Caterpillar has extensive experience in the design of roof supports for specific mining conditions. Cat Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) roof supports allow mining of seams seams thicker than 6 meters (20 feet). Following a conventional cut with a shearer to about 3 m (9.8 ft) the roof supports move forward and allow the caving of the top coal behind the roof supports a second conveyor mounted gob-side. Following an underground fire, the Daw Mill colliery was closed in March 2013. Since then work has been underway to put the fire out and make the site safe, while also removing all of the above ground structures. A major part of this work has involved filling in the 2 mineshafts, which required a specially engineered cover plate to be constructed. This work has been undertaken by ECS Engineering Services in conjunction with JMC on behalf of the Coal Authority. Under normal conditions, a mineshaft would be decommissioned by removing all the underground equipment in a controlled manner using carefully scheduled plans. However, in this case the mine had to be evacuated as soon as the fire broke out and it has not been safe for anyone to re-enter since. As a result, a different approach has been devised, whereby the operation to seal the two shafts is completed purely from work carried out on the surface. Daw Mill mined a five metre thick seam of coal known as the Warwickshire Thick, with 2 shafts extending down to approximately 550m along with an inclined drift, which was used to convey the coal out of the mine. Now that the mine has been closed, the initial priorities are to extinguish the underground fire by cutting off the air supply and isolating the mine water from the local aquifer. In fact, the two tasks will be accomplished simultaneously since the mineshafts will need to be closed to remove the oxygen supply to the fire and in doing so material that is used to fill the mineshafts will include two carefully positioned clay plugs that will keep the mine water separate from the aquifer. The specifications for the various materials to be used and location of the clay plugs has been approved by the Environment Agency, which has a responsibility for the local water supplies... The first of this video I shot while touring an underground coal mine museum in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia back in 2008. The second part of the video was filmed recently in Stellarton, NS where Pioneer Coal is strip mining the old MacGregor and Albion mine site. There are five seams of coal here the thickest being The Foord seam at about 45 feet in thickness. All five seams have been previously mined via the old school method as described in this video. The song is a remake of Neil Youngs 1972 hit song Old Man and was rewritten and performed by Redlight King. Hope you enjoy the show.

The Chasnalla mining disaster was a disaster that happened on 27 December 1975 in a coal mine in Chasnalla near Dhanbad in the Indian state of Jharkhand. An explosion in the mine followed by flooding killed 372 miners. When a roof of coal caved in, 7 million imperial gallons (32,000 m3) of water per minute flooded into the mine. The miners were trapped under a mountain of debris and drowned when the water surged into the mine. The Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO), which owned the mine, said it conformed to international standards. The film Kaala Patthar depicts the tragedy. Shaheed Smarak was built in the memory of the victims. Mining operations can occur during a long period of time (from several years to several decades) and in order to keep the mining operations running, water has to be constantly removed from the mine sites when needed. After the mine is closed, which happens when its operational life ends, the maintenance systems stop. Also, the dewatering systems cease to operate. Without any kind of work towards dewatering, the closed mines tend to get flooded with surface and groundwaters in the lower levels and mined spaces, if there is not a drainage adit present. The flooding process of an open-pit or underground mine can take from a several months period to more than a decade. The time it takes for a mine to get flooded depends on factors such as quantity of open space in the mine, availability of infiltration water and on the nature of flooding - it can be uncontrolled, controlled or monitored.

The Stellarton mine is an open pit coal mine located in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. It is a truck and shovel operation owned and operated by Pioneer Coal Limited. Pioneer Coal started open pit mining here in Stellarton back in 1996 and is in the final phase after extracting coal from 5 seams of coal at this location. The remnants of abandoned tunnels from underground mining can be seen on the pit walls. Stellarton has a 200 year history of pick and shovel mining that is evident at this site. The end of the era is near as Pioneer Coal will be ending it's operations here and starting their reclamation of the area. Most of the area was unusable due to sinkholes and abandoned bootleg mine shafts before Pioneer Coal mined the area. The coal is mined from 2 seams that range from 5 to 15 feet thick in the Fort Union formation. The coal seams worked in the South Yorkshire Coalfield lie mainly in the middle coal measures. These are a series of mudstones, shales, sandstones, and coal seams laid down during the Carboniferous period about 350 million years ago. The total depth of the strata is about 1.2 kilometres. The list of coal seams that follows starts at the shallowest seam and proceeds downwards with the outcrops occurring progressively further west until the deepest coal seam, the Silkstone Seam which outcropped at the western edge of the coalfield. The first part of this video shows some of the old coal mine shafts at a local strip mine were they are mining the coal. There are five seams of coal that are being mined, all with old workings running through them. The sinkhole in the video show what happens when a roof collapses in the old tunnels deep under ground. The pictures at the end of the video shows what a sinkhole looks like side on when one of the old tunnels caved in underneath the high wall at the strip mine operation. These cave ins happened in the Foord seam which is 45 feet thick and have some large tunnels running through it.
