Australian miner Rio Tinto is about to open one of the biggest copper mines on the planet in Mongolia, which will soon account for more than 30% of the country's entire GDP. "Some of the optimistic geologists we have say that this business could run for up to 100 years", Cameron McRae from Rio Tinto explains. But the company only cedes the Mongolian government a 34% stake, provoking worries about where the benefits of Mongolia's resource wealth will go. There's concerns the government is ill-equipped to strike complex mining deals in the national interest. "The deal is a financial transaction and whether it's really beneficial to Mongolia, I have many doubts about that", argues Dorjdari from the Responsible Mining Initiative. Environmentalists also worry that the mining push has come so fast and so aggressively that proper checks and balances are not in place. "Most tourists come to Mongolia because they want to see that pristine open space blue sky, but what if we couldn't offer it anymore?" Sometimes, gold is not where its meant to be. Over looked soils, such as sand, can contain large amount of gold. Too often people walk away from the ultra fine stuff in search of chunky course gold. Sometimes every word is superfluous. These pictures say more than a thousand words. 1. The view over the overdeveloped metro pole of Mexico City (with more than 20 million inhabitants). 2. An elephant killed by poachers left to rot. 3. The rain forest in flames— goats used to graze here. 4. Trails of excessive air traffic over London. 5. A fire storm plows through Colorado — increased incidences of wild fires is a result of climate change. 9. The scars left behind from the mining of oil sands in the Canadian province of Alberta. 10. A nighttime spectacle in downtown Los Angeles—the energy demand is incalculable. 11. In Oregon, this thousand year old forest fell victim to the chain saw for a new dam. 12. The area around Almeria in Spain is littered with greenhouses as far as the eye can see — simply for a richly filled dinner table. 13. The Mir Mine in Russia, the largest diamond mine in the world. 14. A dead albatross shows what happens when we litter. A living dumpster. 15. And yet another megalopolis — a bird's eye view of New Delhi (over 22 million inhabitants). 16. Paradise almost lost: the Maldives, a popular vacation spot that is threatened by rising sea levels. 17. Tons (literally) of broken electronics end up in developing countries and are stripped for precious metals by using deadly substances. 18. The Danakil Desert is a desert in northeast Ethiopia, southern Eritrea, and northwestern Djibouti. Situated in the Afar Triangle, it stretches across 100,000 square kilometres (10,000,000 ha) of arid terrain. The area is known for its volcanoes and extreme heat, with daytime temperatures surpassing 50 °C (122 °F). The Danakil Desert is one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. It is inhabited by a few Afar, who engage in salt mining. Local geology is characterized by volcanic and tectonic activity, various climate cycles, and discontinuous erosion. The Danakil Desert has a number of lakes formed by lava flows that dammed up several valleys. Among these is Lake Afrera, which has thick saline crusts on its banks. The area is flanked toward the east by the Dancal Alps, a tabular mountain system that has a few volcanic cones which peak in height in Mount Ramlo (2,130 metres (6,990 ft)). A plinth of salt up to 800 metres (2,600 ft) thick can also be found in the Salt Plain flatlands. Other local lakes include Lake Asale (116 metres (381 ft) below sea level) and Lake Giuletti/Afrera (80 metres (260 ft) below sea level), both of which possess cryptodepressions in the Danakil Depression. The Afrera contains many active volcanoes, including the Maraho, Dabbahu, Afdera and Erta Ale. The Afar people mine for a day more until the camels are fully loaded with the salt tiles. It will then take two days to get to the nearest town, with guards watching the camels and guarding them from bandits. Be sure to check out the full description. If I may be honest; some of you may find this video not quite as exciting as the normal videos but I hope that’s not the case. After researching Ed Nazelrod from the Abandoned VW Bus video, I went back to explore the area some more. I found out the area had been mined during the Anasazi period starting around 500 A.D. Near the end of the video I talk about the impressions and older dig sites; its said to be more of the ancient mines by the Indians; why they weren’t explored I don’t know. I did manage to find some Black Obsidian, White Quartz, Turquoise, and Basalt, I’m not sure what class they fall into ie: rock, mineral or gems. The Basalt rocks are described in the articles as the “stone hammers” used by the Indians of the period. I just find it exciting and amazing to be walking around the same area as the Indians did over a thousand years ago. I think the cabin may have been one of Ed Nazelrods prospecting cabins for overnight stays possibly. I did manage to find what I believe was his actual residence; it was another abandoned trailer behind the mountain with mailing labels for Ed Nazelrod. I’ll start working on that video soon and one for Turquoise mountain #abandoned #ancient #exploring LINKS: http://nsm.fullerton.edu/dsc/images/DSCdocs/2005oldores.pdf scroll to pages 64 & 65 http://vredenburgh.org/mining_history/pages/silurian-shadow-mts-halloran-sprs%20.html scroll to the part about Halloran Spring Turquoise mine

Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews Google Earth's latest satellite images show that there are many large, elusive architectural designs in China's Gobi Desert. These structures are distributed near the Jiuquan launch base of Chin's space program, and Ding xin military base. Google Maps recently discovered a number of strange structures in China's northwest Gobi Desert. These structures are mostly located in the junction of Xinjiang and Gansu Provinces, northwest of Dunhuang City, and north of Shule River. Two structures look like huge white lines of plan map with street without surroundings. Range in about 1.6 km long and 0.9 km wide. Between the two structures, there is a 4 ×4 square array of metal objects which is like a huge target. At a closer look it can be seen that the formations on the map are destroyed vehicles. One of the other two nearby structures, which are like runways, appears to be bright blue on the map. In the place close to Xinjiang, there is a circular area. There are some planes in the middle, surround by military vehicles and other objects, arranged in a few concentric circles. Another satellite image shows that there is a huge desert-like circle resembling the Eight Diagrams. Another photo shows rows of scattered wreckage of what looks like destroyed cars. Some of the structures are located in less than 160 km from the Jiuquan launch center of China's space projects. Others are about 643 km from the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) Dingxin Air Force Base, which is 640 km from Lop Nur. What is the usage of the structures shown on these images? Back in 2008, Google Earth found in the junction of Xinjiang and Gansu provinces many mysterious facilities. Britain's "Jane's Defense Weekly" (JDW) compared these structures with those located in "Area 51," Nevada, US. JDW said that the circle-shaped objects look like missile testing range sites, used to record the effect of weapons. There are many facilities like this in Area 51, Nevada, US. In addition, on November 11, the Daily Telegraph reported that Google Maps published new images of Iran's nuclear facilities of Arak and Natanz. Compared with images from 2010, part of the construction of nuclear facilities and factories in Arak has been removed. But in its central location a new building has been built. Arak is the capital of Iran's central province. There is a heavy water reactor plant in the region. Iran claimed that this facility was used for the production of nuclear power. Natanz is in central Iran and it has uranium enrichment plant. These so-called nuclear facilities enclose a multi-layer of Iran's biggest defense system facilities. Not long ago, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a 12-page report in Vienna, Austria. It revealed information that Iran has carried out the work of developing nuclear warheads. Moreover, there is evidence that Iran has engaged in "specialization on nuclear weapons" activities. Including the trial of associated components of nuclear weapons and testing. Some of these activities are likely still in progress. For China's great mystery pattern in Gobi, it is difficult to explain how these patterns are formed. Did they color the terrain, or drill in geological signs? Some experts speculate these structures may be missile test sites. The once flush-with-cash town of Ordos, China, has been called the world's largest ghost town. Roughly 15 years ago, a coal mining boom led local government to throw money at urban development there, in the hopes of creating a new epicenter of culture, economy, and politics. Ordos New Town — also known as Kangbashi — would hold one million residents and be known for its massive conceptual architecture projects, residential towers, and state-of-the-art sports venues. But high property taxes and poor construction deterred people from settling in Ordos. Today, though some 100,000 people call it home, most of the city sits unused, wasting away. Built for over a million people, the city of Ordos was designed to be the crowning glory of Inner Mongolia. Doomed to incompletion however, this futuristic metropolis now rises empty out of the deserts of northern China. Only 2% of its buildings were ever filled; the rest has largely been left to decay, abandoned mid-construction, earning Ordos the title of China's Ghost City. Photographs of the Chinese city of Ordos reveal a stunning landscape: a futuristic city that languishes almost totally abandoned, as if its population had been abruptly raptured. Subscribe to ITN News: http://bit.ly/itnytsub Eagles have been known to attack smaller birds, snakes and mammals but it is rare for such an incident to be caught on camera. The Zoological Society of London has released three photographs of a massive golden eagle digging its claws into a sika deer's back, and the pictures have become an online sensation. The rare attack happened in Russia's far east, and the young, but large deer was actually killed by the bird of prey. The proof of that came in the form of a fourth photo, snapped by remote cameras two weeks later. The deer's mangled carcass was spotted by a researcher as she approached the camera trap to switch the memory cards and change the batteries. The fact that there were no tracks leading up to the dead deer prompted scientists to check the cameras, and that is when they saw the eagle attack. The traps were originally set up in the Lazovsky Nature Reserve to monitor Siberian tigers. Golden eagles do not often attack deer in the wild, which adds even more scientific value to the photos. Eleven activists entered chemical company Orica's Botany Bay plant to label and lock down highly toxic and carcinogenic waste - hexachlorobenzene (HCB) - destined for Denmark. Orica is responsible for at least 16,000 tonnes of the banned carcinogen HCB. Instead of dealing with the waste itself, Orica is proposing to transport a total of 6,100 tonnes of HCB, in multiple shipments, to Nyborg in Denmark for incineration. It has no accepted plan for the remaining 10,000 tonnes. Other toxic chlorinated pollutants have leeched from the Botany Bay site, poisoning groundwater for thousands of Sydney residents. The shipment is in contravention of both international and domestic law. Under the UN Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, HCB waste can only be exported to another OECD country under the exceptional circumstance where there is no technology available in-country to treat and destroy the waste.

Centralia, Pennsylvania: The Burning Town by Chris Chaos Centralia: The Pennsylvania abandoned town that has been burning for over 50 years. On May, 27th 1962 the fire started and has been raging ever since. Exact details are sketchy about how the fire actually started but according to historical documents it states that burning trash from the landfill set an exposed coal vein in an abandoned strip mine on fire. The movie and video game SILENT HILL were based on this PA town. This small coal mining town use to be home to over 2,000 people has now been just about completely abandoned, although a few residents still call this town home. As of our last visit most of the houses and streets have been bulldozed and are reduced to a smoldering former shadow of themselves. You can see the toxic gas spewing from the cracks in the ground all over the area. A sign warns visitors to enter at their own risk. Usually locations like this that attract visitors are heavily paroled by the police to prevent vandalism or to stop teens from partying or hurting themselves. While we were documenting the location a police office approached us and asked us what were were doing. When he saw we were simply taking photos he wished us well and explained to us that he thought we may have been illegally dumping. For just about 20 years firefighters have attempted to put out this massive fire but as it being underground and with seemingly an endless line of fuel that has proven very unsuccessful. Scientists state that there is enough coal to keep the fires burning for another 250 years. Back in 1981 a 12 year old boy fell into one of the sinkholes and there have been growing concerns over the dangerous levels of carbon monoxide being released from the ground. After many years of this raging inferno burning underground it weakened the ground and caused the roads and concrete to crumble. In 1993 Congress did set some $42 million aside to relocate the town's residents and the abandoned houses and buildings were bulldozed. Stuck in controversy some of the residents refused to leave. As of 2011 there were 9 residents fighting the state of PA to not evict them from their homes and have their properties razed to the ground. Commonwealth Court has denied another attempt by remaining property owners in Centralia to keep their land. Borough Council President Stephen Hynoski states that the fire has died down and the air quality of Centralia is the same as in Lancaster. He also has a suit pending in U.S. Middle District Court that claims the commonwealth's devious plot of obtaining mineral rights t the anthracite coal that is supposedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars. An interesting thing occurred while we were documenting the location, there is a church (See photo below) in the next town over. Now Centralia is known for the smoke escaping from the ground but over near the church this was not the case. There was no smoke visible, no one was smoking a cigarette and there were no vehicles spewing exhaust. in some of the photos there were massive amounts of smoke and in others there were none. We did not see any smoke/mist with our naked eyes, it was only when we reviewed the photographs. But there is something physically there based on the way the flash of the camera interacted with the smoke. (More pics of this are available, just ask) **Note: It was snowing/sleeting during the night time.

Open-pit mining:http://www.gyratorycrusher.com/quarry/process-line/iron-ore-processing-plant.html tilden:http://www.gyratorycrusher.com/quarry/process-line/iron-ore-processing-plant.html There are, at present, two iron mines operating in the UP--both are in the Marquette Range. This page is devoted to the Tilden Mine, although the other (Empire) Mine is equally impressive. Marquette County's Empire and Tilden mines together produce 20% of North America's iron ore. When the Empire and Tilden mines are producing concentrated iron ore pellets at full capacity, they produce bined) nearly 16 million tons a year. Open-pit iron mining in the 21st century is an expensive proposition that uses explosives, puters, telmunications equipment, immensely powerful machinery and huge quantities of energy to convert iron-bearing rock into marble-sized pellets of concentrated ore. To justify the huge investment in such machinery, the mines run 24-hours a day, seven days a week. When they need to cut production, they often shut down entirely for a period of weeks, rather than attempting to operate below capacity. An old image of the Empire processing plant, and its very large open pit, are shown below. In time, it is the cost of transporting the ore from the ever-deepening pit bottom that will close these mines. Economically, it is the cost of transportation (including not only diesel fuel but labor, tires, capital equipment, etc.) that trims the profit margin to zero and causes the mine to close--not the diminished quality of the ore. Concentrating Magnetite First ground to a fine powder, the ore is next concentrated using magnetic separation and flotation to 60 to 65 % iron, then rolled into 3/8" dia pellets that are purplish-grey when they emerge, steaming, from the plants. Turning low-grade crude ore into high-grade concentrate requires a means of separating the iron particles from the waste rock. In the magnetite operation, magnetic separators known as cobbers and finishers (see image below) help perform that function. Ever blown a tire? The other day I was fully loaded going up a ramp, and I had a blowout on the left front tire. It blew a two-foot hole in t

Open Science goes Geo - Part III: Beyond Data and Software This short course forms Part III in the Short Course series 'Open Science goes Geo'. Part III covers various forms of research results including algorithms, numerical models, geo-samples, virtual workspaces, and further aspects of Open Science such as metrics, persistent identifiers, and unambiguous linking of research results to scientists. Open Science is a broad movement looking beyond Open Access to publish openly and share scientific research immediately. Accessibility is addressed on all levels for everyone, without fees. Open Science not only deals with Open Access papers but scientific research results in general including figures, data, models, algorithms, software, tools, notebooks, laboratory designs, recipes, samples and much more. Furthermore, it covers the communication, review, and discussion of research results and considers changing needs regarding incentives, quality assessment, metrics, impact, reputation, grants and funding. Thus Open Science encompasses licensing, policy-making, infrastructures and scientific heritage while safeguarding the dynamic nature of science and its evolving forms. However, this short course is meant not to carry too far with Open Science. Rather, the short course looks at what innovative ways to collaborate and share research are possible nowadays and how they can be applied to the geosciences. The speakers present Open Science solutions and introduce networks. It is aimed to show how researchers can benefit from Open Science in various flavors, acknowledging the drawbacks and highlighting the opportunities available for geoscientists. Are you thinking BIG enough? What could convince an ex-Silicon Valley entrepreneur to dedicate the next chapter of his life to the grasslands of Montana? A puzzle that will take generations to solve, and the chance to leave a permanent, positive mark on the Earth and humanity — one that will be visible from space. Join American Prairie Reserve president and National Geographic Explorer Sean Gerrity as he brings the spirit of the legendary Great Plains to Mountain View and shares gorgeous photos and videos documenting his team’s progress in building the largest wildlife complex ever assembled in the continental United States. When complete, the Reserve will be more than four times the size of Yosemite, more than one million acres larger than Yellowstone National Park, and home to wildlife populations on par with Africa’s Serengeti. There is no road map for conservation on this scale. Sean and team are pioneering an innovative approach to extraordinarily large land assembly, complex sociological challenges and unique public private partnerships that are helping to re-start the Golden Era of large-scale conservation in the U.S. Sean will speak on applying what he learned about creativity and building upon big ideas during his twenty years in the Valley to something that will one day be appreciated by millions.

Pictures of the Scottish countryside taken from across Scotland. Accompanied by the music of Enya (Smaointe - Thoughts ) . Enya was born Eithne Ni Bhraonain in Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland, to a musical family in the early 1960s. Her first language, as well as her name, is Gaelic; Enya is an English spelling of the pronunciation of her first name. She and several of her eight siblings inherited their parents’ musical abilities and were involved in the Irish folk group, Clannad. In 1982 though, Enya left the group to find follow her own inspiration. To pursue this goal she traveled to Dublin, where she rented a room in the home of former Clannad manager Nicky Ryan. She struck up a working relationship with Ryan’s wife, Roma, who began providing Enya with lyrics for her compositions. Eventually, in 1985, Enya was contracted to score a film for David Puttnam entitled The Frog Prince. This opportunity led to her real breakthrough, recording the soundtrack of the BBC television series “The Celts.” Music from this project was released on the album Enya by Atlantic Records. Though critic Michael Tearson of Audio pointed out that Enya “is not as elaborate” as the artist’s later Watermark, he recommended it “as a fitting companion” to the more popular album.

In this video I have made a list of five Ghost Towns of Modern Era. Please Subscribe to My Channel for more interesting videos. 1.Galway, the ghost county in Ireland Like Spain, Ireland has not been spared the adverse effects caused by the bursting of the housing bubble. Located in the province of Connacht, County Galway, the city covers 6148 square kilometers. Since late 2007, the property prices there fell by almost 45%. Now, the desertion of some neighbourhoods gives this area the look of ghost county. The desertion of buildings is not without public safety problems. In February, a two year old child was killed by falling into a ravine in Athlone, a ghost town in the Midlands. A news story that sparked national outrage. 2.Detroit, the ghost “Motor City” Once viewed as the birthplace of the American automobile industry, the city is now facing the decline of the industry. In August 2012, the unemployment in the city reached 19.6%. In this context, it is not surprising that workers are leaving the city. Despite a relatively low price per square meter, homes do not attract the interest of potential buyers. According to RealtyTrac, which lists foreclosures houses, in 2012 more than 5,000 house holds could not finish paying debts and 263 homes are about to be confiscated. 3.Valdeluz, a Spanish city deserted four years after its construction Located in the province of Guadalajara, the city was designed to accommodate more than 30,000 people. The proximity to Madrid, which is about sixty miles north, was one of the main attractions of this urban complex whose construction began in 2004. However, till 2011 only 1200 people live there. A shopping center of 900 m2 was built in the city to give it a new life. 4.Kangbashi’s, the most famous ghost town of China Designed as an extension of the city of Ordos in inner Mongolia, Kangbashi is the most famous ghost town of China. As a result of rush to develop the coal mining industry in the 1990s, the city of Ordos saw great expansion. On the website of the city, the authorities announced that the district Kangbashi will host new political, cultural, economic, scientific and educational institutions. But the high prices of homes discourages potential buyers. The city was constructed to house about one million people but only 30,000 have arrived in Kangbashi. Many buildings remain unfinished and the unsold apartments buildings surround the Genghis Khan square. 5.Keshcarrigan, a ghost town in Ireland Before the economic crisis, Keshcarrigan city had embarked on major real estate development projects. However, with crisis many developers left the buildings in this small village in Leitrim County unfinished. Overall, in Ireland, the number of deserted houses has sky rocketed. In October 2010, according to a report by the Ministry of Environment, there are 33,000 vacant housing across the country.
