Gold mine collapses in Nicaragua, trapping at least 25 miners

00:34
The collapse of a gold mine in Nicaragua on Wednesday killed at least one worker and trapped at least another 25. The miner, who died instantly, was confirmed dead on Thursday. The incident happened at the Bonanza mining project in a sector known as El Comal, at around 10 a.m. but information about the accident spread only in the afternoon, as it is located in a remote area, El 19 Digital reported. The mouth of the mine collapsed after a landslide was triggered by heavy rain, TelesurTv reported. Rescue teams are expected to work through the night to find an alternative route which connects with the tunnel where the miners are trapped to provide them fresh air while they try to bring them out, Univision reported. The death of a second miner for now has still to be confirmed, El 19 Digital reported. The Bonanza project, which is located about 260 miles (420 km) northeast of Nicaragua’s capital Managua, is operated by local firm Hemco and is owned by Colombian company Mineros S.A., Telesur TV reported. According to Hemco’s website, the project produces around 37,300 troy ounces of gold a year.

Rescuers pull trapped workers from collapsed Nicaragua gold mine

01:59
Freelance gold miners trapped by a collapse in a mine in northern Nicaragua are pulled free by rescue crews The first 11 of 24 freelance gold miners trapped by a collapse in a mine in northern Nicaragua have been rescued and crews were working early Saturday to free more, officials said. The men walked out of the mine on their own as their relatives and fellow miners cheered late Friday night, more than 24 hours after a collapse at the El Comal gold and silver mine in the town of Bonanza left them cut off in a mine shaft. Rescued miner Marvin Urbina, 34, said he and some of his fellow miners saw an avalanche of mud and rock coming their way. They stuck to the walls of the mine but at least four of their co-workers were crushed by the mud and rock streaming down the shaft, he said. "I asked God to let me live and he listened to me and now I will serve Him," an emotional Urbina told Channel 6. Interior Vice Minister Carlos Najar said the miners were a bit dehydrated but in good health. "They are coming out little by little, it's a slow process but we want to make sure they can get out safely," Najar told Channel 6 state television. He added that more of the miners are expected to be rescued overnight. The miners were checked by paramedics and taken to a clinic in Bonanza, which is located about 260 miles northeast of Managua. Earlier, authorities said 20 of the 24 miners had been located and had communicated with rescuers at the El Comal mine in northern Nicaragua. Mr Najar did not say how many of the 24 miners they expected to rescue. Hundreds of relatives and fellow miners had gathered to pray outside the mine as rescuers lined up several ladders along a 200-foot long tunnel leading toward where the men were trapped. The mine cuts into the side of a mountain and then goes upward. Commander Javier Amaya of the rescue team said the rescue plan involved groups "of five or 10 miners entering the mine on wooden ladders, tying themselves off and going in until they reach them." Outside the mine, Jorge Hernandez, 25, said he learned his brother was one of the miners trapped while watching television in Nicaragua's capital, Managua. He rushed to Bonanza. "We're praying to God with all of our souls so that my brother and the other men can be rescued alive and well," he said. He added that his brother Michael, 24, moved to Bonanza from Managua last year to work in the mine. It was unclear if he was one of the 11 miners rescued. The gold and silver mine is operated by Colombia's Hemco. The trapped miners are not employees of Hemco, but rather freelancers allowed to work in the company's concession if they sell any gold they find to the firm, mining company spokesman Gregorio Downs said. Downs said the company had warned miners about the danger of working in the El Comal area, especially after two miners died in a rain-caused landslide there last month. "We live by extracting mineral from Hemco. They told us digging here was risky, but sometimes one is willing to risk it for a few more cents," said Absalon Toledo, leader of the informal miners. According to the website of Nicaragua-based Hemco, the company has mined in the North Atlantic municipality since 1995 and employs 532 workers, who process 700 tons of material a day. The company, majority owned by Colombia's Mineros SA, says it produces more than 2,500 pounds (1,150 kilograms, 37,000 troy ounces) of gold a year and is Nicaragua's 12th largest exporter. US President, Donald Trump, has signed an executive order, slapping sanctions on Venezuela’s gold exports. Trump’s national security advisor made the announcement during a speech in Miami, Florida. Venezuela has recently turned to gold to shore up its foreign currency reserves and deal with high inflation and shortages of basic consumer products. The Trump administration has also imposed new sanctions on Cuba for supporting the Venezuelan government and promised additional penalties against Nicaragua. Washington has branded the three countries as a troika of tyranny, which represents oppression and totalitarianism. Eastern Uganda's Busia district is abundant in gold deposits. However its residents, most of them who work in the mines for a living, are anything but rich. COMPACSA Mining Nicaragua - English Version

08:27
COMPACSA, a Junior Nicaraguan Mining Company, is developing a project, called Mina La Flor, which is located within one of its three concessions in the North-West of Nicaragua. Nearby mines such as El Limón, have produced over 3 million ounces of gold since 1941. There are several smaller mines in the area, within and outside the concession. Many of the prospects were originally identified by LAMINEX, a US Based Company, between 1967 and 1975, and reviewed and reported by the world renown geologist Robert Lilljequist. Their 1974 report states that with surface samplings they identified an anomaly of 4,000 feet long by 400 feet wide in the area of La Flor. Also, they report having performed over 11,000 feet of underground perforations, yielding a range of Zero to 0.45 ounces of gold, 70 a 120 gpt of Silver, and 1% to 3% of Copper. COMPACSA has been able to replicate the 1974 exploration results, finding surface samples of up to 24 gpt of gold, and underground results of up to 27 gpt of gold, along with the corresponding Silver and Copper concentrations reported. LAMINEX’s exploration tunnel, has just been found this year by COMPACSA and the laboratory results from INSPECTORATE show that the vein consists on average of 6.2 gpt Au, 80 gpt Ag, and 3.6% Cu. With samples reaching 27 gpt of gold, 237 gpt of Silver and 8.8% of Copper. Currently, COMPACSA is in communication with smelting companies in China, Peru and México, negotiating terms of sale for an average of 2,500 to 10,000 tons of mineral a month. For more information about our project, please contact us through our website www.compacsa.com or call +505-8882-7252. UPDATE JUNE 2016: Two corrections to the info on the video and an update: 1- The company that did the studies in the 70's is out of Europe, not the USA. 2- The concentration of Copper is 0.8%, not 8.0%. The three concessions totalling 27,000 hectares were explored extensively superficially. Several points of interest were studied and the exploration efforts were reduced. We reduced originally to 6,000 hectares as we reduced points of interest to the highest potentials. As our studies continued, we focused further and reduced the concession down to one, with an area of just over 1,000 hectares. At this time, we are in the process of obtaining the environmental permit for exploitation which is required to take the mineral out of the ground.

Peru's dirty gold - TechKnow

23:57
The Amazon rainforest is home to 10 percent of the world's known species, and its ancient trees remove millions of tons of carbondioxide per year from the atmosphere. Its pristine forests, however, are increasingly under threat. The soil underneath some of the rainforests is laced with gold, and each year, thousands of kilometres of the Amazon rainforest are devastated by illegal gold mining. In Peru, where the rainforest covers about 60 percent of the country, illegal mining operations threaten local communities and turn swathes of rainforest into barren waste sites. So what are the consequences of illegal mining for local communities and the ecosystem? What can be done to stop the destruction of the rainforest? Rescuers free 20 miners trapped underground for hours in Nicaragua | BREAKING NEWS - 30 AUG 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperNewsPlanet Rescuers freed 20 workers from a mine in Nicaragua late Friday, dozens of hours after it collapsed and buried them underground, authorities said. Five miners remain trapped in the mine near Bonanza in the northern mountains, first lady Rosario Murillo told El 19 Digital. The nation's first lady also serves as a government spokeswoman. "Right now we are giving infinite thanks to God and the Virgin for having saved from almost certain death 20 brother miners," she said. Since it's collapse on Thursday, they had spent 34 hours trapped in the silver and gold mine. An unknown number of miners escaped and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Shortly after getting trapped, the miners called out for help. Their screams were heard by fellow workers who used a tunnel to get close to where they were trapped, government spokeswoman Milagros Solórzano told El 19 Digital. The nation's civil defense, army and members of the mining company EMCO are collaborating on the rescue, according to the report. The Indigenous Nicaraguans Under Threat

Indigenous Wars (1998): An excellent report that addresses the uncertain future for indigenous Nicaraguans as they fight against their own government and people. Subscribe to journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures An 80% unemployment rate and commercialisation of the Mosquito coast has encouraged a growing trade in Crack cocaine. On a tour of the ghettos of 'Little Miami', multitudes of brothels, crack dens and bars line the streets. The Nicaraguan government is unsympathetic to the natives' pleas for land titles and autonomy of the Atlantic coast. In a desperate attempt to hold on to what is, traditionally, their land, a group of natives, the Miskit Indians, has taken up arms against the government. The authorities respond aggressively with the planting of land mines, a step contrary to an international convention, of which Nicaragua is a signatory. The battle over mining for gold in Marmato

14:00
The town of Marmato, in Central Colombia, sits on top a mountain of gold. Its people have been living off of it for centuries, mining the precious metal through mostly small scale, artisanal operations. But as the country is increasingly relying on its mineral resources to fuel the economy, multinational mining companies have set their sights on places like Marmato to install open air mines that would literally swallow the landscape. According to some estimates, it would take about 20 years to extract all the gold from the mountain, wiping out the town and its 10,000 inhabitants in the process. The imminence of this news weighs heavily on the people of Marmato, who are organizing to fight back and prevent this from happening. Correspondent Toby Muse traveled to the Colombian Andes Mountains to report on this story for Americas Now. At least three bodies have been recovered from the incident in the Cauca department. It is not clear exactly how many people are underneath the rubble, as the mine was operating illegally, according to the BBC. The governor of the Cauca department, Temistocles Ortega, said the accident in the gold mine took place shortly before midnight near Santander de Quilichao. Illegal miners used machinery to open huge holes to extract gold, and a wall on one of them caved in, burying the miners, Ortega said. "So far, three bodies have been recovered and we don't know if there are more victims," he said. Colombian media reports say thousands of tonnes of mud and stones cover the area and specially trained search dogs are looking for survivors. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Protests halt gold mining in El Salvador

Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Canada's Pacific Rim mining company owns all the land around El Dorado in El Salvador - one of the most coveted gold mines in Central America. But the company has been unable to dig in because of resistance from local environmentalists who say that cyanide used in gold mining will contaminate their rivers. The mine is currently shut down because of protests. And the recent murders and death threats against activists in the region have put the spotlight on the gold mining project there. The Big Quake - TechKnow

24:10
The 1,130km stretch of coastline from Vancouver, Canada to Mendocino, California, harbours an underwater threat just over 110km offshore - the seismic fault, Cascadia. Places like Japan, Chile and North America's Pacific Northwest all fall in what's known as subduction zones - ie, where one tectonic plate dives under another. The potential seismic activity from one of these plates 'popping' from on top of the other equates to an entire region affected by earthquake symptoms. The Cascadia Initiative (CI) is a years-long project that has been developed to study the effects of the fault and the two plates responsible for the action: Juan de Fuca and Gorda. From the data collected, it is confirmed that the Cascadia will only cause large magnitude earthquakes, ranging between every 300 to 500 years. The last noted eruption of the Cascadia was in the 1700s, making the Pacific Northwest overdue for the next quake. But alongside the shaking, the movement of the sea floor is also set to generate a tsunami wave that will reach Northwestern shores within minutes of the explosion. Impact studies are under way at Oregon State University, where civil engineer Daniel Cox utilises a wave laboratory to gauge the effect of different sized tsunamis. Replicas of towns based on actual layouts of coastal cities that could be affected by a Cascadia-triggered tsunami are used to collect data that is then input into a computer, simulating potential situations and scanning for the worst areas of damage. The results, even on a small scale, are terrifying, and the fear doesn't lie only in the force of the tsunami waves, but also in the projectiles that get swept up in it, including vehicles or temporary buildings that could crash and, ultimately, obliterate permanent structures. With knowledge of the mass panic caused during evacuation due to natural disasters, even this facet of the event has been mapped out by experts at Oregon State. Combining elements of how the water moves onto land and factoring in human behaviour leads to the conclusion that most people are still unaware of how to react should an event of this large scale arise. How likely is it that there will be a 9.0 magnitude earthquake on the Pacific Northwest within the next 50 years? "Somewhere within one in seven chance within the next 50 years," says Daniel Cox. "These odds are way too high for us to accept. There's too many lives at risk. We have to come up with some better ideas." - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

Eleven miners trapped after Honduran mine collapse

00:43
Eleven miners have been trapped in an illegal gold mine since Wednesday, in the Honduran town of San Juan Arriba, 110 km (70 miles) south of the capital, Tegucigalpa. The men were working in the 80 meter deep mine when a landslide caused the entrance to collapse. Firefighters have been able to communicate with three of the men, but the fate of the other eight is unknown. Lieutenant Manuel de Jesus Reyes, a firefighter from the city of Choluteca, told Reuters that rescuers have been forced to work slowly and carefully to avoid causing another rock slide. For that reason, rescuers are also unable to use heavy machinery to move the massive rocks blocking the mine. The mine has no safety equipment, and no map of its network exists. According to Gerardo Flores, the Honduran manager of Mayan Gold, a U.S. miner based nearby which has been involved in the rescue effort, the men would likely not survive for more than four days without sufficient food and water, and air may be limited air, local television reported. Deputy environment minister Carlos Pineda told local television that the mine had been ordered closed several months ago. Working in the mine can yield $14 USD per day in gold nuggets, three times the average wage in that part of Honduras. According to the BBC, the mayor of the nearby town of El Corpus, Luis Andres Rueda, at least 50 “informal” mines operate in that area.

Eleven people were trapped underground following a coal mine cave-in in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Wednesday, local authorities said. The collapse occurred in a pit of Liujiamao Coal Mine at Shenmu County of Yulin City at around 09:00 Wednesday. At the time of the accident, 49 miners were working underground and 38 of them succeeded in fleeing for life, the county government said. The rescue work is under way. The non-state-run Liujiamao Coal Mine is operated on test run, rescuers said. Children Mining Diamonds in Liberia

02:58
From VOA Learning English, this is the Education Report in Special English.More and more children in Liberia are leaving school to work in diamond mines. Fifteen-year-old Mike Coleman dropped out of school several months ago. He left to search for diamonds in western Liberia to help his parents. The country's Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy says that Liberian diamond mines employ at least 1,500 children. Nora Quae is the head of a Junior High School in western Liberia. She says that more than 200 students, half of the school, dropped out this year to work in the mines. Liberia's unemployment rate is nearly 85 percent. The World Bank estimates that 95 percent of the country's population lives on less than $2 a day. Work in the diamond mines is difficult and dangerous. But the possibility of earning $50 for each diamond is too good for many people to turn down. Employing anyone under the age of 18 in diamond mines is illegal. But many mine operators are willing to hire children who are small enough to fit into the narrow tunnels and tight spaces of mines. Thomas Wleh heads the Liberia Mining Entity in western Liberia. He says a worker's age does not matter to mine owners. And he says the operators do not force children to work for them. But Mr. Wleh says the Ministry of Education should put measures in place to keep students in school. The United Nations Security Council helped ban the mining and export of so-called blood diamonds in Liberia in 2001 during the country's civil war. But the United Nations ended the ban in 2007. The diamond mines are again operating, increasing the demand for young workers. For VOA Learning English, I'm Carolyn Presutti. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 21Feb2013
