Asynchronous 4-bit binary counter (from 0 to 9) in Logisim

Just practicing for school. It's an asynchronous 4-bit binary counter that counts from 0 to 9 in binary and then resets back to 0. Made with JK flip-flops that trigger on the falling edges of the clock signal. When the counter comes to 10 (1010 in binary), resets back to 0 with help of an AND-gate. Can be used for 7-segment displays, but requires a BCD-to-7 segment decoder.

The Use of Asynchronous Counters, Controlled Frequency Divider Controlled frequency dividers are a type of dividers with output frequency determined by the control code. Controlled frequency dividers can be built on asynchronous counters. Let us consider, for example, a divider by 2n, where n is a whole number. The 8-bit counter IE19 operates by input signal with clock speed fT. The output 8-input multiplexer KP7 transmits one of the 7 bits of the counter or the input signal to the circuit's output. The channel is selected by the controlling 3-bit input code. For example, when clocked at 10 MHz, i.e., at the input signal period of 100 nanoseconds, the output signal period can be 100 ns, 200 ns, 400 ns, and so on up to 12.8 microseconds. Undesirable short signals may appear at the output of the circuit during control code switch, since no synchronization of the control code is provided. Therefore the circuit should operate as follows: at first the input control code is set, and only then the operation of the other circuit is allowed, the one to which the output signal, generated by our circuit, is sent. In this case there will be no problem. Delays in switching the counter's bits have no influence as only one of its bits is always in use. It is most important for the first bit of the counter to be switched together with frequency f. If the output parallel register is connected to the output of the asynchronous counter, you can achieve simultaneous switching of all output bits of the counter. This circuit will operate correctly if the tracking period of the clock pulse is greater than the settling time of all the counter bits (in this case - 8-bit counter IE19). The inverter is necessary because the counter is triggered by the negative edge of the input signal, while the register is actuated on the positive edge. This solution eliminates the main drawback of the asynchronous counter - uneven assignment of its output bits. However, the 2nd drawback, i.e. the long delay in assigning the output code, remains. It is not possible to eliminate it; you can just switch to other, faster counters.

The use of asynchronous counters Asynchronous counters are constructed from the chain of JK-flip-flops, each of which operates in the counting mode. The output signal of each flip-flop works as an input signal for the next trigger. Therefore, all bits of the asynchronous counter are switched sequentially, one after another, starting with the lowest order and ending with the highest order. Each next bit switches with a delay relative to the previous one, that is, asynchronously, not simultaneously with the input signal, and other bits. The more bits a counter has, the more time it takes to complete switching of all bits. This imposes severe restrictions on the input signal frequency. If the number of the counter bits is increased, for example, by half, the maximum permissible frequency of the input signal will be automatically reduced by half. There are not so many asynchronous counters in standard series of digital circuits. For example, a 4-bit IE2 binary decimal counter, 4-bit IE5 binary counter and an 8-bit IE19 binary counter. All asynchronous counters work on the negative edge of the S input signal. In schemes counter outputs are indicated 0, 1, 2, 3 ... - as the numbers of output bits of the binary code, or 1, 2, 4, 8 - as the weight of each bit of binary code. It is very simple to combine counters to increase the bit: you need to connect output 8 of the previous counter, issuing lower order bits, to C1 input of the next counter, issuing higher order bits. However when performing the connection one must bear in mind every new bit added increases the overall switch delay of the counter. A multi-bit asynchronous counter can become unacceptably slow. Asynchronous counters are mainly applied for construction of various frequency dividers, i.e. devices issuing an output signal with a frequency that is several times lower than the frequency of the input signal. When frequency dividers are constructed sometimes output signal frequency is not the only important thing. Signal form, duty cycle, i.e. the ratio of pulse repetition period to the duration of these pulses, are also important. In such cases most a meander is often required. It is a digital signal with a duty ratio equal to two. The simplest example of a frequency divider, issuing a meander, is implemented using IE2counter. Counters: General overview A counter is a device intended to count input pulses. Counters have more complex digital circuits with internal memory than registers. A counter is a related chain of T-flip-flops forming a memory with a given number of stable states. Counter bit is equal to the number of T-flip-flops. Every input pulse changes the state of the counter, which is preserved pending the receipt of the next signal. Upon arrival of every new input pulse the binary code at the counter output increases (or decreases) by one. The counter can trigger the negative edge of the input (or clock) signal, or the positive edge. Each counter output is a binary code bit. The bit that switches more often than others (i.e. at every input pulse) will be the low-order digit, and the bit that switches more seldom that others will be the high-order digit. The counter can work to increase the output code at every input pulse. This is the main mode, available in all counters. It is called the counting forward mode. The counter can also work to reduce the output code at every input pulse. This is a counting down or an inverted mode provided in counters, which are called reversible. Inverted counting is quite convenient in circuits where you need to count a specified number of input pulses. Most counters work in the usual binary code. But there are also binary-decimal counters. The limiting the code at their output does not exceed the maximum binary-decimal number possible with a given number of bits. Binary-decimal counters are useful, for example, when organizing a decimal display of their output code. They are used much less than conventional binary counters. The logical function of the counter is indicated by letters ST ("СТ"). Based on their speed all counters are divided into three groups: asynchronous counters (or sequential), synchronous counters with an asynchronous transfer (or parallel counters with a sequential shift, synchronous-asynchronous counters), synchronous counters (or parallel). These differences are mostly manifested at cascading of counters. Synchronous counters have the highest speed, asynchronous counters - the lowest speed, they are managed most easily in comparison to the others.

In particular, this video covers the gated set-reset latch. It begins by reviewing the ungated SR latch, including the risk of making both inputs high at the same time, and then goes on to show how SR latches that were built using NOR gates, and SR latches that were built using NAND gates, can be modified to make gated SR latches. Timing diagrams are also introduced, as a means of describing the behaviour of a latch. The videos that follow this one build upon the principles covered here and include the gated D latch, edge triggered pulse latches and the master slave D type flip-flop.

Application of Synchronous Counters Synchronous or parallel counters are known to be the fastest devices of the kind. The high speed is achieved by a substantial complication of the mircochip's internal structure. This results in the fact that they are more difficult to control if compared to the asynchronous counters and series-carry synchronous counters. That's why synchronous counters should only be used in the cases, when high performance and high digit switching speed is a must. Otherwise the complication of the control circuit is just not worth it. Let's look at some circuits based on synchronous counters. The synchronous counters enable a rather simple implementation of a controlled frequency divider with a conversion factor set by an entry code. In the circuit the carry signal CR produced by the senior counter is supplied to the write enable input EWR. The counters operate in the countdown mode (the zero level signal is supplied to the U/D input). When all the counters reach the null code, a carry signal CR is generated, which switches the devices into the mode of concurrently writing the control code. The next positive edge of the clock C records the entry code in the counters. This results in a new count cycle from the entry code to zero. The next circuit - a generator of a time interval of the set duration - demonstrates how the output carry signal of synchronous counters should be used when required is a single operation cycle. The generator's operation is triggered by a short negative pulse Start, which sets the control flip-flop to one and starts the input signal. The positive signal from the flip-flop output switches the 8-digit synchronous counter from the concurrent write mode to the count mode (on EWR input). The countdown is performed on the positive edge of the clock from the generator. When the counter reaches zero, the next positive edge of the clock writes the carry signal CR into the flip-flop. This concludes the output signal, and the counter switches to the concurrent write mode. The next operation cycle of the generator starts at the Start signal. The use of synchronous counters can be associated with their ability to concurrently write on the clock edge.
