer isn’t in the nail itself, but in the nail bed. “Just like you have moles on your skin you can have a mole on your nail matrix which is where the nail grows from,” explains Stern. A patient named Julie came to her when she noticed the discoloration in her nail. “There was a brown line across my fingernail for I would say maybe a few years,” patient Julie told CBS 2’s Dr. Max Gomez. “It started as a light line and then it eventually started getting wider and the middle of it started to get really black,” Julie said. She caught the cancer early and was able to undergo treatment, which consisted of removing the nail, the cancer and the tissue around it. In some cases, it’s necessary to amputate the end of the finger, which is why Stern advises everyone to keep an eye out for anything different and strange regarding their nails. “People will sometimes develop an early melanoma and think it’s an injury and they don’t even really realize they’re supposed to go to their dermatologist,” Stern warns. The most common nails to be affected by this cancer are said to be the thumb, big toe and index finger nail. The warning signs include blurred borders, a very dark stripe, changes in a stripe that has been there before and the patient’s medical history. Dr. Gomez reports that nail cancer is more common in African-Americans, adding it’s what reggae legend Bob Marley succumbed to.

Did you know that your fingernails can provide clues to your overall health? Abnormalities that occur on the nails may warrant a closer look. White Dots On Nails Leukonychia Commonly called white nails or milk spots, and is more frequently located on fingernails compared to toenails and often can be found in the central portion of the nail plate. The normal nail beds needs to be pink in color. These white spots usually are not hatrmful, although in some other situations it could be an indication of an underlying disease. Bacterial or perhaps fungal infection on the nails could potentially cause, this effect. This condition can also be found in people with arsenic poisoning, kidney failure or respiratory conditions. Contact with extreme cold could possibly result in this condition, but these spots will slowly vanish over time. Cracked or Split Nails Dry, brittle nails that frequently crack or split have been linked to thyroid disease. Cracking or splitting combined with a yellowish colour is more likely due to a fungal infection. Low levels of Vitamin C, folic acid, and certain proteins in the diet are also known to cause nail splitting. White Nails If the nails are mostly white with darker rims, this can indicate liver problems, such as hepatitis. Nails yellowish in color can indicate jaundice, which is another sign of liver trouble. Very pale nails can sometimes be a sign of other serious illnesses, such as: Anemia Congestive heart failure Liver disease Malnutrition White Dots If small white dots that appear on the surface of the nail that won't budge when you try to buff them off, this is usually due to some type of trauma—such as a banged finger. In time they should grow out and fade, but if they don't go away it could be a sign of milk spots as discussed earlier so you may need to see a dermatologist. Bluish Nails The medical term of Blue fingernails is cyanosis, and can be a sign of various disorders so it should be checked out. While very cold temperatures can temporarily slow the flow of blood through the skin leading to a bluish color, this should go away once you warm up. It can also be a sign of Raynaud's disease. Yellow Nails Syndrome With yellow nail syndrome, nails thicken and new growth slows. This results in a yellowish discoloration of the nails. One of the most common causes of yellow nails is a fungal infection. As the infection worsens, the nail bed may retract, and nails may thicken, crumble, lack a cuticle and detach from the nail bed in places. Yellow nail syndrome is often a sign of respiratory disease, such as chronic bronchitis. Yellow nail syndrome can also be related to swelling of the hands (lymphedema). In rare cases, yellow nails can indicate a more serious condition such as severe thyroid disease, lung disease, diabetes or psoriasis Nail Pitting Small hole or ice pick-like depressions in the nails (nail pitting) are common in people who have psoriasis, which is a condition characterized by scaly patches on the skin. Nail pitting can also be related to connective tissue disorders, such as Reiter's syndrome, and alopecia Green Nails Green nails are the result of a pseudomonal infection, which is usually caused by the environment. This means that those who's immune system is already low are very susceptible to this type of nail infection which makes the nail often appears green in color. Nail Ridges These can either be horizontal or vertical. With vertical nail ridges, this can signify nutrition issues, moisture loss or nutritional absorption issues. Horizontal ridges in the nail are often associated with diabetes, liver diseases or other chronic diseases. Dark Lines Beneath the Nail If you have dark skin, it's fairly common to have streaks of the pigment melanin down your fingernails. However, you should still get this checked by a doctor, as it may occasionally indicate a form of skin cancer called subungual melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Generally this only affects one nail, causing the stripe to change in appearance, and becoming wider or darker over time. The pigmentation may also affect the surrounding skin. Rippled Nails

When nails aren’t covered with a nail polish, they can tell a lot about the state of your health. Healthy nails are smooth and have a consistent color. Anything else affecting the growth or appearance of the fingernails or toenails may indicate an abnormality. Nail abnormalities, in most cases, are not serious and can be easily treated. In other cases, a health condition that may need medical attention and treatment might be the cause. Some people’s nails are yellow. The so-called "yellow nail syndrome" occurs in patients with serious pulmonary disease and lymphedema (swelling of the extremities). In these patients, most if not all of the nails are yellowish. Other people have blueish nails. In this condition, the nails are really normal in color but the nail bed, the tissue that lies beneath the nail plate, is blue. This is commonly called nail bed cyanosis and is a sign of poorly oxygenated blood or more accurately unoxygenated hemoglobin, the oxygen carrying protein in red blood cells. Nail pitting is a classical sign of psoriasis in the nail. This appears as tiny holes in the nail surface. Rippling of the nail surface is seen in patients with dermatitis of the fingertips. This can be a result of atopic dermatitis, irritant dermatitis, or allergic contact dermatitis. What’s your state of health and what’s the condition of your nails? How to Recognize Protein Deficiency. Protein plays a vital role in the daily functioning of our bodies. If you don’t have enough of it, your body will suffer. According to UN data, around 1 billion people worldwide are protein deficient. How do you know if you’re one of them? You’d better watch out for these 10 signs and symptoms related to protein deficiency so you’ll know when there’s a problem. To make things clear, when we say “not enough protein,” we mean somewhere under 56 g for men and 46 g for women per day. For kids, it varies from 19 g to 34 g depending on their age. This figure may also vary if you are pregnant or ill. According to the US Department of Agriculture, you can calculate a more specific amount using a simple formula. Try to eat about 0.36 g of protein for every pound of your weight. TIMESTAMPS Food cravings 0:41 Loss of muscle mass and joint pain 1:54 Skin and nail problems 2:41 Hair loss 3:24 Fatty liver 4:11 Increased risk of bone fractures 4:39 Sleep deprivation 5:19 Headaches and frequent illnesses 5:48 Swollen feet 6:18 Brain fog 6:38 Bonus: How to get enough protein 7:12 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -If you always feel hungry and have cravings for food and snacks, it may be because of a low-protein, high-carb, and sugar-filled diet. -When you’re unable to build muscle mass (even if you’re working out), this can lead to muscle waste or atrophy. It can also make you constantly feel tired and gain fat. -A protein deficiency can result in weak and brittle nails. In a few cases, people might observe white bands and brownish spots on their nails. A protein deficiency can affect the skin as well because protein enables cell regeneration, produces new cells, and replaces dead ones. -If you don’t get enough nutrients, your hair may thin and fade. This happens because the body stops using protein for nonessential things, like hair growth, in an effort to preserve it. -A fatty liver is one of the most common symptoms of a protein deficiency. If left untreated, it can cause fatty liver disease, which leads to inflammation, liver scarring, and potential liver failure. -Just as with your muscles, a low intake of protein can also affect your bones. Not having enough protein leads to a weakening of the bones, thus increasing the risk of bone fractures. -If you have trouble sleeping or suffer from sleep deprivation, it’s likely linked to a protein deficiency. -There can be multiple reasons for your headaches, and 2 reasons are anemia and low blood sugar levels. You can blame a lack of protein for both. -Edema is a condition in which extra fluid builds up in your body and makes your legs swell. Harvard Health Publications links low protein levels and edema. -If you experience a lack of motivation, poor memory, or trouble learning anything new, it’s a sign that you are protein deficient. -To get enough protein, balance your meat, dairy, fish, and egg intake with healthy vegetarian and vegan proteins. Make beans, nuts and seeds (such as almonds, flax, chia, and hemp), spinach, and broccoli your new best friends.
