The southern Gobi desert in Mongolia was one of the world's last great wildernesses with its cold desert of vast plains and wide roaming herds. Today it is the centre of the planet's greatest resource boom. But this has started to have a detrimental effect on nomad communities, as Jonathan Watts reports

Despite heavy casualties during the battle of Kosovo (1389) against a broad alliance of the Balkan peoples led by Serbian lord Lazar and battle of Nicopolis (1396) against European Crusaders led by Jean of Never, Sigismund I of Hungary and Mircea I of Wallachia, Ottoman empire continued to expand under the leadership of sultan Yildirim Bayezid I. To the east new empire under amir Timur (Tamerlane) was on the rise and as the borders of two empires touched, the war was inevitable. The battle of Ankara of 1402 was one of the biggest fought between the Muslim empires. At the same time, results of this massive battle impacted Ottoman, Timurid, Byzantine empires and changed the course of the history of Europe, Asia, Middle East and Balkans. Chosen by Tengri 2014 Rain beats down with the sound of our war drum Our faces hard, our steel sharp We trudge along a broken path The scent of mist is cold and damp A village lies upon the steppe We sprung the attack while they slept Archers take place upon the hill whistling arrows ring out shrill Their militia rises to make their stand We cut them down, with spear in hand Our men tear through the barricade then came forth the cavalcade We tear through their ranks Leaving nothing left We hack through flesh and bone The blood lust boils Their lives are all mine Take that child's life Obey my every word Or live in strife Rape their women Put them to the torch I'll see them gutted All will know my hate I am fire, I am hate, I am the one to decide your fate I am god, I am death, All you know, I'll desecrate I am a man of the Khan I know all of his rules I don't care for his cause I am the Scourge Of the Eastern Steppe My horde is my own Here, I am Khan I am fire, I am hate, I am the one to decide your fate I am god, I am death, All you know, I'll desecrate Know my name! Zewegg! All will know of the scourge Know my ways of massare All the East shall be purged As we stand upon ruins of battle Kara Name smiles on us Galloping hooves gather from the south A mighty horde rides on us They sweep the hills riding us down Flying the flag of our own khan My men disperse at his will My scourge had ended My men begin to turn on me Pulling me down from my steed They drag me out before their leader He looks down on me with distaste "Zewegg, you know of your crimes You've come to see yourself divine You became a monster over time And now it's time to die!" Quick grab the rope He shall die as he lived Arrows in the knees broken underfoot Strung to a horse Dragged for 7 miles left out for dead Erlik here I come!

To mark 20 years of partnership between USAID and Mongolia, we asked Mongolians to tell us about how they, and their country, have changed during that time. After withdrawal of Soviet support in 1990, Baganuur coal mine was on the verge of failure. In his 20 years at the mine, Daavasuren has seen Baganuur regain its footing with support from USAID, and continue to supply the country with coal.

The "law with the long name" had ben adopted in Parliament to protect the lands and water sources of the Mongolian people and to strengthen the local economy. Now, the government is giving away mining rights and herding grounds to foreign companies, initiating a spiteful cycle of fast money and longterm problems. To remind the world that there is something very wrong with mining politics in Mongolia.

Ulan Bator & Amazing - The Capital and The Largest City Part I - Ulan Bator or Ulaanbaatar /ˌuːlɑːn ˈbɑːtər/ (Mongolian: Улаанбаатар, [ʊɮɑːŋ.bɑːtʰɑ̆r], Ulaγanbaγatur, literally "Red Hero") is the capital and the largest city of Mongolia. An independent municipality, the city is not part of any province, and its population as of 2014 is over 1.3 million. Located in north central Mongolia, the city lies at an elevation of about 1,310 metres (4,300 ft) in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the cultural, industrial, and financial heart of the country. It is the centre of Mongolia's road network, and is connected by rail to both the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia and the Chinese railway system. Ulan Bator has been given numerous names in its history. Before 1911, the official name was Ikh Khüree (Mongolian: Их Хүрээ, "Great Camp") or Daa Khüree (Даа Хүрээ, dà, "great"), or simply Khüree. The Chinese equivalent, Dà kùlún (大庫倫), was rendered into Western languages as "Kulun" or "Kuren." Human habitation at the site of Ulan Bator dates from the Lower Paleolithic. Alexey Okladnikov's archeological work in 1949 and 1960 revealed many Paleolithic sites on Mt. Bogd Khan Uul, Buyant-Ukhaa and Mt. Songinokhairkhan. In 1962 various Paleolithic tools were discovered at Mt. Songinokhairkhan as well as Buyant-Ukhaa (23 stone tools) that scholars date from 300,000 years ago to 40,000-12,000 years ago. Ulan Bator is located at about 1,350 metres (4,430 ft) above mean sea level, slightly east of the centre of Mongolia on the Tuul River, a subtributary of the Selenge, in a valley at the foot of the mountain Bogd Khan Uul. Bogd Khan Uul is a broad, heavily forested mountain rising 2,250 metres (7,380 ft) to the south of Ulan Bator. It forms the boundary between the steppe zone to the south and the forest-steppe zone to the north. The city features brief, warm summers and long, bitterly cold and dry winters. The coldest January temperatures, usually at the time just before sunrise, are between −36 °C (−33 °F) and −40 °C (−40 °F) with no wind, due to temperature inversion. Most of the annual precipitation of 267 millimetres (10.51 in) falls from June to September. The highest recorded precipitation in the city was 659 mm (26 in) at the Khureltogoot Astronomical Observatory on Mount Bogd Khan Uul. In this video of Tavan Tolgoi the dramatic development of two coal mines (particularly from 2009 onwards) and the associated impacts of landscape fragmentation through the creation of mine related road and track networks, is observed. Also evident is the increasing urbanisation of Tsogttsetsii and Tavan Tolgoi urban centres. One key feature to note is the changing water availability in the lake through time. Ground-truthing and future community interviews will determine the potential impact that the mine development has on the capacity of local herding communities to continue using this scarce resource. CSRM's ADRAS research is funded by the Australian Government Aid program, and investigates threats to the sustainability of herder livelihoods through social changes stimulated directly and indirectly by ecological impacts.

After the show in Hohhot, a friend of the Mongolian musicians we collaborated with was hanging out in the dressing room. With the slightest of proddings she burst into a Mongolian folk dance accompanied by horse head fiddle. It was one of those sublime, unexpected moments that happens on a tour like this and we were all mesmerized by this young lady's graceful moves. It also happened that the head of public diplomacy from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, Tom Skipper, was hanging out in the dressing room that night and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. It was perhaps a measure of thanks to the U.S. Embassy for sponsoring this Silk Road tour. http://abigailwashburn.com Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF Tour Map: http://g.co/maps/dnh73 Shot & Edited by Luke Mines
