Handling Explosives in Underground Mines

15:02
http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/Works/coversheet1870.html "Handling Explosives in Underground Mines” is about underground miners dealing with both creation and destruction in a typical day. Though explosives are safer than ever before, caution is still needed when dealing with such a powerful force. This video teaches new miners basic safety rules to keep from hurting themselves or others while handling explosives.

A coal mine on fire since 20 years

04:20
A village in Jharkhand continues to be engulfed by noxious fumes coming from a coal mine fire as high as three floors nearby. Kujju-Collieries Mines in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand has been burning continuously for 20 years now, putting lives of nearly 4,500 residents in danger. “The fire has been burning since before 2000, but it was small. But when Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, opened the mines the fire came in contact with air and has constantly been spreading” says Lakhan, who works at the coal mines. The residents of the village are constantly inhaling the smoke and toxic fumes such of carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide that constantly emanates out of the earth. “Residents here complain of respiratory and skin problems, constant head aches and many other ailments. But where can we go?” Lakhan tells Video Volunteer correspondent Basanti Soren. People here are also concerned, as the coal fire slowly spreads beneath the ground, threatening to open the surface and collapse land the very land they live on. However, the residents, mostly marginalized community of workers, have no source of employment apart from coal mines and no place else to go. “You think anyone wants to die like this? But we are poor people with nowhere to go. The government tells us to move, but is not making any arrangements for us either,” says Kishore Singh, a resident there. He further claims that CCL has been taking half-hearted measures to control this ecological and human disaster. He says, “CCL wants to just do a patch up work and put an end to this problem. But unless they cut the chunk of coal the fire will continue spreading – across the highway, railways and our homes.” Coal contains many trace elements, such as arsenic and mercury, which are dangerous to the environment. Coal also has traces of radioactive elements such as uranium, thorium, and other naturally-occurring radioactive isotopes which if released into the environment may lead to radioactive contamination. Though in small percentage, if enough coal is burned these substances are released, paradoxically resulting in more radioactive waste than nuclear power. Jharkhand has been home to many of India’s largest coal mines, but unknown to many it is also home to one of the longest burning coal fire in the world. Jharia, a coal mine in Jharkhand has been on fire since a century. Help the residents of the Kujju Collieries escape the ecological and human disaster before it is too late. Call Mr. M.K. Mishra, the general manager of Kujju Colliary on +91 8987785011 and inform him about the coal mine fire which has been lit since 20 years.

Hazelwood Open Cut Coal Mine Fire Smokes Morwell (Morwell Open Cut Mine is Still Burning)

02:02
Hazelwood Open Cut Coal Mine Fire Smokes Morwell - Morwell Open Cut Mine is Still Burning Will You Survive a Disaster! http://finditwithusonline.com/FamilySurvivalCourse Two weeks after the Hernes Oak fire and the Morwell grass fire and Hazelwood open cut coal mine fire still burns and smokes out the Morwell Township. Residents in some parts of Morwell have had to leave for health reasons. Even a couple of primary schools are not operating, opting to move young students to other schools sites out of the town. Ash from the coal fire drops over most of the town each and every day. In this video I have put together a few different shots to give you an idea on how bad the smoke is. Not to mention that the carbon monoxide levels are high and the smell of the smoke creeps into the house and stays in your clothes. I have a friend with an in ground pool who is forever cleaning it, added costs he did not need being only within a short distance for the mine. Every day we are getting warnings about the air quality, to stay indoors or leave the area. I hope that the fire services and the mine management can get this mine fire out ASAP! Below is a breakdown of what we saw from each photo. This view of the Hazelwood open cut coal mine is right next to the Princess Freeway where the smoke plumes are the thickest. Looking South, East over the Hazelwood Morwell open cut coal mine. View from the Princess Freeway looking South, West over the Hazelwood open cut coal mine. West view along the Freeway of the smoke blowing over the road. South, West view from the freeway over the Hazelwood open cut coal mine. Looking West next to the coal mine, view along the Freeway where the smoke gets thicker. Smoke is so thick here; it interferes with the cameras focus. Looking from Mac Donald's Track Hernes Oak you get a better idea of how much smoke is still coming up out of the Hazelwood Open Cut mine. In the center of town on the south side the smoke causes visibility problems along with ash particles. On low wind or no breeze days the smoke fills the streets of Morwell. On these days it is hard to see more than 50 meters ahead in some parts of the town center. As the smoke rises when the sun is out it shows a yellow glow on the ground and through the smoke. We only go up to the shops for short periods and a few people are now wearing dust masks to help filter out the smoke. Dissected Black Lung, Lung Disease and Coal Power

02:00
According to the United Mine Workers Of America, black lung is contracted by “prolonged breathing of coal mine dust.” It is an incurable, yet preventable disease. In 1969, the U.S. Congress implemented coal industry reforms to help eradicate the disease, which has since fallen from inflicting 7.7 percent of coal miners between 1968-1980 to 2.6 during the first decade of this century. China now finds itself at an earlier junction in this story, as coal production has surged but health and safety reforms and oversight are lagging. A 2013 study by Shantou University Medical College in southern China found that about six percent of Chinese coal workers had black lung between 2001 and 2011. Polluting and Poisoning The Planet -- The Gift pt 1

18:30
Lorne Greene narrated and Skitch Henderson, the band leader from Johnny Carson's Tonight Show did the music for this US Interior Department film that celebrated the natural environment and the cities. Rocket launches and smog. What are the costs or our growth. An early call to take better care of the planet. Belching smoke from factories, polluted rivers, are juxtaposed to pristine vistas. Strip mining for coal and the waste left behind. Polluted rivers and chemicals sprayed on crops. Massive garbage dumps with hungry seagulls. Rivers with signs, "unsafe for swimming." Oil derricks off the coast. Garbage barges. We've done a lot of harm. S107

M/S View from inside the mine, the sound of an explosion in the background SOT, Miner (Russian): "Am I a terrorist?! I fucking live in Donetsk. I am not a terrorist. And the fact that I have relatives here… We are working here. While you were standing on Maidan, we were working here hard. You are Maidan. Who did you give the power to? The same oligarchs. We rose a bit, and Donbass continues what Maidan started." W/S Mine W/S People walking around near the mine C/U Sign at the mine entrance W/S Mine entrance SCRIPT Miners from the Zasyadko mine took cover at in Donetsk Thursday after the mine they worked at was subject to shelling. An unknown number of miners were injured as shelling hit the mine, where a crew of 103 miners were coming off their working shift. Resulting injuries were caused mainly by smashed glass. In order to avoid the shelling, the miners fled to another shaft of the mine, only for shelling to begin hitting near that part of the facility. Describing his experience, one miner said that he and his colleagues ran to the basement for cover, but then the windows shattered, hurting their feet. His colleague stated that he is not a terrorist, but a hard worker who continued to work hard while others "were standing on Maidan." Reflecting on the outcomes of Maidan the miner expressed a belief that the protest left the same oligarchs in power, requiring "Donbass to continue what Maidan started." The Ukrainian army continue to shell the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, with 11 people reportedly killed Thursday. Over 2,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in April. The Next Day of the Morwell Fire - Hazelwood Open Cut Mine Smokes Will You Survive a Disaster! http://finditwithusonline.com/FamilySurvivalCourse See more photos of the Gippsland Fires here: http://www.pinterest.com/dazcan/gippsland-fires-2014/ The photos in this video are from the day after the "Morwell Fire on Sunday 2014-02-09". The photos were taken by my son with his Samsung Galaxy S4 mobile phone. We see that the grass fires that Started in the hill side of Hernes Oak have now jointed up with the Morwell fire. The grass fires move into the Hazelwood open cut mine and make take some time to put them out. Being a coal mine and coal usually under the ground the fire can easily travel underground. The pictures show where the fires have moved along the West side of Morwell and there are still spot fires that have not been put out yet. There is a new spot that is on the verge of getting into some bush land and you will see a helicopter dropping water on this new outbreak. Morwell - Hazelwood Mine Fire Ash (If the Smoke Doesn't Get You the Ash Will)

05:29
Morwell - Hazelwood Mine Fire Ash A day in the life of the Morwell Hazelwood mine fire as ash particles blanket the city! We have been struggling with the hazardous issue of the local Hazelwood mine fire from February 2014. It has been just an ordeal with daily smoke and ash reports on the radio. The smoke has had an effect on a number of residents over the town. It has especially hit those that are on the South side of Morwell, only a couple of kilometres from the mine. We are about four and a half to five kilometres from the Hazelwood mine fire and have copped a little less of the smoke, but not the ash. They say the smoke is really bad for you, possibly containing mercery, arsenic, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. We know of a few friends and their family members that have been affected by high levels of CO. Some of them were sent straight to hospital with reads of six! The smoke is one thing but the ash is the other, as ash can also get into your lungs, eyes and digestive system. What are the health effects of these two factors, time will only tell. Having a chat with a Paramedic while having our CO levels checked, they even said that the proactive masks that have been handed out, will still let the fine particles of ash in as they do not completely seal on your face. The best advice from the Paramedic was if you don't have to be here, "leave" get away if you can. The photos in this video will give you an idea of what we have experienced from the North side of Morwell. For those who are right next to the mine it is far worse than this. I can understand why our follow residents feel as though they are not getting any assistance. The assistance that has been offered, only applies to the disadvantage as this stage! "Coal Ash" - Citizens Against Laredo Landfill

01:00
This is Coal ash – the waste left after coal is burned. It contains arsenic, mercury, lead, hexavalent chromium and over a dozen other heavy metals. . Poisons in coal ash are blowing, spilling and leaching into air, land and drinking water, posing an acute risk of cancer and neurological effects as well as many other negative health impacts on adults and children. Coal ash is the second-largest form of industrial waste in the country, and maybe most dangerous to contain and difficult to clean up. Just ask the people of Kingston, Tennessee, devastated by coal ash in 2008. Or Milwaukee, where coal ash slid into Lake Michigan . Or Dan River, North Carolina, where coal ash drained into their river. Now the dump developer is trying to bring that here! We don’t need a toxic dump. We don’t want it. Join us and let’s stop it. http://nolaredodump.com

Take action now - add your name to a letter direct to the Northern Territory Chief Minister asking him to stick to his commitment to close McArthur River Mine by October 1 if the company fails to pay an increased rehabilitation bond to clean up the river! Sign here: http://ecnt.org.au/clean-up-mcarthur-river-chief-minister-giles/ Glencore’s open pit lead and zinc mine in the bed of the McArthur River is 50km south of the town of Borroloola. The river, controversially diverted around the expanding mine pit, is the lifeblood of the Gulf of Carpenteria. Residents, tourists and recreational fishers eat the river’s abundant fish, and local pastoral stations and communities rely on its freshwater. Last year the mine’s waste rock dump caught fire due to reactive chemistry. The mine’s Independent Monitor warned, if not fixed, major acid metalliferous drainage problems would leach sulphuric acid into surrounding waterways. The mine’s leaking tailings dam was found to be at risk of collapse and in 2014 high levels of lead were found in local fish stocks and 400 cattle had to be destroyed after the Department of Mines and Energy found cattle contaminated with lead after accessing a contaminated creek on the McArthur River Mine site. Glencore is in breach of its operating conditions, continuing to discharge contaminated water in the McArthur River at double allowable limits. In response to revelations of major risks posed by its reckless mining activities, Glencore has so far refused to pay an increased rehabilitation bond to ensure site clean up. Freedom of Information requests by the McArthur River’s Aboriginal Traditional Owners have revealed internal NT Government memos contained warnings that Glencore’s actions would have ‘catastrophic consequences’ for downstream environment and communities. These warnings have been ignored by the NT Government. The NT Government has issued a warning that without a commitment to fund rehabilitation by an October 1 2015 deadline it may withdraw Glencore's authority to mine. McArthur River region Traditional Owners and the local community are calling on the NT Government to ensure Glencore pays for the comprehensive clean up and transition to a post-mining phase of operations to protect the river and local communities from the company’s reckless actions. Sulphur mining in Indonesia: Harvesting the Devil's Gold

00:12
When you think that your life is tough, think about these people. World’s most dangerous job: coal miners. These miners suffer from poisoned lungs and burned skin. Continuous exposure to this noxious environment leaves the miners with shortened life spans. Many die before they reach 40. And more than six dozen miners have died in the last four decades due to a sudden emission of poisonous gases through the crater’s fissures. From these active volcano, the miners carry 90kg loads of solidified sulphur up 200 metres out of the crater. And all of these for less than USD10/day. Sulfur mining started in Kawah Ijen in East Java, Indonesia in 1968 and it remains the only sulfur mine in the world where the yellow mineral is still being quarried manually. Each day, about 350 men from the surrounding villages take the dangerous path that run down from the rim of the crater into the womb of the volcano 1.5 km below to harvest the devil’s gold (the abundance of sulfur in volcanic regions had earned it that sobriquet, associating it with the devil and hellfire). A green lake with 1 km radius (the largest volcanic lake on planet Earth) sits at the base of the volcano amid a smoky aura of bizarre beauty. But while it looks like steam, the smoke that billows from the volcano’s inner slopes is actually highly concentrated sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gases. These miners work amid these toxic fumes, which are 40 times the tolerable human limits. The miners work with little protective gear (which they can ill afford) in a poisonous environment that can cause irreparable damage to their lungs and reproductive systems. It can also singe their eyes, burn their throats, and dissolve their teeth. The Ijen volcano emits gases through fumaroles in the southeast side of the crater. In 1968 local miners capped these fumaroles and channelized the gases through a network of ceramic pipes down to barrels, where it escapes and condenses instantly. The miners pry out chunks of the solidified mineral with rods and stones. The miners usually take two trips a day inside the volcano, which entails a total 6 km hike up and down the almost perpendicular path and another 10 km from the rim to the roadhead. In each trip, the miners carry 70-80 kg of sulfur in wicker baskets on their shoulders. Lugging such heavy loads often results in deformed spines and bent legs. Sulphur is used for matches, fertilisers, bleached sugar

Project CBD + Smoke Signals 2012 Tour w/Martin Lee 2 of 5

08:15
Cutting edge science reveals an element inside the Cannabis plant called Cannabidiol -- CBD (a non-psychotropic element) is proven to be highly efficacious in treating Traumatic Brain Injuries, Post Traumatic Stress as well as a plethora of other ailments and diseases. The reduced psychoactivity of CBD-rich Cannabis may make it an appealing treatment option for patients seeking anti-inflammatory, anti-pain, anti-anxiety and/or anti-spasm effects without disconcerting euphoria or lethargy. Scientific and clinical studies indicate that CBD could be effective in easing symptoms of a wide range of difficult-to-control conditions, including: rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, alcoholism, PTSD, epilepsy, antibiotic-resistant infections and neurological disorders. CBD has demonstrated neuroprotective effects, and its anti-cancer potential is currently being explored at several academic research centers in the U.S. and other countries. Listen to Martin Lee, author of Smoke Signals (www.SmokeSignalsTheBook.com) and co-founder of Project CBD (www.ProjectCBD.org) lecture on August 21, 2012 at the Phinney Neighborhood Center. Hosted by Collective Health, a Seattle medical marijuana dispensary, specializing in rich CBD medicine (www.YourCollectiveHealth.com) Project CBD - ...a non-profit educational service dedicated to promoting and publicizing research into the medical utility of cannabidiol (CBD) and other components of the Cannabis plant. It was conceived by two journalists who have been covering the medical marijuana movement / industry in the pages of O'Shaughnessy's. We think the reintroduction of CBD-rich Cannabis into the grassroots supply warrants special focus. We support the Society of Cannabis Clinicians' effort to collect, aggregate and publish data from patients to determine patterns of efficacy—or lack of efficacy. Smoke Signals- A panoramic, character-driven narrative that explains why marijuana affects so many aspects of American life, Smoke Signals chronicles the development of a grassroots movement that began in the 1960s and grew into a widespread populist revolt against prohibition. The great leap forward came in 1996, when California voters shocked the political and medical establishments by passing Proposition 215, which authorized doctors to approve marijuana use by patients. Similar laws have since been enacted in 16 other states and the District of Columbia. Published in August 2012 by Scribner (a division of Simon & Schuster) Smoke Signals describes the burgeoning of a multi-billion-dollar industry and exposes collusion by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to undermine the will of the electorate. "The big, untold story," according to Lee, an award-winning investigative journalist, "is that there have been more than a million documented medical users and no deaths and no pattern of health problems attributable to medical marijuana." Smoke Signals draws attention to underreported scientific breakthroughs, including the discovery of a non-psychoactive component of marijuana, cannabidiol (CBD), which protects the brain against alcohol poisoning, stimulates adult stem cell growth, prevents the onset of diabetes, and shrinks malignant tumors — without causing a "high." By mining the plant's treasure trove of active ingredients, medical researchers have developed promising treatments for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, chronic pain, and many other conditions that are beyond the reach of conventional cures. "It's not just marijuana that got prohibited," Tod Mikuriya, MD, a principal character in Smokes Signals, used to point out, "it's the truth about history." Martin A. Lee's new social history of marijuana goes a long way towards restoring the prohibited truth.

Burning Ghost Town In Centralia, Pennsylvania| Animals Amazing Wildlife

Burning Ghost Town In Centralia, Pennsylvania| Animals Amazing Wildlife. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7ya69IWl-GLbhln6bt7B3gIf you thought the horror movie Silent Hill was fiction, you should visit Centralia, Pennsylvania. This abandoned ghost town has had a fire burning underground for over 50 years! Due to constant spontaneous combustion and oxidation, this mysterious old coal mine is completely out of control! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "Most SHOCKING Biological Weapons Ever!" video here: https://youtu.be/W0Yli9y7YAk Watch our "Top 5 Most Mysterious and Powerful Secret Societies" video here: https://youtu.be/0Lu4Uvc5EhA Watch our "DEADLIEST Ship Disaster In History!" video here: https://youtu.be/8cNBVZMoalc Town literally burning for more than 50 years! There is a small town in Pennsylvania that has been burning since 1962. That’s over 50 years! What? How is that even possible? So the issue is that Centralia, Pennsylvania is on top of some of the biggest coal deposits in the world. In the 1800s miners blasted tunnels underground and then abandoned them about 100 years later. No one really knows what exactly caused the fire but the strongest theory is that some burning trash from a landfill accidentally lit the coal near an old entrance to the mine. Yeah this isn’t fog, it’s smoke. Since sometimes coal deposits are under a lot of pressure, it can even ignite without a flame. The oxygen from the empty tunnels created the perfect conditions for the fire to spread. The flames started going deeper and deeper into the surrounding area as more coal burned, and the tunnels continue to take oxygen down from the surface. It is now in a vicious, fiery cycle that is now about 300 feet deep. Coal burns slow and steady and can take ages to burn out. As long as there is enough heat, fuel, and oxygen to keep it going, there’s nothing you can do. They actually tried to put it out by drilling holes into the mine and pouring wet sand down to block off the air supply but it didn’t work. It might not seem like such a big deal since the fire is underground but it really is. The 1000 residents probably didn’t think that is was a big deal either until sulfurous fumes and carbon monoxide almost suffocated everyone in their home. The underground fire fractured the ground making sink holes all over the place. A 12-year-old almost fell in one in 1981. The roads are also affected and have smoke coming out of them! The last time they tried to put it out was in the 1980’s but since then everyone’s just given up. Today about 12 people live in Centralia and it’s a very popular destination for graffiti artists. Check out this artwork all over the road. It also draws UFO seekers... The fire covers 6 square miles and spreads 75 feet every year. While this might seem like a freak accident, these kind of fires are actually pretty common. There are mine fires burning in Wyoming, Australia, Germany, and many other parts of the world. India and China have the most serious problems with hundreds of abandoned mines all over the country. Coal mine fires can burn for centuries and it is estimated that the Central fire could burn for another 250 years!
Coal miner victims commemorated on 23th year of accident

02:14
The 263 miners who were killed in an accident in Black Sea province of Zonguldak 23 years ago were commemorated on March 3 by families and their colleagues who survived the incident. An explosion in the Kozlu mine, operated by the state Turkish Coal Institute (TTK), claimed the lives of 263 miners on March 3, 1992, in one of the worst mine disasters in Turkey’s history. Mustafa Bozacıoğlu, 60, one of the miners who survived the accident, said nobody supported them after the incident and they had to seek their rights on their own. “First there was a black smoke and then a fire and explosion. We could not see anything due to the dust. May God not let us see such things again,” Bozacıoğlu said. A minute of silence was held in the mine before the day’s work started on March 3 and verses from the Quran were read for the souls of the victims. General Mine Workers Union (GMİS) head Şaban Kaptan Eyüp Alabaş criticized the authorities for failing to take action against the subcontractors in mines, despite numerous warnings. The subcontractor system is seen as one of the main problems in the mining sector in Turkey, giving miners few rights and limiting workplace security standards. “We must protect each other and comply with workplace health and safety rules in order not to have such accidents anymore,” said current TTK General Manager Burhan İnan during a commemoration ceremony in the Kozlu district of Zonguldak, while claiming that it is down to miners to monitor their colleagues. “Mining is a very dangerous job. This is also stated in the law. Miners should monitor their colleagues,” İnan said. Turkey does not have a good mining record, with accidents in recent years claiming many lives. Eighteen miners were killed after they were trapped underground following a flood at a coal mine in Ermenek on Oct. 28, 2014. This was only six months after 301 miners died at a mine in Soma in the Aegean region on May 13, 2014, in the worst ever industrial accident in Turkish history.

Living in the shadow of fear at Bukit Koman

11:53
The little village of Bukit Koman in Raub, Pahang, is the sort of place where people stop to have conversations with each other. Watching from the sidelines of a small, clean and airy coffeeshop, a man stops by a sundry store for a loaf of bread and stays for the length of time it takes to smoke a cigarette and then some. The people here are a vociferous lot, but good-naturedly so, calling out to each other from across the street, inquiring mostly after each other's health. It is a grudgingly cliched picturesque place, which, in better times, would look perfect on touristy pamphlets. Black Markets, White Markets: A False Narrative

32:25
In this talk, Andreas picks apart the false dichotomy of 'rainbow' market types (white, grey, black, red, blue), the underlying moral assumptions in these classifications, and why Bitcoin's colorblindness matters in a world where state 'justice as a service' (JaaS) is not only jurisdictionally relative and contradictory on a global scale, but often faulty and destructive within its own borders. CLARIFICATION: At 6:50, I said that it was illegal to use bitcoin in to escape Venezuela's currency collapse. This is somewhat incorrect. There is still no law in Venezuela that is explicitly in favor or against the use of bitcoin itself; Bitcoin's status in Venezuela would be more accurately described as a grey market. Authorities have justified arrests based on accusations of "committing cyber fraud and power theft," or "money laundering" and "financing terrorism." Bitcoin miners are often subject to extortion by local police. Another charge has been "bypassing currency controls," which is what I meant to address in that statement. Mine subsidence project completed in Clearfield Co.

00:23
By: WJAC Web Staff HOUTZDALE, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said Wednesday work has been completed on a mine reclamation project in Clearfield County that should protect more than 150 homes. Officials with the DEP said the $5.6 million project, which took more than two years to complete, stabilized the ground beneath 154 homes to protect them from the threat of mine subsidence. "This critically important project that required two years to complete eases the concerns homeowners had expressed about potential mine subsidence causing thousands of dollars in damage and possibly making their homes unlivable," DEP Deputy Secretary for the Office of Active and Abandoned Mine Operations John Stefanko said in the release. Following several mine subsidence events in Houtzdale, the DEP looked into ways to fix subsidence problems. Crews began exploratory drilling in 2010 to review the subsidence issues. The project was completed by drilling 722 holes and injecting each hole with a cement substance, the DEP said. Hole length ranged from 20 to 70 feet. The work was completed by Enviro Drill of Bridgeville, Allegheny County.

W/S Demonstrators walking away SCRIPT Greece: Chalkidiki villagers suffer police tear gas attacks On Thursday, units from the Greek riot police (MAT) and its anti-terrorism special force (EKAM) clashed with residents from the town of Ierissos and the nearby Skouries mine in north-eastern Greece. Security forces were searching for suspects from an arson attack that took place at the mine on Feb. 17, when approximately 40 masked individuals raided the facilities, torching machinery, vehicles and containers used as offices. Clouds of chemical smoke filled the area around Ierissos, forcing the demonstrators to retreat into the town itself. Residents claim that irritant aerosol weapons were fired at the school, and that a number of children were affected. The police, however, in a statement say that any health problems are more likely related to burning tires used in temporary barricades. Although the police blocked the streets and locals could not reach the school, doctors were allowed into the building to ensure the health condition of the children. The residents of Ierissos applauded the doctors and kept guard of their streets. The gold mine project in the Chalkidiki Peninsula is being developed by Hellas Gold, which is 95 percent owned by Canadian mining group Eldorado Gold Corporation, the world's ninth largest gold producer. The remaining five percent of the mine is owned by Greek magnate George Bobolas through his construction company AKTOR. Bobolas is also a media tycoon with a significant share of the Greek TV and radio market, as well as major newspapers in the country. Eldorado Gold estimates that the Skouries mine may be worth up to $10.9 billion (€8.3bn) at current gold and copper market prices. However, residents of the peninsula say the open pit mine threatens their tourism income and the region's environmental stability including the forest surrounding Ierissos, a rare surviving part of the European primordial forests. The mining site is likely to pollute the peninsula with mercury, arsenic and cyanide in the form of dust and acid rain. On Friday, representatives of the police and the locals met at the advocate's office to try to control the situation. The advocate urged both sides to follow the laws and the constitution. The citizen's lawyers complained about the police brutality, as well as the extreme number of officers deployed in Ierissos.
