Mining and investing in Chile – Patricio Powell, Embassy of Chile in Australia

07:50
We caught up with Patricio Powell, Ambassador of the Embassy of Chile in Australia at the 2018 International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC). With the Electric Vehicle (EV) revolution creating a massive increase in demand for copper. We asked Patricio if Chile has been doing anything to encourage further exploration and development of the metal. As the mining sector in Chile is one of the pillars of the country's economy, and copper accounting for about one-third of government income, we asked if the dependency on copper was worrying and if Chile had any plans to diversify away from copper. Traditionally, Chile has looked to Canada for mining expertise and finance, with Australian interest being focussed on Asia and Africa. Patricio provided insights into whether this is changing, and if there has been increasing interest in Chile from Australian mining companies and investors. Patricio also provided an update on the industry’s use of scarce water resources and how this issue is being resolved, before discussing whether there are any plans for greater private ownership of the world’s largest copper producer, state-owned Codelco.
