Understanding the complex linkages between operational variables at a mine site and the financial performance of that mine is now more critical than ever as operators deal with the slump in commodity prices. Even before the downturn, many of Australia's leading mining companies had started to implement a more structured approach to cost effective decision making across all areas of the mine production. This video highlights Australian mining best practice in both operational cost management and production value maximisation through robust modelling of operational value drivers.

This is the accompanying video for our work "Improving Value Driver Trees to Enhance Business Data Analysis" by Tom Horak, Ulrike Kister, and Raimund Dachselt. We will present the peer-reviewed poster paper at the IEEE VIS 2017 (InfoVis) conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Abstract: In this work, we focus on improving data exploration for the specific multivariate graph application case of value driver trees (VDTs). Based on value drivers and an underlying model, VDTs are used to assess business's performance of companies. Taking into account the specific challenges of VDTs, we present an improved node representation using embedded visualizations as well as interaction concepts for local semantic zooming and simulations or predictions within these trees. The second speaker at Process Mining Camp 2016 was Giancarlo Lepore from Zimmer Biomet, Switzerland. Zimmer Biomet produces orthopedic products (for example, hip replacements) and one of the challenges is that each of the products has many variations that require customizations in the production process. Giancarlo is a business analyst in Zimmer Biomet’s operational intelligence team. He has introduced process mining to analyze the material flow in their production process. In his talk, he explains why it is difficult to analyze the production process with traditional lean six sigma tools, such as spaghetti diagrams and value stream mapping. He compares process mining to these traditional process analysis methods and also shows how they were able to resolve data quality problems in their master data management in the ERP system. Do you want to know what process mining can do in a high-variation production environment? Watch Giancarlo’s talk now! Colorado Springs is best known for its rugged outdoor attractions, but there’s much more to the place than national parks and nature reserves. Southwest of the city, for example, is Cheyenne Mountain and its three peaks, and they have guarded one of the world’s most sensitive secrets for more than half a century. What the government concealed in Cheyenne Mountain would inspire untold speculative chatter, conspiracy theories and works of science fiction. But what was actually hidden there? Well, now we can see for ourselves. The story began in 1961. Under the authority of the Army Corps of Engineers, the Utah Construction & Mining Company was commissioned to make inroads to the mountain and excavate massive tunnels in its slopes. ----------------------------------- STORY LINK: https://www.nollygrio.com Nolan Scully: https://www.facebook.com/nolanscully/ ------------------------------------ CONNECT WITH US: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nollygrionews Become a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/nollygrio On the web: http://www.nollygrio.com For inquiries, please contact: [email protected] ------------------------------------ VIDEO CREDITS: Background Music: Audioblocks: https://www.audioblocks.com Day 7: https://soundcloud.com/day7official Footages: https://www.videoblocks.com ------------------------------------ #nollygrio #nollygriomystery #nollygriodiscovery

Thar will change Pakistan تھر بدلے گا پاکستان A beautiful dedication by Faakhir Alhamdulillah 2017 was a great year. Both mining & power projects are ahead of schedule and below budget. We have sold our entire mining capacity (~4000 MW) to Pakistan’s top investors (Engro, Thal, Hubco, HBL, Liberty, Lucky, Saddiqsons & Arif Habib) and are on our way to produce indigenous power that is the cheapest in Pakistan’s history as the largest private partnership ever with GoS. Yet, we recognise Tharis as the real stakeholders of this project. Our duty is to them. They will receive financial dividend for the lifetime of the project - first time in Pakistani history. Extensive work being done on education, health, livelihood etc. We have pioneered a revolutionary tradition by bringing Thari women from water pitchers to steering of dump trucks. If we can be the biggest public-private partnership by $ value why can’t we do the same in social sector? We can, Inshallah. In 2018, Pakistan will realise the Thar Dream. This year our goal is to transfer the first electron from Thar to the national grid. In 2018 we will also complete relocation of our first village - solar-powered and WiFi-enabled - the best resettlement in Pakistan. Our schools will enroll 5000 students. Our 82 bed hospital will be complete. We will begin work on a technical college and would be close to planting million trees. And throughout ensuring 75% jobs for locally educated Tharis. What can you do? Come & visit Thar. See the change. Contribute. Guide us and pray for us. To celebrate the new year, one of Pakistan’s favourite sons Faakhir has composed a song with lyrics in four different languages - Sindhi, Dhatki, Urdu and Chinese - representing our dream. Enjoy and distribute the song over social media. May Allah help us as we build towards a prosperous and caring Pakistan. Shamsuddin Shaikh, CEO, Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company & Thar Foundation

Although family members of Mohammed Saleh Qayed Taeiman call him a normal sixth grader who was eager to have fun, the US military in January unleashed a deadly drone strike that killed the “al-Qaeda militant” along with two others. Taeiman’s father and brother were in 2012 similarly killed by US strikes, and another brother was wounded in a different attack, dealing multiple blows to the family even before the death of the young boy. With this in mind, RT’s Ben Swann and Reema Abu Hamdieh speak in an exclusive interview with Mohammed’s cousin, Hussein Taeiman. Pervasive data science is becoming a core enabler of business innovation and competition. Given this importance, it's worth examining the context of data science to consider its trajectory and future value. Murli Buluswar, former Chief Science Officer at AIG, speaks with CXOTalk co-hosts Michael Li, CEO of The Data Incubator, and Michael Krigsman Primary challenges around data science for business leaders come from three sources: 1. Business people do not always understand the power and implications of what's possible with data science and machine learning. The impact on business models, operations, and customers can be profound. 2. Lack of available data to feed the machine learning beast. Without historical or other data, machine learning has little value. Aggregating useful data can be expensive and time-consuming. 3. Insufficient talent and resources to create models and set up analyses that can best serve users and customers. Making effective use of data science demands a different kind of thought than traditional analytics; even a culture shift, so it's hard for established organizations to adapt quickly. From the transcript: Murli Buluswar: To build on what you just said, Michael, if you were to contextualize that to insurance, I see the big leap in innovation happening in the next two to three years around this notion of making more granular, real-time decisions with machine learning. By defining data not just in the traditional internal structured terms, but thinking of it in four quadrants: internal / external on one dimension and structured / unstructured on the other dimension. The ability to build machine learning algorithms on these platforms will reshape what humans do with decision-making and judgment and where models harmonize or balance human judgment with machine intelligence. Often, people think of it as an either/or. But if you re-paraphrase machine intelligence as nothing but the collective experience of the institution manifested through data, it brings consistency and granularity to decision-making. That's not to say that it obviates the role of human judgment completely, but it is to say that that balance, that harmony should and will look dramatically different two years, three years from now than it has for the last decade and before that. The next big step-change that I see for this sector as a whole is evolving from a predictor of risk to an actual risk partner that can mitigate outcomes through the power of real-time insights. The most obvious example of that is the role that sensors can play in providing real-time feedback to drivers of vehicles in a way that hopefully reduces risky driving and mitigates the likelihood of accidents. To me, that is the true power of data science in insurance. Not only does it mitigate accidents from happening, or adverse events from happening, but reduces the cost of insurance and expands the reach of protection to a much broader population, both in the developed and developing worlds. To me, that's a beautiful thing if you think about society having a much higher level of financial protection across every aspect of our lives. Michael Li: Think about what's new in data science, that is, why is data science different from or how does data science expand upon things like the actuarial tradition, like statisticians, the quants of yore. We're no longer just using structured data, so it's not just SQL queries anymore. It's now semi-structured and unstructured data. How do you start handling things when they don't come in nice tables that you can load into Excel or that you can put into SQL? We are also in a world where data is much larger. You mentioned telematics. If you took a reading from every car every second, that's a lot of numbers you've got to store, and that's a very different paradigm for computation. You have to think about storing this data. How do you deal with data now that it's stored across multiple computers? How do you think about computation in that context? Then, of course, the last thing is real-time data. Analytics has historically been -- you might call it -- a batch process. Run it once; generate a report; show it to people; you're done. Now it's a continuous process. You run it; you have to instantly find the latest trends; put that into production so you can intelligently adapt; and then do it again the next hour, the next minute. That's where competition is driving you. If you look at what Silicon Valley has been doing, it is very much your server is constantly learning from user behavior and adjusts how it interacts with users in a way that -- to borrow an expression -- delights the user. I think that we see that. Traditional companies, non-tech-based companies, have to emulate that kind of level of customer service and satisfaction. A lot of that comes down to big data and having a team capable of understanding new and different kinds of data in a world that's rapidly evolving.

New scams come out every month or even every week and you don’t want to risk falling for them and lose your money, car, or even get seriously injured. New scams are often advanced variations of some long-running criminal schemes, but they’re sometimes new and pretty ingenious. In any case, being aware of these popular tricks will allow you to protect yourself and your loved ones so that nobody falls victim to these criminals. A seemingly misplaced garment on your windshield is actually a new con being used by muggers and thieves. It works like this: if you see some random piece of clothing that prevents your wipers from moving or obscures your view, your first reaction will be to remove it, of course. But while you’re distracted untying it or trying to get it off, the criminal has plenty of time to jump you. The deceivers are sometimes women pretending to be pregnant. The thing is that even store security guards usually overlook women with big baby bumps, considering them no threat and innocent by default. Scammers take advantage of this and easily get away with committing petty crimes like pickpocketing or shoplifting. Something resembling a Roman numeral “two” on your door means that the homeowners are rich, so the place is a great target. On the other hand, a crossed circle tells other burglars that there's nothing valuable to take from the house. A long horizontal rectangle divided into 4 parts means the place has a big aggressive guard dog. Sometimes criminals can even pretend to be… your victim! To do this, they might throw themselves at your car as you back out of a parking spot or something of the like. Of course, they won’t be harmed since they’ve been extremely cautious about it. But they’ll put on a performance worthy of an Oscar, moaning and screaming in pain or swearing that you’ve broken their expensive cell phone or watch and whatnot. If you see a tracker on your car, be extremely cautious. If it's easy really noticeable, someone has probably thrown it out their car window and is waiting for you to pull over and get out to take it off. And it’s at this moment when the bad guy will try to attack and rob you. Or they might wait until you get home to figure out where you live. On the other hand, if you find such a device in a hidden place, like underneath your car, it's a real cause for concern because criminals are targeting you specifically. Norfolk Southern has rolled out its next-generation AccessNS, an e-commerce platform that gives customers an efficient and convenient one-stop digital shopping place to conduct business with the railroad. The revamped online portal features faster functionality and a modern, intuitive user interface that is easy to navigate, putting customers in the driver’s seat. By selecting digital “widgets,” customers can create personalized dashboards that give them quick access to information they consider most vital to their transportation logistics needs. “We have redesigned AccessNS from the ground up, giving it a totally new look,” said Fred Ehlers, vice president information technology and chief information officer. “Next-generation AccessNS is all about meeting the unique shipping needs of each customer. We want to provide our customers with timely and reliable data they need to satisfy the demands of their customers and grow their business. Our goal is to be the transportation industry leader in providing data the way customers want it.” With the overhaul, customers can use AccessNS to seamlessly: • Track shipments using interactive maps. • Obtain real-time data on rail car movements, including deliveries and pickups. • Request pricing, place shipping orders, and manage shipment exceptions. Norfolk Southern’s AccessNS redesign is based on extensive customer engagement over the past 18 months. The company plans to use ongoing customer feedback to continuously improve their AccessNS digital experience. Within the next several months, for example, Norfolk Southern plans to release an AccessNS mobile app for customers on the go. This effort is part of a broader company initiative to drive growth and supply-chain value through enhanced service offerings – including making life easier for customers. “With the improved AccessNS, we’re really focusing on the ease of doing business – the customer experience,” said Mike McClellan, vice president industrial products. “This is by no means the end of our digital customer journey. We want customers to tell us how we can make this application better. Customers want a low-touch, high-quality service experience, and that’s what we aim to deliver.”

South Africa can learn from the example of Zimbawe, of having changed the country's name from Rhodesia to Zimbabwe after independence, but did not destroy colonial statues and symbols. This according to University of South Africa Professor Lesiba Tefffo. We spoke to him earlier, in the wake of attacks and vandalism of colonial era statues across the country. We began by asking Professor Teffo the meaning of this backlash. Hamilton Morris travels to Swaziland hoping to chemically analyze the cannabinoids present in some of the local strains. Instead, he finds a country steeped in political corruption and economic turmoil. Cannabis is viewed by many growers, users, and politicians as a drug that will cause insanity, but it may be Swaziland's only hope for economic stability. What does AGRIBUSINESS mean? AGRIBUSINESS meaning - AGRIBUSINESS pronunciation - AGRIBUSINESS definition - AGRIBUSINESS explanation - How to pronounce AGRIBUSINESS? Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Agribusiness is the business of agricultural production. The term was coined in 1957 by Goldberg and Davis. It includes agrichemicals, breeding, crop production (farming and contract farming), distribution, farm machinery, processing, and seed supply, as well as marketing and retail sales. All agents of the food and fiber value chain and those institutions that influence it are part of the agribusiness system. Within the agriculture industry, "agribusiness" is used simply as a portmanteau of agriculture and business, referring to the range of activities and disciplines encompassed by modern food production. There are academic degrees in and departments of agribusiness, agribusiness trade associations, agribusiness publications, and so forth, worldwide. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) operates a section devoted to Agribusiness Development which seeks to promote food industry growth in developing nations. In the context of agribusiness management in academia, each individual element of agriculture production and distribution may be described as agribusinesses. However, the term "agribusiness" most often emphasizes the "interdependence" of these various sectors within the production chain. Among critics of large-scale, industrialized, vertically integrated food production, the term agribusiness is used negatively, synonymous with corporate farming. As such, it is often contrasted with smaller family-owned farms. Examples of agribusinesses include seed and agrichemical producers like Dow AgroSciences, DuPont, Monsanto, and Syngenta; AB Agri (part of Associated British Foods) animal feeds, biofuels, and micro-ingredients, ADM, grain transport and processing; John Deere, farm machinery producer; Ocean Spray, farmer's cooperative; and Purina Farms, agritourism farm. As concern over global warming intensifies, biofuels derived from crops are gaining increased public and scientific attention. This is driven by factors such as oil price spikes, the need for increased energy security, concern over greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, and support from government subsidies. In Europe and in the US, increased research and production of biofuels has been mandated by law.

Believe it or not, military mythology is a thing. Maybe when it comes to serving your nation, the soldiers never actually die. This is the story of Baba Harbhajan Singh, an Indian Army soldier, who died in 1967 but his ghost is believed to still be protecting his brothers-in-arms at the border. Born in a village of Punjab in 1941, Harbhajan Singh enrolled himself in the Indian Army in 1956. In 1965, he was granted a commission and was posted to serve with the14 Rajput Regiment. It was in the year 1967, near Nathu-La pass, that Singh met his end after slipping and drowning in a glacier while he was leading a column of mules carrying supplies to a lonesome outpost. His body was recovered after three days and cremated with due honors. But did he really die? Legend has it that it was his own ghost that led the search party to his own dead body. Soon after cremation, it is believed, he appeared in one of his friends dream and asked him to erect a shrine in his memory. Following this, a shrine dedicated to Singh was built. Even today, jawans posted at the Nathu-La post firmly believe that Singh’s ghost protects them. Soldiers even believe that his ghost warns them of any impending attack at least three days in advance. Even the Chinese, during flag meets, set a chair aside to honour Harbhajan Singh. The water from his shrine is believed to heal ailing soldiers. Singh’s shrine is guarded by barefooted soldiers, and his uniform and boots are cleaned on a daily basis. Stories about his ghost visiting the camps at night and even waking up the soldiers who sleep while on watch, are massively popular and very regular. The belief about his paranormal existence is so firm that every year on 11th September, a train carrying ‘his’ belongings departs for his hometown accompanied by fellow soldiers, and goes right till his home’s doorstep. Moreover, until his recent retirement, Singh was steadily promoted up the ranks and retired as an Honorary Captain. His salary has, without fail, been sent to his family up until his retirement. Singh is looked up to as a holy saint today and soldiers often refer to him as ‘Baba’. Guess patriotism never really dies! Archaeologist David Rohl claims to have found the site described in Genesis as "Eden" in a lush valley beneath an extinct volcano in northern Iran. The Jerusalem Report (February 1, 1999) broke the story in the article -- "Paradise Found." Ten miles from the sprawling Iranian industrial city of Tabriz, to the northwest of Teheran, says British archaeologist David Rohl, he has found the site of the Biblical garden . . . "As you descend a narrow mountain path, you see a beautiful alpine valley, just like the Bible describes it, with terraced orchards on its slopes, crowded with every kind of fruit-laden tree," says Rohl, a scholar of University College, London, The Biblical word gan (as in Gan Eden) means `walled garden,' " Rohl continues, "and the valley is indeed walled in by towering mountains." The highest of these is Mt. Sahand, a snow-capped extinct volcano that Rohl identifies as the Prophet Ezekiel's Mountain of God, where the Lord resides among `red-hot coals' (Ezekiel 28:11-19). Cascading down the once-fiery mountain, precisely echoing Ezekiel, is a small river, the Adji Chay (the name of which also translates in local dialect as 'walled garden'). The locals still hold the mountain sacred, Rohl says, and attribute magical powers to the river's water. In order to make the journey to this most remote location, one must travel from western Iran, north through the Zagros Mountains of Iranian Kurdistan, down Mt. Sahand, and into the fertile Adji Chay valley. The Jerusalem Report article gives a number of geographical locations. What made Rohl look in this location in the first place? One factor was that he read about it in ancient Sumerian cuneiform clay tablets held by the Museum of the Orient in Istanbul. The other factor was the work of the late, little-known British scholar Reginald Walker. The ancient tablets described a 5,000 year-old route to Eden. He has been researching the location since the late 1980's through academic documents. In April 1997 Rohl did something very remarkable to prove his point. He set out from the Iranian town of Ahwaz, near the northern tip of the Persian Gulf, with only his jeep driver for company. According to the article: They traveled north toward Kurdistan through what Rohl calls `lawless' terrain, trusting to luck to avoid the various guerilla factions active in the region. Rohl followed a route, documented in the Sumerian cuneiform epic `Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta,' supposedly taken 5,000 years earlier by an emissary of the Sumerian priest-king of Uruk. The emissary had been dispatched to Aratta, on the plain of `Edin' -- known to Sumerians as a land of happiness and plenty -- to obtain gold and lapis lazuli to decorate a temple that Enmerkar was building in Uruk. The cuneiform epic describes the dutiful emissary's three-month trek on foot via seven passes through the Zagros Mountains, to the foothills of Mt. Sahand -- the southern edge of Rohl's Eden -- and his successful procurement of the required valuable. The Garden described in the Bible places the headwaters of four rivers in it: the Tigris, the Euphrates, the Gihon, and the Pishon. Obviously, the Tigris and Euphrates are well-known rivers, but the other two have been real problems in the past. Rohl has identified them as the Araxes and Uizhun which puts the headwaters of all four rivers in his Eden. Interestingly, the Uizhun, Rohl's equivalent to the Pishon which the Bibles identifies with gold, is known locally as the Golden River, and meanders between ancient gold mines and lodes of lapis lazuli. Making his case even stronger, Rohl says that he has found the "Land of Nod" which the Bible describes as "East of Eden." Nod was Cain's place of exile after the murder of his brother Abel. Today the area is called "Noqdi." But it doesn't end there because a few kilometers south of Rohl's Nod, at the head of a mountain pass, lies the sleepy town of Helabad. Formerly it was known as "Kheruabad," which means "settlement of the Kheru people." He believes that this could be a permutation of the Hebrew word keruvim that is translated as "Cherubs." These people were a tribe of fearsome warriors whose token was an eagle or falcon. Modern scholars have argued that the Genesis stories were just myths and should be looked upon in an allegorical sense. Rohl's discovery is now essentially seeking to push back the start of history all the way to the beginning of the Book of Genesis. Since the Bible scrupulously documents the specifics of the garden's location and its surroundings, says Rohl, why shouldn't we take those descriptions at face value? "I consider the Bible a historical document just like the writings of Herodotus or a text of Rameses II," says Rohl. "It's ridiculous to throw it in the dustbin just because it's a religious text. If so strong a tradition evolves out of the past, it is likely to have a genuine geographical setting."

financial modeling 101, financial modeling basics, and best practices. what is financial modeling? planning for the future of your small business is an important part of success. financial modeling takes different shapes, but basically, it’s about plugging different numbers and scenarios into a formula very often on an excel sheet and seeing the effect they have. a well-built financial model will help a business owner understand the costs and profits from their management decisions. what will it cost to open a new location, hire a new employee, and how does that impact the bottom line? these can even tell businesses they have enough customer service people to take on the number of customers they want to next year. that’s why using financial statements and market research will give you more accurate results. it’s even a good idea to consider a professional consultant to get an objective base to start from. you can get a bunch of different scenarios by changing the variables which can be factors like the size of your target market, price per unit (which can even include extra selling costs like transportation) and estimated profit. one of the best things about financial modeling is it’s always a work in progress. as time goes by and your small business conditions change, you’ll always have the ability to plug in new numbers to see what comes out. as you might imagine, there are a variety of financial models to choose from. however, there are a few that are considered standards: three-statement model. this is one of the more basic ones that covers incomes statements, cash flow, and balance sheets. discounted cash flow model. don’t let the name scare you off. this model builds on the previous one to value a company. budget models. as the name implies, this is the model that’s used to put a budget together. other models that small business should find helpful include a forecasting model and option pricing model that basically makes use of the calculator built into excel.
Russia has successfully reinvigorated the high value commodity industries (oil, gas and mining) since 1990 to become a leading world exporter and intends to develop the timber sector. EastWest Timber was established to create a vertically integrated timber products company with control over all stages of the timber pipeline. We harvest the forest resource, contract first-cut timber processing in Russia and manufacture timber components in Estonia and deliver to customer specifications to EU and the Far East.

In this series, I want to continue my education by digging deeper into the lives and careers of my guests to try and learn how they think. I want to understand the experiences that have shaped them, the failures they bounced back from, and the lessons that those failures have taught them. And I want to break down their success to find out what sets them apart. I'm not looking for trade ideas or guesses about an unknowable future, but rather knowledge, accumulated over the course of careers to try and make me a better investor. And I want to share those conversations with you. Several years ago, I was introduced to my guest today by mutual friends who'd entrusted a significant portion of their savings to. This man, they told me, invest in a way which is not only unlike the methods employed by 99% of money managers today, but also with an integrity and a methodology which is a throwback to a time which is sadly almost vanished. In the intervening period, as I've gotten to know my guest better, I spent a considerable amount of time trying to persuade him to sit down with me and share both his experience and his investment philosophy with the Real Vision audience. Sadly, each of my invitations has been met with a very polite, but very firm, no thank you. This was no surprise to me. My guest has never before been interviewed, either in writing or on camera, and for good reason. He's a private man who prefers to spend his time reading and thinking, who invests far from the spotlight, and with no care for either mainstream opinion or consensus strategies. A year ago, I finally got to meet my guest, and I spent an evening I will never forget listening to him talk about how he sees the world and how he thinks about the discipline of investing. That meeting made me more determined than ever to try and persuade him to break his silence and give others the chance to learn from him as I had done. Now, three years after I first approached him, he's very graciously agreed to talk to me in front of the Real Vision cameras. And so I'm excited to be traveling to the Swiss Alps to discover how his framework has evolved over the years and see how he looks at the process of investing that which he considers permanent, irreplaceable capital. So please join me for a conversation with Tony Deden. There are going to people that watch this who know you, and they're probably sitting there thinking, why the hell is Tony Deden doing it? And then they're going to people that don't know who, after this conversation, are going to go, why the hell do I not know Tony Deden? So I know this is the first time you've done one of these and I really appreciate the fact that you've agreed to do it, because there's so many things I want to talk to you about.

For most people, railroads in Alaska and the Yukon are synonymous with the Alaska Railroad and the White Pass and Yukon Railroad whose passenger cars provide tourists with vistas of awe-inspiring terrain. That same terrain provided enormous challenges for early settlers of both territories. Railroads were an integral part of overcoming those challenges. Dozens of other railroads also laid track in Alaska, the Yukon, and northwest British Columbia and provided the means to transport supplies to settlements and to transport the region’s raw materials to outside markets. Klondike Alaska charts the history of many of those railroads. ©KUAC 2005 DVD's of this program are available for purchase at www.kuac.org.
