Canada's Tar Sands is the third-largest proven crude oil reserve in the world behind Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. In 2011 it was believed the reserve amounted to 170.2 billion barrels of oil, or about 11% of total global oil reserves. But the development of Canada's Oil Sands is concerning environmentalists for several reasons, not least the fact that producing "tar oil", or "sand oil" as it's also known, releases three times the volume of greenhouse gas emissions as conventional oil. Environmental devastation of the land, water, and air - the largest industrial energy project in the world is extracting crude oil from bitumen found beneath the pristine boreal forest of Alberta, Canada. Effecting a land mass equivalent in size to Florida or England, Both industry and government are putting money before the health and security of its people and the environment. Tar sands take 3 barrels of water to process every barrel of oil extracted. Ninety percent of this water becomes so toxic that it must be stored in tailing ponds. Unfortunately these ponds regularly leach pollution into the third largest watershed in the world. Water depletion, exploitation, privatization and contamination has become one of the most important issues facing humanity this century. Check out my other video on water issues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMmpg35Bym0 and see my other videos to learn about the dark side of fossil fuels. NOTE: Although this video shows an up-close look at the blasting process, NEVER go near an active surface mine or blast site without Federal training and permission. FYI, the white bags are Emulsified Ammonium Nitrate. The read cap is TNT and the silver rod that is connected to it by the yellow wire is the blasting cap, it's what ignites the shot. The white pebbles that are emptied into the blast holes by the powder trucks are the main explosive- "ANFO" or Ammonium Nitrate, which is a mixture of fertilizer and diesel fuel. Once the holes are filled with explosives, rock fines or "stemming" is pushed back in the holes and packed down to keep the explosives under pressure. After all the holes are loaded and rigged up, it's time for the fireworks! And remember kids, don't try this at home! Want to see more Blasting? Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well. Now fill in all the rooms in the house with 400 tons of bitumen-laden sand and rock, and that's what it's like to be in one of the haulers at Suncor's oil sands mine in Alberta, Canada. Operating these huge trucks is just one of the well-paying jobs associated with oil sands. Research indicates that fully developing Canadian oil sands would create 80,000 direct or indirect U.S. jobs by 2020 and more than 500,000 by 2035. In northern Alberta, Canada, tons of oil sands are being extracted from the ground every day to produce a thick, gooey form of petroleum. Fort McMurray, the city at the center of oil sands mining, has seen a huge influx of people moving to the area for jobs in or related to the oil sands industry. The proposed Keystone XL pipeline would create an easier way for this oil to be transported from Alberta to refineries on Texas's Gulf Coast. However, many environmental groups oppose oil sands production because of the high amount of greenhouse gases the production creates, and the U.S. Government has yet to approve the pipeline.
