Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them: https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/mining/thousands-of-mining-jobs-are-waiting-in-western-australia-but-aussies-dont-want-them/news-story/9abb09bee9c85fc6419597a14e77df3e. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd_ODCcrc4jEWgi4qYyy0wg?sub_confirmation=1 From 2012 to 2016, the mining industry experienced a severe downturn, culling close to 60,000 jobs and making full-time work an almost impossible get. But now, especially in Western Australia and Queensland, the mining industry is on the road to recovery — and companies are begging Aussies to come and work for them. According to the latest data from SEEK, the mining, resource and energy sector has consistently recorded the largest growth in job ads for the past 11 months. The sector is throwing out 32 per cent more job ads now than it was at the same time last year and is posting almost four times more job ads than Australia’s average. But just because mining companies are putting out thousands of ads and offering salaries paying well over $150,000 doesn’t mean Aussies are picking them up. Earlier this week, the CEO of WA’s Chamber of Minerals and Energy backed a migration agreement that would hopefully combat a severe skills shortage in the mining region of the Goldfields. If approved, the Designated Area Migration Agreement would allow overseas workers to be flown over to work in the mines and would make them exempt from the skilled migrants requirement. Chief executive Paul Everingham told the ABC there were more than 1000 vacancies in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder mining sector and said the region was at crisis point. “You can’t sugar coat that — they’re available now and they’re not being filled, so however you can get them (workers),” Mr Everingham said. “All Australian companies want to employ Australians first, but if there aren’t enough Australians … we have got to remember there’s an infrastructure boom going on in NSW. “So if we have to set up special immigration or work zones, our members would definitely welcome the ability to get access to skilled workers immediately.” The WA mining industry is advertising for thousands of jobs ranging from cleaners to tradesmen to university-educated engineers. But following Mr Everidge’s comments, a number of people involved in the state’s mining industry have said more needs to be done to make relocating an attractive proposition. Despite the huge salaries fly-in fly-out workers earn, most complain of having no work-life balance. FIFO workers typically have higher rates of suicide, struggle with depression due to long hours and loneliness and report higher rates of workplace bullying and alcoholism. In 2015, the West Australian government conducted a 10-month investigation into the state’s FIFO workforce. Lifeline WA admitted in October last year it still had no idea exactly how many FIFO workers were affected by mental illness or how many had committed suicide while away from their families to work in the state’s mines. Even the report issued after the lengthy investigation admitted “the inquiry struck several problem areas in relation to statistics”. “Clear data was difficult to find in the areas of: a definitive total number of workers employed in the Western Australia resources industry on a FIFO #Thousands, #mining, #jobs, #waiting, #WesternAustralia, #Aussies, #don’t, #want, #them #miningindustry, #mentalillness, #mentalhealth, #workersdying, #miningindustryaccounts, #flyinflyoutworkers, #Australiangovernment, #miningsector, #resourcesindustry, #Australiancompanies, #parttimework, #miningcompanies, #miningregion, #mentalhealthissues, #migrationagreement, #skilledmigrantsrequirement, #Companiestalk, #miningjobs, #worklifebalance, #suicidestatistics, #prevalencerate, #suiciderates, #crisispoint, #energysector, #productionsites, #skillsshortage, #problemareas, #WesternAustralia, #Australia, #AustraliaandNewZealand, #Oceania, #Queensland, #UniversityofWesternAustralia, #AustralianBureauofStatistics, #CommunityServices, #MentalHealthCommission, #ChamberofMineralsandEnergy, #PeterMiller, #PaulEveringham, #NatalieWolfe

West Virginia, USA - under its wild mountain idyll hides the "black hell": A labyrinth of dark tunnels - hard life in a coal mine. [Online until: 15 August 2019] "Wild, wonderful West Virginia” - that’s how the small state nestled in the Appalachian Mountains bills itself. This documentary reports on the daily struggle facing local coal miners hoping for help from Donald Trump; a sheriff combating the opioid epidemic that has already claimed thousands of lives; and a Cherokee environmental activist whose efforts have earned her intimidation and threats. The whistle of a locomotive at the front of an old coal train, quiet winding roads, and hardly a highway to be found - that’s still the image that many have of West Virginia today. But beneath the forest-covered mountains lies a labyrinth of tunnels just one meter high, in which miners still spend their entire working days toiling in the dark on their hands and knees. The camera team accompanies a traditional coal mining family as they go about their day. Together with the family’s two sons, Scott and Steven Lockhart, the crew ventures into the mine. Conversations with the miners reveal why people who had been lifelong Democratic Party supporters are suddenly placing their hopes for the future in Donald Trump. But the documentary also ventures beyond the coal mines to uncover the lesser-known sides of this Appalachian state - from snake-handling Pentecostal churches to the bluegrass and mountain ballads of Alan Cathead Johnston. We also speak with Sheriff Martin West, who sued the country’s three biggest pharmaceutical makers for their role in the opioid epidemic that has swept the region. And we meet another person who has decided to fight back: Maria Gunnoe, a young Cherokee activist who has dared to take on the coal barons that are ravaging the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The National Union of Mineworkers says over 30 thousand jobs have been lost in the mining sector over the last two years - with more job losses looming. The Union has accused the mining companies of speeding up firings and retrenchments to weaken unions prior to this year's wage negotiations in the mining sector. It says it's members continue to report planned retrenchments at operations countrywide. And that mining houses are blaming high labour costs, recurring strikes and weak commodity prices. "북한 주요광산 남북 공동개발시 연간 9만명 일자리 창출가능" A report by a private research institute shows that if the two Koreas were to jointly develop the mining industry in North Korea, it could create more than 90-thousand jobs a year. The Seoul-based North Korea Resources Institute says... out of some 700 mines projected to be in North Korea, it based its estimate on information about 74 North Korean mines that have deposits of 11 minerals including coal, iron ore and gold. Apart from job growth, it says the project could help reduce South Korea's reliance on imports... and significantly raise its self-sufficiency in those minerals to above 40 percent from the current level of less than three percent.

Monday 30 May, 2016 Audience: Coalition 45%, ALP 35%, Greens 12%, Other 8% Discuss the Questions Here are the questions our panel faced this week. Tell us what your answer would be or what you think our panellists need to say. RISK AVERSE POLITICIANS DONNA BYRNE asked: When I first voted there were federal politicians like Bob Hawke and Malcolm Fraser, and in Queensland Joh Bljeke Petersen and Tom Burns - you might not have liked them but they told you what they thought, they made mistakes and we all moved on. Now politicians have image consultants, media training, speech writers, media advisors and chiefs of staff. Now they are so worried about making a mistake that they won’t even have a genuine leader’s debate. How are we going to get real people to represent and tell to us what they really think when most of our politicians come through the party system and are so risk averse? WORKING POOR RICK JOSEPH asked: I applaud the drive for jobs and growth, but what will be done to help the working poor of this country? Families are struggling from pay cheque to pay cheque with ever increasing prices for electricity, food, rent. The decision to feed your family or attend to medical issues is a constant battle, let alone striving to save enough to have a house of their own. Put yourself in the shoes of these people and actually think - what it is like to have a single constant thought in your mind “how am I going to make ends meet”, not just from the moment you wake up, but during the night because you can’t sleep because you are sick with worry. Please stop and actually think what that might feel like. What are you doing to fix this? PENALTY RATES – CHEF David Carter asked: I've worked as a chef for over 17 years. The Productivity Commission recommended a cut in Sunday penalty rates for people like me in the hospitality industry, but hospitality workers are some of the lowest paid workers in Australia. Steve Ciobo: Why are Sundays more important for those who work in other industries than those who work in hospitality? I give up my weekends to serve others too! PENALTIES COST JOBS RYAN WEBB asked: A recent study by Restaurant and Catering Australia has found that unifying penalty rates across Saturday and Sunday’s could create 40,000 across new jobs in Australia, with almost 9,000 right here in Queensland. With youth unemployment at 13.5% nationally and peaking at well over 20% in regional areas, it’s clear that double-time rates on Sundays are locking tens of thousands of young Australians out of the workforce. If we’re serious about creating jobs and opportunity, wouldn’t ending Sunday penalty rates be a great place to start? PUT MINOR PARTIES LAST? HARRY SPICER asked: My question is for all the cross benchers. Given that you put a gun to the Gillard governments head which resulted in horrendous policy outcomes for Australia, and given that you've now spent the last 3 years being openly hostile to any reform in the senate, as well as regularly being patently unreasonable in negotiations, arguably holding our very democracy to your self interest, why should Australians ever consider putting you above dead last on their ballot papers? HUNG PARLIAMENT PATRICIA BALCHIN asked: In the event of a hung Parliament which party would you choose and who do you think would make the better Prime Minister ? GREENS & PREFERENCE DEALS HANNAH TAYLOR asked: There has been ongoing discussion of preference deals between the Liberals and the Greens in a mutual attempt to undercut Labor seats. Wouldn't any such preference deal, whether formal or informal, be a complete betrayal of the values of both of your parties? TRICKLE DOWN TAX CUTS? NATHAN SCHOLZ asked: Steven Ciobo: My wife and I own a small business, a coffee shop here in Brisbane. The proposed corporate tax cut means we will get an extra $8 a week next year. Given it means everyone in this room, including potential customers, will have to pay more for them and their families to go to the GP, couldn't we cut out the middle man? You keep the $8 and protect bulk billing so my customers will have more money to spend in my shop? QUEENSLAND GHOST TOWNS KRISTY HARLING asked: I have lived in Central Queensland which encompasses towns such as Emerald, Blackwater & Moranbah for a number of years, working in the local mining industry. Today, we see the aftermath of the mining boom after 21,000 jobs have been lost in the region. It breaks my heart, to see local families struggling to put food on the table & to see hundreds of houses empty because of foreclosure with no one to fill them. The people

On 30 March 2015 Havilah commenced its first gold mining operation at the Portia gold mine and poured first gold during April 2016. Eight months later production passed the 20,000 ounce mark and Havilah had repaid all of its debt. A 120 metre southern cutback in progress will access additional gold mineralisation defined by drilling outside of the current open pit design and extend the mine life by at least another 12 months. The cash flow generated by the Portia gold mine will allow Havilah to continue with its exploration drilling programs on numerous promising minerals prospects within its highly prospective 13,000 km² tenement holding in the northeast of South Australia.
