Warlords, soldiers, and child laborers all toil over a mineral you've never even heard of. Coltan is a conflict mineral in nearly every cell phone, laptop, and electronic device. It's also tied to the deaths of over 5 million people in Congo since 1990. July 2005 The major problem facing Africa is corruption and control of resources. In the DRC, the military is stealing minerals to sell to Western companies. At a remote mine in central DRC, workers with torches and pick axes hack at the ruddy earth. They are mining cassiterite, a mineral vital in the production of laptops and mobile phones. But dispersed among the miners are Congolese Government troops -- in plain clothes for the camera -- literally forcing most workers to work at gunpoint. 'The soldiers always steal everything. They even come to shoot people down the mineshafts,' complains Regina Maponda. Western greed for cassiterite is fuelling the boom -- at an airfield near the mine, soldiers jealously guard their loot as it makes it way to Japan and the West. Conflict mining is a curse, and it is difficult to see what the G8 leaders can do.

Tanzania is Africas third largest gold producer, after South Africa and Ghana. And during these difficult economic times should be a bit of a good news story but mining the yellow metal is proving a challenge. The biggest challenge being the lack of adequate infrastructure.

China's economic interests in Africa is one of the most recognised and talked about international engagements. Earlier this month, Xi Jinping pledged to provide Africa $60BN over the next 8 years. But the portrayal of China’s investments in Africa have been particularly negative in the West with headlines such as “Is China Good or Bad for Africa?” China in Africa: Collaboration or Colonialism? So, is China colonising Africa in a new form of colonialism? What do African's think? And what do the facts say? European exploration had a lot of side effects. When the Old World and the New World began to interact, people, wealth, food, animals, and disease began to flow in both directions. In the New World, countless millions were killed by smallpox, measles, and other Old World diseases. Old World animals changed life in the New World irrevocably, and the extraction of wealth and resources from the Americas ultimately contributed to the development of the Atlantic Slave Trade. So, it was an exchange with a lot of downside, especially for non-Europeans. Metal prices on world markets have continued their downward path amid volatile trade, hit by gloomy prospects for global economic growth and uncertainty inside the European Union. Copper, an economic barometer of world manufacturing and construction, has seen the market price fall more than a third since 2012. Many African nations are vulnerable to dramatic market swings in commodity prices and have suffered as a consequence. The stories of Sabitri, Carlos and Mustafa, working in informal recycling sector in India, Peru and Ghana, and how the Sustainable Recycling Initiative changes their lives. And we all can keep enjoying our electric and electronical devices. 1. The world population is growing rapidly. So is the need for electrical and electronic goods. These devices contain all kinds of raw materials, among others valuable metals. Industries get these from metal mines, but more and more they use secondary – recycled – materials. Especially in emerging economies metal recycling has become an important business. A large informal sector has emerged, that employs many workers. They do not always receive proper education nor proper training and protection. 2. This is Sabitri. She disassembles cellphones in Dharavi, India, without protection. It is the only way to help her family. She is pushed to harm the natural environment and her own health! Carlos wanders through the streets of Lima, Peru, in the middle of the night. He illegally collects waste and is seen as a social outcast. Mustafa is only 11 years old. He works at a scrap metal yard near Accra in Ghana. He can’t go to school and it seems as he will never be able to escape the hazardous work-environment. 3. International experts and stakeholders now have decided to tackle these problems! They were brought together by the World Resources Forum, with support from the Swiss Government. They have created the Sustainable Recycling Industries Roundtable and developed the Guidance Principles for the Sustainable Management of Secondary Metals – an ISO process. 4. The five Guidance Principles for improving recycling practices are: (1) Enabling safe, healthy and equitable working conditions, (2) Building local community relations and resilience, (3) Conserving and protecting the environment and natural resources, (4) Improving recovery of secondary metals, and (5) Implementing a sustainable management approach. 5. The Guidance Principles are important because they can also ensure a credible traceability of the recovered metals. Manufacturers of products that contain recycled metals all over the world need solid guarantees that these are sustainably produced. This is good for the economy, the environment and the people. Waste management practices will be improved and living conditions of poor communities will become better. 6. The Guidance Principles offer a gradual approach for implementing the several steps. For example, Sabitri’s boss was given one year – a reasonable period – to identify occupational health and safety risks and to promote improvements. Now he provides the required equipment and facilities to enable safe and healthy working conditions. After having registered as formal collector, Carlos no longer has to roam the streets at night. He will be a proud and respected worker, with a uniform and a future. After joining a program for working children Mustafa can go back to school. He now wants to learn more and help to build up his country. 7. If everybody uses the Guidance Principles then we can all continue enjoying our devices knowing that we are creating a success story. Do you want to be part of this story? You are most welcome to contact us, to learn more about the Guidance Principles and join the Sustainable Recycling Initiative. The report also reveals that 10 years on, African countries that embraced agriculture have seen food production, GDP and nutrition improve. VOA NEWS October 17, 2018 VOA news. I'm Christopher Cruise reporting. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Saudi Arabia's King Salman and met twice with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday to talk about the missing Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi was last seen two weeks ago entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. There have been persistent reports that he was murdered inside the consulate. United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet is urging Saudi Arabia and Turkey to reveal everything they know about the case. Correspondent Lisa Schlein reports for VOA from the high commissioner's office in Geneva. Bachelet is urging both Saudi Arabia and Turkey to conduct a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance. Bachelet says she wants the diplomatic immunity that was bestowed by the 1963 Vienna Convention to be waived for all Saudi officials. The commissioner's spokesman, Rupert Colville, tells VOA that Bachelet wants to make sure a full unimpeded forensic investigation can go forward. The U.S. State Department said Secretary Pompeo made it clear to the Saudis during his meeting that "learning what happened to Jamal Khashoggi is the primary reason" President Trump sent him to Saudi Arabia, and that the matter "is of great interest to the president." Negotiators from North and South Korea along with the U.S.-led United Nations Command met on Tuesday to talk about demilitarizing a section of the heavily fortified border that separates the two countries. China is defending its mass internment of Muslim ethnic minorities, saying it is preventing terrorism by helping them improve their job skills among other things. A senior Chinese official made that argument in a report released Tuesday, which is the latest action in a broad campaign to defend China's internment of ethnic minorities. This is VOA news. The Nigerian government says a second female aid worker kidnapped earlier this year by an extremist Islamic group has been murdered. The women were kidnapped by militants with the Islamic State West Africa Province, a breakaway faction of the Islamic State-affiliated group Boko Haram. New research suggests obesity surgery may dramatically lower the danger of heart attacks and strokes in people with diabetes. Associated Press correspondent Shelley Adler reports. The study tracked about 20,000 severely obese patients with Type 2 diabetes. Those who had weight loss surgery had a 40 percent lower chance of developing a heart attack or stroke in the five years following surgery compared to those who got usual care with diabetes medicines or insulin. For every 1,000 patients in the study who had surgery, there were roughly 20 heart attacks or strokes compared that to 40 such events per 1,000 who got regular care. Other research has shown obesity surgery can reverse and even prevent diabetes. The United States imposed sanctions Tuesday on a network of businesses that officials believe support an Iranian paramilitary force that trains and deploys child soldiers to fight with Iran's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. U.S. [Secretary] Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the network is composed of at least 20 businesses. It's known as the Basij Cooperative Foundation. Mnuchin said it creates shell companies to hide its ownership and control of multibillion-dollar entities that are, he said, "deeply entrenched" in Iran's automotive, mining, metals and banking industries. Major U.S. stock markets made strong gains Tuesday as strong earnings reports encouraged investors. At the close of trading, the Dow and the Standard & Poor's 500 advanced more than 2 percent. The NASDAQ, which is home to many tech stocks, rose nearly 3 percent. On Twitter Tuesday, President Trump called a porn performer that he allegedly had sex with in 2006 "Horseface." Trump has repeatedly denied the accusation. He insulted the actress one day after a federal judge dismissed her defamation lawsuit against him. The woman's attorney replied on Twitter a short while later, writing that "tens of millions of Americans are tired of your attacks on women, especially the ones who you have had sex with while cheating your wives." Trump's then personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid the woman $130,000 in exchange for her silence about the alleged affair in the days before the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Wide of vessel STORYLINE: China announced an iron ore supply deal on Monday with an Australian miner in an apparent effort to push global suppliers to cut prices in deadlocked contract talks. Australia's Fortescue Metals Group will sell China iron ore for 94 US cents per dry metric ton, the state-sanctioned China Iron & Steel Association announced. That is below the price of 97 US cents agreed to with Japanese and Korean mills for this year's supplies and that major suppliers wanted Chinese mills to accept. But the ore quality is lower and the supply is a small fraction of China's huge consumption, undercutting its importance as a basis for prices. Shan Shanghua, Secretary General of China Iron and Steel Association said this agreement with FMG was a 'big step' towards implementing overall price cuts. Shan told Chinese broadcaster, CCTV, "the contract we signed is legally binding, so the company (Fortescue Metals Group) has promised that the price they offer to any Chinese company will remain the same (for each company) this year. I think this is a big step towards creating a universal price, so we reached this agreement." China is trying to use its status as the world's biggest steelmaker and consumer of iron ore to press suppliers for deep price cuts following two years of hikes totalling more than 100 per cent. Major suppliers agreed to a 33 per cent cut with Japanese and Korean mills this year but Beijing wants bigger reductions. China is trying to reduce reliance on the three global producers - Anglo-Australian miners Rio Tinto Ltd., BHP Billiton Ltd. and Brazil's Vale SA - by reaching out to smaller producers and helping to develop mines in Africa. "The deal breaks the market impasse that had enveloped the Chinese iron ore industry and created uncertainty and risk," Fortescue said in a statement. Tensions over the talks have been fuelled by the detention in July of four Rio employees who Chinese state media say are accused of paying bribes to obtain confidential information on China's negotiating stance. The Rio employees were formally arrested last week on charges of infringing trade secrets and bribery. The deal could give a boost to Fortescue, an ambitious newcomer that has built up production despite competition from Rio and BHPB. Fortescue's promised supply is more than half its annual production of about 35 (m) million tons but equal to just 4 per cent of China's consumption last year of about 450 (m) million tons. The steel industry is vital for China's burgeoning export business. http://goldstocktrades.com/blog What an exciting week for precious metals and junior mining investors? Black swans happen all the time and we wait positioned for those inevitable volatile events. This week we are witnessing major changes to the global diplomatic stage. As President Trump of the USA was eating a candlelight dinner with Chinese President Xi after a few drinks he turned on the TV for a nice display of missile launches against Syria's Assad. This is a message to both Putin and Xi that he means business. Unfortunately, what Trump may not realize is that the Russians and Chinese control our domestic supply of clean energy through the supply of rare earths from China and Uranium from Russia. At any time they can squeeze the supply from China or Kazakhstan forcing the EU, Japan and US to grovel for these critical metals. Meanwhile, the Chinese and Russians are manipulating their currencies lower causing major trade deficits. The cheap commodities comes at a huge cost as our major mining and manufacturing centers in North America have been shuttered over the past 3 decades. Another major concern is that the US is unable to keep up with the cybersecurity issues from China and Russia where there has been breaches into banks and government offices. Its ridiculous we use to be the leader in high tech and mining. The rare earths are a US invention during a time of war coming out of the Manhattan Project. Unfortunately, our top technologies and mines were sent overseas unable to compete with China's slave labor and complete disregard for the environment. Its time we take our rare earth industry back and become a leader in mining and manufacturing once again. We can not sell our birthright for a pot of soup. How much longer will China control our rare earths? How long will our military and manufacturers be held hostage by the Chinese? Trump should say to Xi that the era of selling out the American middle class is over. We will mine and manufacture our own rare earths and restart our uranium mines right here in the North America. There are hearings in Washington DC to the Senate on this issue and I believe more will come out of this as their has been legislation introduced called the Metals Act. In the bill it discusses developing a secured supply chain for critical metals needed for our national defense. Last night all those missiles require rare earths to guide them. How can our military be dependent on the Chinese for these rare earths that go into fighter jets, drones, missiles...etc. We've seen a huge military buildup in the South China Seas. Any spark of hostility between China, North Korea and one of our allies and the rare earths can spike again. You see the rare earth prices lie dormant for years but there could be another spike like 2010. Maybe even greater this time as the Chinese are really running out of their own rare earths and need to look abroad. Take a look at one of the few rare earth survivors Commerce Resources $CCE.V $CMRZF which has been around since 2005. Its had a few runs in the past when rare earth prices took off and it may be ready to move again if investors look towards rare earths once again. There are not many rare earth companies left, but Commerce has survived because of the support of the Quebec government and the world class grades. The issue is infrastructure at it is in Northern Quebec not metallurgy or grade. However, the Quebec Government appears to be taking an interest leading the last financing. I hope this could be the beginning of major support to get rare earth mining started again in Quebec. Some of the other companies Resources Quebec invested in is Stornoway Diamond where they helped finance a long haul road. This support could be a game changer for Commerce. Plus they are looking into wind power which other mines up in Northern Quebec use such as Glencore and Debeers. I would like to highlight a little unknown fact about Commerce in that they have a binding MOU with Glencore. Commerce's deposit will have also flurospar which mostly comes from China so there is some great possibilities with this 12 year old company trading at lows. It may grow up soon with the Quebec investment and have some positive news going forward. I hope by the time its bar mitzvah at 13 it will have matured to a higher level. Disclosure: I own shares and warrants in Commerce Resources and they are a website sponsor which means I have a conflict of interest as I have been compensated. Please be aware this is an advertisement and not financial advice. I am not a financial advisor. This contains forward looking statements which may not come to fruition. Remember junior mining is risky and one can lose his entire investment. Buyer Beware of the conflict of interest and do your own due diligence.

Recent metals and engineering production figures released by Statistics South Africa shows that the industry remains in trouble, with production declining by nearly 7 per cent in the first quarter compared with the same period in 2015. More than 11 000 jobs were lost in the sector last year, and we've also seen the closure of Highveld Steel, historically the country's second-biggest steel mill. Joining CNBC Africa to discuss the challenges and the outlook for the sector is Henk Langenhoven, Chief Economist at the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation, and Finweek Contributor, Ciaran Ryan.

A deadly blast shook a neighbourhood of the Thai capital Bangkok in early April, killing at least seven people. The bomb turned out to be from the 1940s, when Allied forces dropped thousands of explosives in the country which was then occupied by Japan. It was dug up at a nearby construction site, then sold off as scrap. Workers were taking it apart with a blowtorch when it detonated. It was the first such incident in Bangkok, and police are now taking steps to ensure it will be the last. Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler reports from Bangkok.
